@GregHuismans Well Kreisler did obtain a head injury during World War One so he may have been "deluded and borderline insane" but he is sure a BRILLIANT man, violinist, and composer in many mens' eyes!
For those who are too young to listen his live concerts, these recording is probably the most accurate Kreisler sound we could ever find.
Regarding the double stopping of Heifetz and Kreisler, I hear the former play two violins while the latter one string one violin. However, both of them are perfect in intonation.
as people have said, Mr Kreisler was a phenomenally gifted technical musican, but his style was not in displaying fireworks foir the sake of them[as Heifetz was apt to do] - Kreisler was more a controlled violinist who forsook flamboyance for tone and artistry- As people have said , make no mitake, this man was a technnically sound and gifted violinist - A virtuoso of the highest order
the solo is pretty good. the orchestra arrangement was just okay. paganini wasnt a light, delicate composer. but to make his own arrangement is impressive
This man never faked in his life. His technic was superb. This was his own arrangement. If you think he could not play the origianal version you are delusional.
xD Ahaha, I love this man so much. I think he could play it as perfectly as anyone else if he wanted to, he's just playing it HIS way. :P He and Hassid are probably my two favorite violinists.
I love Kreisler--not my favorite rendition of Paganini I ,but you can hear the expression and unquestionable ability shining through, and it DID considerable work to put this complicated arrangement/orchestration together. It has deco sound of the era he lived in--when you consider this man was a physician first and a musician second--his avocation, this work is more than amazing and the man was brilliant
Sorry, he was a musician 1st, physician 2nd. He was a medic in WW1. He finished the Vienna Conservatory at 10 and the Paris conservatory at 12, both with 1st prizes. His medic days were brief and he was slightly wounded in WW1. I have read sections of his journal from the war. He went right back to performing and recording into the '50s despite being involved in 2 accidents, one where he was seriously injured as a pedestrian by a bus. He is my favorite violinist by far.
Maybe I should clarify--yes, his violin was always his first love--but after studying medicine he knew when it was called for it was his first duty, like in his book and he had to lay down his violin and use his medical knowledge for use for a higher calling because he had the hands that could save lives-which at the time was more important to him. In the book it says he was actually already discharged from his regiment but he didn't even question it--he went directly to help.
If it weren't for you I would never have heard this - thanks. It is very unusual and very pretty in some parts. Not only can one hear Kreisler's charm but the effort as well. My teacher told me that he seldom practiced. This is a gem nonetheless.
Oh shut up...this is much better than the stupid one we hear every day now...maybe more modern but not bad at all..not in style, but much better orchestrated!!
Bloody freaking amazing. Not the golden era perfection we expect now-a-days but still amazing. Plus it's nice to hear an arrangement of Paganini like this. I give it 5 stars. :D
Paganini Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 6 (recomposed by Kreisler), with Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia Orchestra, rec. December 13, 1936.

Gross. What the hell is this useless POS. Anyone who thinks he can improve on Paganini is just deluded and borderline insane.

I just heard the same Kreisler arrangement on a KQED (SanFrancisco PBS) broadcast of "Vienna Philharmonic - summer concert" series. It was
pretty amazing too (and modern sound).

Funky, yet awesome. This is his own arrangement?

Kreisler is revealing that his technique is far from Heifetz; he's struggling a bit with the concerto though as always his tone is beautiful

Kreisler was my all time favourite -but c'om this is an
all time fakery -the original was a way beyond him
as to technique -if any player tried this tom-foolery to-day
they would be laughed off the stage .But then he was the
"beloved" Fritz and this nonsense was forgiven . He was
the most beautiful of players within his range . But this
ain't no Paganini -it is Kreisler taking a stab at it . Poor
Paganini must be turning over in his grave .

Astounding tone and sensibility. It is this spirit which is so lacking in contemporary violinists. Thank you for posting this.

Awful arrangement, really destroyed the piece and the playing is really not that good.I guess that after Kogan all seem to be mediocre.
