I'm a long time Garmin/TomTom user and every gps company is the same. I agree with you about 1 map update costing sometimes more than the unit itself especially when there are 4 updates a year. If you don't like it ditch that POS Magellan and pick up a new TomTom or garmin with lifetime maps included for $130 and you dont have to worry or bitch about it anymore. You don't know how important it is to have an up to date map till you need it and end up in the boonies.

ArchFiend, that royally sucks, and I feel your pain. I had a Magellan that I needed to upgrade and when I saw the price I was like "Fuck that!" I wound up buying a TomTom at my local Navy Exchange for $150 and it rocks!

The best part about the TomTom is that you can receive updates from other users without having to pay jack... but they at least give you the option to buy through the company or not.

If you update it within a certain time frame, then the updates are free. It's usually free to update it in the first year of owning it. I've had this one for 14 months now.

Updates should be free, unless it's pc program that has completely new version (for example adobe cs3 to cs4, or win xp to vista). That's ridiculous, that's why there's piracy, because of these greedy corporations that will charge you for anything. You could get new device for 80 bucks, and there's always risk that you may brick/mess up that device by that update. Just thank you Arch for bringing this out.

Digital media takes just as long if not longer then other mediums to create. Not everybody downloads software because they know it's stealing and that it's wrong. I think Tom Tom is free. Not Sure about that. I just use my cell phone from Verizon and it cost $2.99 for 24 hours or $9.99 per month. i just use the $2.99 when I go on a trip. That updates it self evertime i use it.
