This is a movie version of a memoir. Of course what actually happened is over-romantized! Even in writing, everything sounds so elegant. The point is Elizabeth Gilbert wanted to stop living life for others and find herself and don't we all kind of want that? I hardly believe all these ppl who disliked it are saintly good people who do nothing but think of others. No one is that good, so get over it. You don't have to like this story but, don't act like you are better than her or anybody else.

For me it was a very sad movie that exposed a very problematic feature of our modern society: the obsessive occupation with 'personal happiness'. Not only that chasing it with such a compulsiveness becomes legitimate even when the price is hurting loved ones but it endorses the illusion that you can only find it 'somewhere else' (other place, other religion, other person). Selfishness is no longer bad nor is responsibility. This is our future. We'll gonna reap just what we sow.

Just came back from the watching it on kookíca!!! It's awesome! I couldn't really understand the begginning though. My mom said the whole movie except for the ending was good for her... But actualy I liked the whole movie...
I think that probably what is the most moving though is that this film that I saw on kookíca is able to take hold of you and when you're let go in the end; the only thing you can think of is that you are just glad to seeing it.
I found it disappointingly boring and just another story of a woman in a middle age crisis told in a very similar way with mmmm… “Under the Tuscan sun” with Diane Lane. The latter by the way is a much better movie. Julia Roberts is also not at her best. So, don’t waste your time, folks. Some movies are better after second watch but... does one feel like watching it again?...

I saw the film last night on kòòkica, and it was fantastic. I echo what he says...this movie is about so much more than just movie. And to address all the comments about cinemetography: director does an excellent job shooting this film.
The characters are well fleshed out in this movie and the script is everything you could ever wish it were. I don't remember the last time I had so much fun watching the movie. From this director comes another awesome movie soon... I am waiting for this on kòòkica!

This is a movie version of a memoir. Of course what actually happened is over-romantized! Even in writing, everything sounds so elegant. The point is Elizabeth Gilbert wanted to stop living life for others and find herself and don't we all kind of want that? I hardly believe all these ppl who disliked it are saintly good people who do nothing but think of others. No one is that good, so get over it. You don't have to like this story but, don't act like you are better than her or anybody else.

For me it was a very sad movie that exposed a very problematic feature of our modern society: the obsessive occupation with 'personal happiness'. Not only that chasing it with such a compulsiveness becomes legitimate even when the price is hurting loved ones but it endorses the illusion that you can only find it 'somewhere else' (other place, other religion, other person). Selfishness is no longer bad nor is responsibility. This is our future. We'll gonna reap just what we sow.

@ksebail wow, i hated this movie for that exact reason you mentioned. a story unfolding around the protagonist coming to grips with being a pseudo deep self centered bitch, and becoming an iconic figure to women all over the globe. but yeah, i didn't even stop to think about it in the sense of art reflecting culture. very very insightful comment. a lot of times when people make statements about our times being so much worse than they used to be, i disagree, but in this case i couldn't agree more

although the movie was done well, if you examine the bare facts of the story, then you have to emit the protagonist is still just a pseudo deep self centered bitch. and from what i hear about julia roberts, playing this role was NOT a stretch at all, and its just another testimony to her narcissism to be pushing 50 and playing a 32yo. but you know what WAS a stretch in this movie? julia's skin around that awkward skull of hers.. like someone put a condom over the head of a duck billed platypus.

I found it disappointingly boring and just another story of a woman in a middle age crisis told in a very similar way with mmmm… “Under the Tuscan sun” with Diane Lane. The latter by the way is a much better movie. Julia Roberts is also not at her best. So, don’t waste your time, folks. Some movies are better after second watch but... does one feel like watching it again?...
