Grumman Iron Works. Widcat to Tomcat. As a retired Navy Aviation mechanic I will miss them all. To my friends in VF-31 who serviced and flew the last combat missions in the F-14..... Think about you always.
@drod103164 No. They served in between WWII and Korea with the U.S. Navy. The French were the only ones to use them in combat in French Indochina and Algeria.
The Hellcat is powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp 2000 HP engines. the whistle you hear when it's flying by is the sound of the intake below the engine, on the chin of the aircraft. It had a 16-1 kill ratio(or a 19-2) and was nicknamed the Zero Killer. It was armed with six 0.50 cal M2 Browning machine guns on most 5's and all 3's. correct me if I am wrong.
@PSNgregiskool In fact the -5 could carry a mixed armament of x4 .50 cal machine guns and x2 M3 20mm cannons.. Nightfighters carried this armament in combat, their dayfighting counterparts could yet never did.
F6F and F8F Grumman Cats with 2000 horsepower pratt & whitney engines. Both can fly close to 400 mph. Both the Hellcat and Bearcat were faster than the F4F Wildcat.
F4U-7? Isn't F4 a Wildcat? They didn't still fly those in '53, did they? I think that the Hellcat is a better looking plane than the Bearcat, in most way. But I like 'em both. Go Ironworks! Did they call Grumman the "Ironworks" in WWII, or was that later on?
F4U-7 (Corsair)was built for french navy, nothing to do with F4F Wildcat! F8F Bearcats were flown 1954 or so by french air force. F6F Hellcat was with french navy together with Corsairs (F4U-7 and AU-1 ). AU-1 was meant for lowlevel attack, armour instead of supercharger.
@numatubeable did you fly the cosair? Our air force (RNZAF) used them in the pacific from 1943, beautiful aircraft. Did you ever get to fly the hellcat and how much different in flying characteristics are they?
@KilleTheHedgehog8492 well actually i never said the hellcat was based on the p51 i just said that it was the pacific war equivilent and besides that the Hellcat was designed around the P47 engine and was made of the specs of a captured Zero. PS: please learn a bit of history before you spit shit out that not true u cumdumpster.
