Wow hydraylic tip. With oil or water. Many places was used water hydraylic. Like excavators. Problem was cooking. Water was coming steam, in hard work. In tip hydraylic it would work good.
Most of the bed lifts I remember in the 30s had a crank handle steel cable, you would turn the handle to raise the bed. I do remember a few hydraulic lifts on the 30s. There were a few dump trucks that a PTO operated bed lift.
Gar Wood was born on 4 December, 1880 in Mapleton, Iowa to a family of 13 children. Gar worked on boats from an early age. In 1911 at 31, he invented a hydraulic lift for unloading coal from rail trucks. He established the Wood Hoist Co. in Detroit and soon became a successful businessman. Later he changed the company name to Garwood Industries, which built racing boats, but also capitalized on experience with coal unloaders to successfully produce and market GarWood truck bodies.
Not a hydraulic... I'm not sure they had that till the 30's. Most likely an electric motor with a worm gear. I wouldn't know. But this is so so cool and if I had the money and a place to keep it, I'd buy it right now as is.
@Cletrac Really?! That is so so so cool! I want one now! :-P How common are these? I've never seen anything like it so I assume this is an extremely rare piece.
i think so, i could be wrong, my great grandfather used to have a 1927 dumptruck, and it has the hydraulic dump bed lift on it, it was never sat out in any weather and only has 2100 miles on it, always garaged, after he passes away at 92, we sold it at an auction 20 years ago, for $13,000, we was going to keep it, but didnt have a garage to put it in, we sold the land too if you asked about his land, but i am pretty sure they had hydraulics in 1927, like i said i could be wrong

I love seeing these old trucks when they're not restored. They're only original once.

@WillWriteYourSongs The lift is hydraulic and it is original to the truck. Hydraulic systems were not common back then, but they did exist.

I wonder if the hydraulic lift was added later. Did not think they had them back that far, could be wrong.
