The only way this can possibly get more awesome would be to have the Shuttle test orbiter Enterprise waiting for Discovery when she comes home...hey, a guy can dream, eh? ;)
I think this was great, but I'm saddened beyond measure that this is the end of manned missions from NASA. I hope that we won't be planet-bound forever, but the attitudes I see from so many is that all this is a waste of time. To me, it feels like our wings have been clipped.
As much as I like NASA and a hardcore Star Trek fan, I think it would be better if Picard were to made that tribute instead of Kirk. But still it was moving :')
If anyone has the Yotube-URL of the inauguration of the space schuttle "Enterprise" for me, then please send it to me as a private message. There was the complete old Enterprise-Crew invited at that day and a special orchestra played the Star Trek-melody during the inauguration.
@Astrobrant2 William Shakespeare did it too ("Root pity in thy heart, that when it grows - Thy pity may deserve to PITIED be"). Let's pretend "Kirk" uses the colloquial variation "To BOLDLY go" to fire up Discovery's heroic crew, Nicole Stott, Michael Barratt, Alvin Drew, Steve Bowen, pilot Eric Boe, and commander Steve Lindsey. May they come home safely. Your post made me laugh;-)
@howedesign Having paid attention to the language and even having taught it, I have come to the conclusion that the rule regarding splitting infinitives is archaic and useless and should be abandoned. It should also be okay to begin a sentence with "and" and "but," and we shouldn't have to worry about ending a sentence with a preposition, (unless it is superfluous.)
We were there at your last lift off and I was saddened to see it as your last, I can only pray that our space programs continue. I will be there as the last 2 launch and so will my children, space is education and education is priceless.
This may sound mean, but I wonder when they'll shoot Shatner into outer space ;) He's already a seasoned space traveler, and he'll be able to push buttons, update the star log, and have fist fights with any hostile aliens we might meet up there.
@MyGrassIsGreenest Yep, and not just war but on government subsidies that stifle innovation, programs based upon knee-jerk reactions or political calculations, government funding of religiously motivated organizations, and a citizenry that would rather complain about pointless garbage on social network sites rather than earn science and technology degrees that will push humanity's progress further. But it's not too late for people to be part of the solution.
That must have been an amazing gift from William Shatner. ^_^
It is my sincerest wish that we never allow the accomplishments of the space shuttle program to become tarnished. We must honor this spirit of pioneering and exploration that will continue to propel us into a bright future. From me-- thank you Discovery for 30 years of unbelievable achievements.

Too bad our space program is slipping into stagnation and people would rather spend money on war than exploring the cosmos.
