This is without a doubt one of the most touching game show finales I've ever witnessed. The part where Richard mentions "people of all races, creeds & colors" was emotionally heartfelt. To hear Richard mention "World War II" when he left his native England was equally touching. Was that his wife Cathy he was hugging @ the end, & was that Gene Wood who handed Richard tissues @ the end as well? I doubt Howard Felsher would do that, as he was happy to see Richard leave, which was sad.
this show went right down the drain when Dawson left.....they've had a string of talentless putzes since then.....or at least, relatively speaking.....
Bob Barker often told the audience (in his last 5-6 years on Price) he would "call security" when they got too loud. I swear Barker said on air a few times he had to have audience members booted from the studio.
@dft432 That's quite a shame about that because TPIR is known for encouraging a boisterous party atmosphere among the contestants in the audience. Would have made sense if they were rowdy.
@wwefox13 Well Family Feud has changed sets over the years, I guess it's to fit the hosts personality, I mean, I can't picture Richard Dawson on Ray Combs' Set or Combs being on Dawson's Set, personally, as much as people like Combs' Set, I like Dawson's Original Set and I like Karn's Sets, both the 1st and the 2nd Set
I also prefer Richard Dawson & Richard Karn over Combs and Louie Anderson, John O'Hurley was pretty good, but I can't judge Steve Harvey just yet, I'll give him time before I do
I remember when I saw this originally in 1985, I cried. & when they show this on GSN from time to time i cry every time. BUT in 2006, TIME WARNER dropped GSN. TWC is an evil corporation!!
@JassieXD Richard left because the show was doing poor in ratings and was cancelled right after this segment. Creator Mark Goodson never wanted Richard to host again because of his behavior off stage, by the time he went back to host again because of poor ratings, Goodson had passed on, so he was easily given the job
The bonus footage explains why Richard named his daughter, Shannon Nicole Dawson. It was to continually remember the girl that meant the world to him.
Makes me cry i loved him he was the best host ever. Has he been on GSN at all in the past years???? Bye Bye Richard. You were my favorite host! I liked the alligator thing!!!!
And with the trend of classic game shows slowly disappearing from GSN, I have a feeling that this version of Family Feud will be gone by the time 2013 comes around. And as I post this (on September 21, 2010), Dawson's Feud will be entering 1981 very soon.
The lady at the end that is embracing Richard is his ex-daughter in law Cathy Hugart-Dawson, who was one of the producers of the show, at the time married to his son Gary.
What a great way to go out. Richard Dawson is and will always be a class act in whatever he does. I can't help but tear up every time I watch Richard's final speech, especially about the part of his mentioning D-Day & World War II in England. When I heard the part about Richard mentioning his mother giving him a lecture about "God creating people people of all creeds", I chocked up & just about cried! Richard, if you ever read this, there will be a place reserved for you in Heaven for sure!
There you have it. The end of an era on ABC - the last time viewers would see Richard Dawson's practice of kissing which could be seen as sexual harassment to some of today's viewers. I'm glad that when he returned in 1994, he came clean.
Definitely goes down in my books as the biggest game show finale in history. I was so touched, I didn't even feel like watching Combs' Feud (which aired right after this finale) when this finale last aired in the normal rotation on June 5, 2003.
@JonSea31 Well said on the subject considering that most (not an exxaggeration ) todays viewers (from the 90s on) are pretty much hypocritical as they with open arms accept the loosening of standards and morals everywhere else in the media. from the explosions of sex of all kinds, toilet humor and the tiresome PC idiocy. Dawson had no choice, this was the PC Clinton era, and besides he would've stopped doing it anyway as as he started a second family.....
@JonSea31 actually thankfully we as a society have somewhat grown up from the PC paranoia of the Clinton years. and that today his kissing goes over the heads of GSN viewers. (GSN even made a commercial with him kissing the female comntestants in 2000) I was afraid that if it got any worse GSN/Fremantle would have to edit the kissing (just like they edit fee plugs), (hahahaha)
@JonSea31 I hates to say this, but I think that you think that is sexual harassment, then you are either insane or delusional, b/c the fact that it was not a big secret that Richard kissed the female contestants (everyone trying out for the show knew this beforehand). All women also had to fill out a questionnaire saying is it alright if Richard greeted you with a kiss. So if they had a problem with it they just should have said so, and if you want Sexual Harassment, look up Bob Barker Lawsuits
I really, really wonder why Mark Goodson had it out for Richard Dawson so badly. As everyone eluded to here, he developed a large ego and could often be difficult to work with, but I don't think the emotions he showed here were alligator tears or a pitch to get the audience on his side. And Richard wasn't the only host to have disagreements with the staff; look at all that's transpired with Bob Barker, and he managed to stay on TPIR for 35 seasons.
What a special show the original Feud was. And thats the legacy that it leaves and why its unarguably one of the most successful franchises in TV history. The fact that this finale aired in 85 (25 years ago) and it still lives on, on GSN and YouTube in this age. The fact that a currently popular show can spoof something 25 or 30 years old and we all laught over it. It really speaks volumes of just how beloved the Feud is. The Feud proves even in the TV industry: you cant fix whats not broken.
I am a big Dawson fan. Supposedly, he wanted the part where he acknowledged Flesher taken out of the speech before it aired.
Clearly, Dawson had a big ego but most Hollywood people do. There's a certain arrogance required to think that you should be on television so millions of people can see you (and would want to see you). It goes with the territory.
This is by far one of the greatest TV farewell speeches ever!! I am an avid Dawson fan. And for all of those who speak of Dawson's ego...the producer (Howard Felsher) had a problem with Dawson, then the producer had a problem with Ray Combs...maybe the producer, Felsher, is the one with the problem...
@ajkells22 Didn't Dawson develop said ego while still on Match Game? As for Ray, I thought he had gone bankrupt, and that's what took a toll on him during his tenure.
Look at Family Feud - The E! True Hollywood Story (part 3) on YouTube at 9:09 to 9:30 and you will see what Howard Felsher said about Richard Dawson's farewell speech.
Actually, his account got suspended. because of said special. Quite stupid I know of Youtube and their gatling gun of corporate obedience, as Bogart put it.
Not to mention, the set and the gameplay was the beginning of the end of family feud and perhaps the start of the downfall of All American Television which has now turn into fremantle which was previously pearson television.
@timhomer2009 You sure Ray Combs walked off the set on the final episode of Family Feud Challenge? I know he walked off the set on his syndicated Feud, and that was in May 1994.
We've heard things about how Richard had a big ego, but this last send-off demonstrates, without a shadow of doubt, that he also had a big heart.
The last part--the studio master that was unaired--almost makes me cry every time I watch it. So I'm now starting to give "lollipop bouquets"--five lollipops with black stems--as get well tokens.
Thank you Richard, and Nicole, wherever you are, we hope you are at peace.
This speech and the last episode made me cry a lot,but when he returned in 1994,it made me cry a lot harder, but with happy tears. Dawson has been the best host of Family Feud, and no one can outdo him,and no one can replace his legacy on the show.
Wow. I don't think I should bother to try and put into words how this affected me. Just wanted to say THANK YOU so very much for putting this up - truly - as Richard would say. :) And yes, that Rainbow comment, everything, just...wow. I wish he would have been able to talk longer.
Any video quality and other game show host dislike comments aside, he really is one of a kind in the best of ways. I don't get why GSN doesn't show this more often. It was beautiful to see/hear the program master.
one reason some parts are edited out in reruns is for instance, Contestant plugs it wouldn't make to have a contestant plug for a show that's not even in production
This is great, and Bob Barker's was great too. It wasn't long, it was indeed short, but it was Bob. And this was the second best game show host of all time Richard Dawson!!
I sure wouldn't say that Bob Barker was the BEST game show host of all time - hell no! Just ask everyone that was victimized by him and his staff since 1986... Also, the last "TPIR" was all about Bob, and nothing more. No models, no announcers, no staff, not even Mark Goodson was mentioned! One hellva guy (NOT!)
Are you joking, please tell me you aren't that cynical. First of all, on the last TPIR that Bob Barker hosted, he only talked of his departure at the very end. So I don't know how that's all about Bob. Second, Mark Goodson's name is mentioned at the end of every show, and still is today. Last but not least, the announcer was newer, the models came and went, the staff came and went, BOB DID NOT. But is it wrong to give 1 minute of spotlight to a man who was a host for 50 YEARS. Go watch it.
If you don't like him, fine, just say that. If it's not your opinion, which you ARE entitled to, that he is the BEST of all time, firstly you won't find many who will agree with you. Secondly, people went to see that show because of Bob, and I've been to a taping and was honored to be a contestant, he spent every minute of the hour with the audience. The audiences LOVED him. But surely he is ONE of the BEST to you? If not, then just admit you don't like him and don't reprimand me for liking him.
If you read about Barker's tiff with Betty White about Billy The Elephant, and her not being on the GSN Game Show Awards because her opinion differed with his, then you will know that more people are really seeing Barker for who he is. Go to Buzzerblog, or the GSN links, and find out why people are ending their comments with FYB - granted you have a right to love the man, and I wasn't reprimanding your judgment - just questioning it...
@DENo1MatchGameFan you got that right, but @ least Betty White got a Screen Actors Guild Award for being on television for 60 years and she's getting the last laugh over Bob Barker.
@tnawcwvictoria You got that one right, and no one can argue that Betty White is 'the queen of game shows', which makes Barker 'the king of egomaniacs' on the game show scene! I've never heard a bad thing said about Betty White - can't say the same about Barker though!
Scratch that, I've gone back and read some of your other comments about Bob, so I figure you won't have anything good to say. But I will say this, he thanked people in his special for prime time. For the AM show, and you can deny this all you want, but the format of the show didn't allow for him to say anymore that a minute of a send-off. And regardless of any problems he had, 50 successful years in anything is an accomplishment, and I don't find it egotistical to say THANK YOU for watching me.
The format of "Family Feud" didn't allow for Richard to say his goodbyes either, but he MADE the time - that's the biggest difference. Also, he should have said, 'thank you for watching me and the cast and crew from "TPIR", but he didn't - so there's where my remarks fit the scene of the crime, so to speak.
I was IN LOVE with Richard Dawson growing up. For some reason, I missed this final episode. If I'm not mistaken, I was in summer school retaking 8th grade science at the time;-)
Watching this is so emotional. It really tears me up. I still miss him doing the Feud, but greatly treasure the years he was a part of my daily life.
I doubt Richard Dawson will make an appearance back on the show. They did ask him to when Louie Anderson hosted but he declined so I doubt it but it would be nice if he did!
I love watching Richard on Match Game and Family Feud!
Richard Dawson was INDEED a Class Act along with other Game Show Greats:
Peter Marshall, Jim Lange, Jim Perry, the late Gene Rayburn, Tom Kennedy, the late Jack Narz, Dick Clark, Chuck Woolery, Bob Goen, the late Bill Cullen, Wink Martindale, Pat Sajak, Vanna White, Meredith Vieira, Vicki Lawrence, Summer Sanders, Ahmad Rashad, Howie Mandel, Mark L. Walberg, Marc Summers, JD Roth and of course Crystal Wallasch.
God Bless Richard Dawson, he will foreve be known as Mr. Family Feud.
Family Feud used to just be a forum for Dawson to molest his contestants. I'm glad they have cleaned up their act and given it to a real talent like O'Hurley.
Richard is a true gentleman & class act. He is one of the coolest, wittiest, suave, nicest actors I enjoy watching. God bless you Mr. Dawson. You Rock !!
Dawson was the man on the Feud. He had great memories that happend on the show. I like the O'Hurley version as well. I wished that he (O'Hurley hosted Price Is Right after Bob retired). God bless you Richard. Does anyone have the '81 episode with the Johnsons (with Dawson's future wife Grecthen)?
@AdamStabelli666 You got that right, he will ALWAYS be Family Feud, Ray Combs was good, but then he got too overrated, Dawson's Return was good, Louie Anderson was TERRIBLE, Richard Karn was good, but thankfully, during his 2nd year, they brought back the 300 point rule despite him saying Double/Triple The Points, John O'Hurley was pretty good, Ricki Lake was great on the Game$how Marathon Version, Al Roker wasn't Family Feud Material, and now, let's see what Steve Harvery is gonna do.
Dawson's Return was terrible, family feud 1994 was the beginning of the end of the show, I Didn't like it, the set was barren and lifeless and the game play and 4 players were not that good at all.
Richard Dawson was a game show icon. If Mount Rushmore consisted of game show hosts, Richard would have been one of them, along with Garry Moore, Wink Martindale, and Bud Colyer.
Barker blew it when he became EP of "TPIR" because his ego and activism both went overboard after that, and the show never recovered from all of the scandals he caused.
where'd you hear that Wiiplayer, I heard he was never even considered for the current version. except that Louie Anderson wanted him to amke a cameo on the premiere to wlecome Louie to the show.
as far as Richard's speech, he may have a had an ego the size of the alaskan coastline but that was very classy. and his take on race certainly bears food for thought.
Probably the epitome of game show sendoffs right here. Richard really put his heat into this show, and it shows right. Definitely one of the top moments of television history.
The last part wasn't part of the show. It wasn't even broadcast on ABC. I'm not sure what it was for, but I'm guessing it was a final few words for the audience that they didn't have time for in the original broadcast.
He sure did touch a lot of people. Women mostly. My mom and I thought he was a creep watching as a kid, but looking back, he was the only host for this show. His personality just oozed all over the show.
Wow is right! This is an amazing video...sensational! Inspirational! Timeless!
I saw this video for the first time yesterday, which just happened to be the first Family Day here in Ontario, Canada! There should be a Family Feud Day as well!!
He is a class act. He may have had many issues like EGO problems, fights with people behind the scenes. That really doesn't matter this guy had a magic than any host that has done the show since. The original version from 1976-85 was special. The extended footage that is shown in the last minute or so is so moving the story of the little girl who wanted the lollipops. If that does not bring a tear to your eye than I don't know what will.
Sounds like Richard had a very wise mother. I wish all mothers could pass on that belief that we're beautiful and of worth in all colors, creeds, and religions.
Not counting Running Man and his 1994 comeback, I think that Richard knew that this was not only his farewell speech for 'Feud but a farewell to his career in television (for the moment). It's too bad he wasn't active between 'Feud runs. He will always be my favorite 'Feud host!
Too bad Bob Barker couldn't have had a better send off on "TPIR" - if he wasn't so full of his ego, he would have had the original staff with him who made the show successful instead of the remains of what he destroyed with his lawsuits.
This was an end to the FF series at that point. TPIR is still in production, not going off the air. There is a difference and Bob most certainly did have a nice send off with his 50 years in televsion special. So give it a rest, Bob is the best!
Why the hell wouldn't Bob have had a nice send off? All the people that rallied against them either were fired, so there was no one left to 'stir the pot.' I hope Barker and his ego had a good time for his last show, as he has two more cases of litigation to finish before he retires to 'the big game show in the sky!

@JonSea31 My mistake. Sorry about that.
timhomer2009 11 months ago
@TimFrith24 The CBS version lasted until 1993 - the syndicated version until 1994.

InfernoCouchemar 2 years ago 4
This speech and the last episode made me cry a lot,but when he returned in 1994,it made me cry a lot harder, but with happy tears. Dawson has been the best host of Family Feud, and no one can outdo him,and no one can replace his legacy on the show.
familyfeudfan95 2 years ago 4

Disneydanny 2 years ago
The last unseen part was extremely touching and moving. I'm 31 and I'm not ashamed to say I have tears in my eyes as I type this.
By the way, Richard's daughter born in 1990 is named Shannon Nicole. I wonder if her middle name is in honor of the girl Richard was talking about.
TheJman2600 2 years ago
This is great, and Bob Barker's was great too. It wasn't long, it was indeed short, but it was Bob. And this was the second best game show host of all time Richard Dawson!!
jayneal12 2 years ago
I sure wouldn't say that Bob Barker was the BEST game show host of all time - hell no! Just ask everyone that was victimized by him and his staff since 1986... Also, the last "TPIR" was all about Bob, and nothing more. No models, no announcers, no staff, not even Mark Goodson was mentioned! One hellva guy (NOT!)
DENo1MatchGameFan 2 years ago
Are you joking, please tell me you aren't that cynical. First of all, on the last TPIR that Bob Barker hosted, he only talked of his departure at the very end. So I don't know how that's all about Bob. Second, Mark Goodson's name is mentioned at the end of every show, and still is today. Last but not least, the announcer was newer, the models came and went, the staff came and went, BOB DID NOT. But is it wrong to give 1 minute of spotlight to a man who was a host for 50 YEARS. Go watch it.
jayneal12 2 years ago
I sort of agree with you...
nlafavore 2 years ago
If you don't like him, fine, just say that. If it's not your opinion, which you ARE entitled to, that he is the BEST of all time, firstly you won't find many who will agree with you. Secondly, people went to see that show because of Bob, and I've been to a taping and was honored to be a contestant, he spent every minute of the hour with the audience. The audiences LOVED him. But surely he is ONE of the BEST to you? If not, then just admit you don't like him and don't reprimand me for liking him.
jayneal12 2 years ago
If you read about Barker's tiff with Betty White about Billy The Elephant, and her not being on the GSN Game Show Awards because her opinion differed with his, then you will know that more people are really seeing Barker for who he is. Go to Buzzerblog, or the GSN links, and find out why people are ending their comments with FYB - granted you have a right to love the man, and I wasn't reprimanding your judgment - just questioning it...
DENo1MatchGameFan 2 years ago
@DENo1MatchGameFan you got that right, but @ least Betty White got a Screen Actors Guild Award for being on television for 60 years and she's getting the last laugh over Bob Barker.
tnawcwvictoria 1 year ago
@tnawcwvictoria You got that one right, and no one can argue that Betty White is 'the queen of game shows', which makes Barker 'the king of egomaniacs' on the game show scene! I've never heard a bad thing said about Betty White - can't say the same about Barker though!
DENo1MatchGameFan 1 year ago
Scratch that, I've gone back and read some of your other comments about Bob, so I figure you won't have anything good to say. But I will say this, he thanked people in his special for prime time. For the AM show, and you can deny this all you want, but the format of the show didn't allow for him to say anymore that a minute of a send-off. And regardless of any problems he had, 50 successful years in anything is an accomplishment, and I don't find it egotistical to say THANK YOU for watching me.
jayneal12 2 years ago
The format of "Family Feud" didn't allow for Richard to say his goodbyes either, but he MADE the time - that's the biggest difference. Also, he should have said, 'thank you for watching me and the cast and crew from "TPIR", but he didn't - so there's where my remarks fit the scene of the crime, so to speak.
DENo1MatchGameFan 2 years ago
Fair enough. I can't argue with you, you have reason to feel the way you do.

Richard Dawson was INDEED a Class Act along with other Game Show Greats:
Peter Marshall, Jim Lange, Jim Perry, the late Gene Rayburn, Tom Kennedy, the late Jack Narz, Dick Clark, Chuck Woolery, Bob Goen, the late Bill Cullen, Wink Martindale, Pat Sajak, Vanna White, Meredith Vieira, Vicki Lawrence, Summer Sanders, Ahmad Rashad, Howie Mandel, Mark L. Walberg, Marc Summers, JD Roth and of course Crystal Wallasch.
God Bless Richard Dawson, he will foreve be known as Mr. Family Feud.

@AdamStabelli666 You got that right, he will ALWAYS be Family Feud, Ray Combs was good, but then he got too overrated, Dawson's Return was good, Louie Anderson was TERRIBLE, Richard Karn was good, but thankfully, during his 2nd year, they brought back the 300 point rule despite him saying Double/Triple The Points, John O'Hurley was pretty good, Ricki Lake was great on the Game$how Marathon Version, Al Roker wasn't Family Feud Material, and now, let's see what Steve Harvery is gonna do.
tnawcwvictoria 7 months ago
@tnawcwvictoria

Was The Last Part (Started At 4:04) Part Of The Show? And Also, What Was That For?
fecman94 3 years ago
The last part wasn't part of the show. It wasn't even broadcast on ABC. I'm not sure what it was for, but I'm guessing it was a final few words for the audience that they didn't have time for in the original broadcast.
bluebear1985 3 years ago
He sure did touch a lot of people. Women mostly. My mom and I thought he was a creep watching as a kid, but looking back, he was the only host for this show. His personality just oozed all over the show.

Too bad Bob Barker couldn't have had a better send off on "TPIR" - if he wasn't so full of his ego, he would have had the original staff with him who made the show successful instead of the remains of what he destroyed with his lawsuits.
DENo1MatchGameFan 4 years ago 4
This was an end to the FF series at that point. TPIR is still in production, not going off the air. There is a difference and Bob most certainly did have a nice send off with his 50 years in televsion special. So give it a rest, Bob is the best!
njboricuaparati 4 years ago
Why the hell wouldn't Bob have had a nice send off? All the people that rallied against them either were fired, so there was no one left to 'stir the pot.' I hope Barker and his ego had a good time for his last show, as he has two more cases of litigation to finish before he retires to 'the big game show in the sky!
