@cumminsallthaway It works just like a speaker. You connect the cables from your amplifier to the coil of the hard-drive reading arm (just like you connect the coil in your speaker in your regular speakers). Then to get the best quality, you need to fasten the reading arm against the hard-drive casing to get as much vibrations as possible. The reason why this work is because it basically contains the same items as your speaker; A coil and a very strong magnet.
On my side, I'm building a record cutter lathe with a turntable, an inkjet printer (as cutter head carrier) and I will experience the record cutter head with hard disk drives (as stylus driver)! So, I look forward of the results!...
@AmIStoned 240p wont portray good sound so it's pointless. he was referring to high quality sound (speakers) which are clearly labeled int he video title.
@FurreFurre i did it! kinda hard cuz it was a tiny laptop hdd so i had to take it apart to solder it, it works but its silent, im gonna make a trick to make it sound like a drum (should be nice to fill in on my speakers)
@acfrazier Have a look at a regular speaker. It requires only minimal movement to produce sound. Here, the arm is tensed to the harddrive casing forcing the whole harddrive to vibrate. The vibrations are then amplified by the shelf the harddrives are positioned on.
to be honnist from the three ive made (vids pending) its they are fine with low amplitude (no big currents) and high frequencies, this is not a high suiatbility set of hard drive speekers, he's just split them
the arm on my drive worked as a speaker for about 5 seconds, now it just twitches for a few seconds, then the whole drive turns off, including the arm. Any suggestions, should I remove the board on the other side of the drive?
@FOTPFan Try removing the logic board (the circuit board on the bottom of the drive) as this could be shorting out the audio signal or its overloading your amplifier or audio source.
@Dawid4Real hard drives use a coil of wire around a magnet, when power goes into the wire it moves the head, this is prity much the same thing as on a speaker so it works
@tistatos depends, the spindle motor is often low resitance, basically a short curcuit, decent amps will cut off (self preservation) other's will heat up. be carful with any speaker acting as a full range that when mesure has a restance of less then 3 ohmes
This as explained many times before, they are indeed real, the disc it not spinning but it is the arm that is making the movement, hence the sound. Read up on how speakers actually work and you will find that both contains a coil and a magnet.
Actually, it isn't visibly moving at all, even though I didn't lock it into place. I was just assuming that it was some part of the read-write arm vibrating that was what produced the sound.
It is, but the movement is too small and too quick, basicly by tensing it into the casing, you get the whole HD to vibrate in the frequencies, giving much better sound than just the arm vibrating.
I made one today and it works and all (albeit rather quiet), but I have a question. Is the arm supposed to be vibrating vertically (perpendicular to the platters) or horizontally (parallel to the platters)?
Neither, if it is vibrating you havnt tensed it down enough on the harddrive. Try using a screw and washer somewhere to be able to adjust the tension of it. You can see how Ive done on the right harddrive at the bottom right, there you can see the screw and washer I use :)
They are not fake. Having the discs spinning would just create alot of unwanted noise. Read up on how speakers work and read the comments below on how I did to make it work and you'll understand the principle of it, its very easy.
The reason the sound is loud and clear is that the arm is almost compleatly locked in position with a plastic washer and a screw, which makes the whole HD vibrate to the sound, instead of just the arm. This makes the sound alot louder and if used ontop of a table or similar, much better quality of the sound too.
The head is tensed against the platter but not locked on it, it is however locked with a screw into the casing of the HD. Basicly instead of having the readingarm vibrating at slow frequencies like others do, mine is locked so that it only vibrates at high frequencies that are within the hearing range.
Its quite easy. Just get two wires and a broken harddrive. Open the harddrive and figure out which solderpoints goes to the arms coil, then solder your wires onto it and connect it to your amplifier.
Just like with a speaker, the louder the sound the more the arm has to move. Your strategy of generating sound is by playing it as soft as possible, much like an LP needle, instead of trying to play it loud which will sound more like a squeeky cellphone

240p videos on youtube have very low audio quality. Uploading any music as a 240p video will ruin it!
Google "h3xed youtube bitrate" to see a list of approximate bitrates per resolution.

@AmIStoned The HDD Speakers produce high quality sound, the movie is not high definition if thats what you were thinking.

just made my first hdd speaker, if i connect the spindle motor, will i get better sound?
tistatos 2 years ago
@tistatos
You will not, it will only add noice.
What you need to do instead is to control the tension on the reading arm so that it will not move all over the place, as this also creates bad sound.

LOL the arm and the disk aren't moving!
TigerSlashX 3 years ago
The disc isnt moving since it just create unwanted noices.
However, the arm is moving but maybe just 0.25 mm back and forth. The reason is that the less movement, the better sound you get.
Just try comparing mine with one that do have the arm moving more.

how does it work, what is vibrating what
thedcase 3 years ago
Basicly you got most of the elements of a speaker in a harddrive, especially the most important features: Coil and strong magnets.
What will happen is that the coil will be moving, and the rest of the structure acting as a resonator. I hope I got that right ^^
