The Allman brothers are from the South. Georgia, etc. and this IS southern rock. They came straight out of listening and learning from the old black bluesmen of the SOUTH.

Actually this was directly derived from an old shaman spirit just west of Crackleberry Crick. It was literally extracted from the rare rock in the water there. Thats why its called southern rock--its actually a mineral.

One person down below got it right- this version is NOT by The Allman Brothers Band, it is by Gregg Allman, appearing on his 1973 solo LP, Laid Back. The Allman Brothers Band had previously released it, but it was a band arrangement and not that of Gregg. This arrangement is closer to what he was hearing when he wrote the song. The Laid Back album allowed him to play it the way he wanted to play it. A similar version is also on his 1974 double live album.

I totally agree. I grew up with brothers that listened to rap, r&b and grunge, this song is better than all the stuff they listened to. I heard it (or at least a version of it) for the first time on Rob Zombie's movie House of 1000 Corpses. I'm glad he put it in there or I wouldn't have known it existed.
