I love Knopfler, but - "the stadium system in America"? What about the festivals in Europe - vastly larger audiences and a huge part of music life in the UK especially.
No wonder David left the band!!! Mark wanted for nothing and David wanted the world!! Soon as David left, Dire Straits went on to have the world anyway and that would have pissed David off to no end, considering Mark wanted to keep it small!! I believe they still dont talk till this day. You can see quite clearly when Mark starts talking about how he dosent want to be big in America David is squirming in his seat. They would have had to have an argument after that interview no doubt!!!!!!
@narnyslip actually no. david left the band for more personal reasons and internal affairs in the band, and even tho he left,n mark later played gigs with him and collaborated on a few albums. they still talk
jaa das war bevor sultans of swing rauskam. da dauerte es nicht mehr lange da waren sie in den riesen stadien mit 60000 fans :) interessante wendung finde ich :)
I think Knopfler's right, the more people you add the more distant the experience can become. There may be exceptions, but a small gig is a very different experience.
the presenter Alan BANGs is cute , he doesN't have a (strong) German accent when he speaks English, like Scandinavian ppl but UNlike EASTern EUROpean ppl
Oh yea, they were filling stadiums and arenas throughout the 80's. Knopfler hated it and tells the story of walking around backstage at a stadium gig and not knowing any of the truckers/crew/caterers etc. It was then he decided things had 'got too big' and he disolved the band.
Things do change dont they? weather we like it or not!!!!!!! you could hear Marks brother was all for the famous thing. But obviously Mark and the rest of the band had other ideas, thats why Marks brother left the band not long after this??
Yeah... things chanded since this interview... but Mark always claimed that he stopped Dire Straits because of being fed up of this gigantism... that's consistant with what he always thought and he's back, now, to his beloved intimistic small concerts...
Great one, there was another great from 1980 up here, it has been removed but it was a backstage interview for some american show where the journalist prenouned the band name "Dire Street" that one was bloody brilliant!
Well I just think that Mark is hot.

Notez le geste tendre de David qui le recoiffe.Le regard désaprobateur des autres à ce qu'il dit. Rare!!!!

sounds like mark has the same views as Roger Waters from Pink Floyd

So Waters would REALLY get along with Knopfler.

More than 162.000 people attended the concerts, with an estimated 1.5 billion viewers tuning in to television broadcasts. ...
We were almost 80.000 people at the Wembley!
