It has a virtual variac in it. You can lower the plate voltage on the tubes which causes the amp to distort earlier. I guess you could view it as increased gain. It works with a 3 way standby switch. One way is standard voltage the other is a lowered voltage. From what I've heard, EVH used a Variac to lower the plate voltage on his amp.
