We belong to the jazzguild of fairfield county, WINTER lives right around the corner from us, it would mean alot to young musicians if he would pay us a visit!!
I just went and added the Marcus Miller Signature Series Fender Jazz to the Fender Precision I have been using. Running it through an Acoustic B600H head with a B410 and B115 cabinet. Monster sound on both. Well worth every penny and this was early Christmas present to me.
Daaaaayum! I liked when Edgar Winters played this waaay back in the day but this cover just tears it up!!!! this is how funky it can be! love the whole band (I've only recently stumbled upon him on YT and I'm blown away w/each new vid I find!!) ty for the post even tho it was quite a while ago I'm glad I've gotten to see it! Much Love :D
Poogie Bell looks like he is having a great time behind the kit! Yeah! this song is AWESOME! Again Marcus. I wonder if he is really from here? AWESOME! What an inspiration not only the bass? but as a Musician!
allan holdsworth cited dean as one of his favorite guitarists in an interview a long time ago. i think his moves are classic - musicians are allowed to be humorous! sometimes 'self-serious' musicians make for a slightly boring show. miller is just sick, of course, the essence of funky bass
I have watched this video maybe 50 times and i NEVER get tired of it, MY GOD what a beast on BASS, man oooooh man can MARCUS play, sheesh scary to think that many of us will never be this good, but love it anyway, every time we think we are getting good we can watch this and it will bring us back down to earth.
If you have ever tried to explain the concept of "funky" to someone, show them this video along with some Verdine White, Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins and Sean Michael Ray. IF they don't get it then, they never will.
tensions flared over plans to build a mosque near ground zero as rival demonstration took place after family members of the victims of the sept 11,2001 attacks recited loved ones' names at a sombre ceremony marking the ninth anniversary of that day
Marcus Miller is one of the best bass players alive! I liked this song when Edgar did it a million years ago, but IMHO, Marcus and that bad-ass band took a masterpiece and made it a whole lot better!
dean brown is actually one of the best guitarrists I've ever heard. not only that he can play fast as hell if he wants... (yeah i've heard that in an instructional video of him, but he said it was quite boring for him xD ) he is also the master of under statement.
my band plays this, and whenever someone says, "oh, frankenstein by edgar winter?" we say "no, frankenstein by marcus miller..." because even if winter wrote it, miller's version is so much better.
maybe the questions about marcus bass playing can be explained quite simply by understanding the dude is a genius on the bass, and obviously music talent around him pushes it to stratespheric levels. huhhhh
Usually, this kind of music gets inspiration from jazz and not from rock - this is why it's a pretty good trompet solo solo. Instead of marcus' - that was just way too long.
I listened to this a couple of times, and here's some thoughts for u - dont hate on me.
Marcus Miller - that was a really empty solo. Just because he's slapping instead of playing "normally", doesn't mean he has to repeat everything he already played, especially when the licks are so uninteresting. Nice detail with the e-string "bends", shame it got so much out of tune afterwards. Btw, the guitarist sounds being out of tune around 3:05 aswell, or is it just me?
I dun hate you :D I just wanna say : He would repeat everything anyway its just his style. Bass players can't do the same solos as guitarists because they hold the band together. I take it you know something about jazz so I won't do simple shit :D, you get the idea. Plus its more for the musicians listening on how hard it is to come up with it (improv) and restrain from going ape shit :P aka go crazy
dude, there's nothing for a bassist to hold together during a SOLO. oh, and i actually play bass myself, i know about improv lel - and when using the scale that Marcus uses in this solo, he hears everything beforehand - i'm not quite sure i understand what you're saying tho, i'm sorry :p
I agree - both players are big idols of mine, but sometimes the guys that do tons of double-thumbing have way too tinny of a sound (so that every percussive/lightly touched note is audible). MM never seems to sacrifice his tone for a flashy technique.
i love marcus miller but what the fuck is he doing playing this on the bass. the whole reason the song is good is because of the ridiculous sounding ARP, not that house nigger playing stupid sounding solos or his gay brass section fagging up what was a good tune.
If you have such a low opinion of what is a perfectly respectable (and, frankly awesome) take on a classic tune, your rendition of this song must be amazing. I just saw your channel page, and man are you a fucking incredible musician!
you shouldn't reply to that kind of person... he probably likes marcus, but he sits alone at home, has no friends, is bored and then he writes shit about great artists and when you people reply, he is quite pleases, because this it the only way to get attention.
so next time we just spam his comment, and leave it.
btw: marcus is a funky wizzard, and crapht sucks xD
true, but for people who don't play for such a long time or rarely play stuff like this, tabs can be very helpfull to see what the musicians like to play; helps figuring it out later.
I'm not saying one should just play tabs (trust me D3m learning it yourself is hard and takes a while at first but really pays of :P) so ... yeah ;)
Marcus' groove is as good as it gets period, no excess, just the goods. There's is more substance in his playing than all the self-loving, self worshiping bass bafoons on Youtube put together. It's all about taste, why can't all bass players realize that.
