yep i just installed ubuntu on the eee pc i downloaded the iso image from the ubuntu website and then used a simple program called unetbootin to burn the iso image to usb 4gb stick
yep installing ubuntu on the eee pc is easy and is possible i just got ubuntu working on my eee pc i just downloaded the iso from the ubuntu website then used a simple program called unetbootin to burn the iso image to a 4gb usb stick!!
Either download and run the eee script for ubuntu or just install ubuntu eee from the ubuntu-eee website - it sorts EVERYTHING out and has Netbook remix which is pretty awesome but if you wand the 3D cube desktop and Beryl/Compiz effects, you'll need to switch to a full desktop with the "desktop switcher" application or just remove the netbook widget. Wireless strength is actually the same as on Xandros but the signal strength indicator is calibrated to read the strength differently, that's all.
Nice video, I'm thinking of buying one of these badboys to stick Ubuntu on it. Did the wifi work straight away on it?
I use Ubuntu at home, so I'm pretty used to it. I'm guessing the reason Ubuntu didn't boot to start with was that there was a problem with 'X' or the interface that linux uses. So you booted Ubuntu without booting into the actual visual interface, just the command line. This is only a guess, but it's likely that could've happened.
Thanks man, I won't give up, I ordered my eee and should receive it soon. I'll try to keep you updated if I get around and make it work... btw i'm a mac guy too!
nice commentary bro. nothing more soft on the ear then listening to someone just say it like I would.. pretty good job. and even though I put xp on mine I commend you for sticking with it till you got it then posting up all that hard work. goodluck. let us know if you if you experiment with anything else.
How long did the commands take? If I'm reasonably experienced in computers and Linux, can I do it? I'm still thinking about buying an eeePC over the weekend, as it seems awesome. Please tell me your thoughts!
oh man i wish you knew before! you can get a version of ubuntu called eeebuntu which is already optimized for the eeepc. i have ubuntu on my desktop and i love it too, and it also took me forever to work around the bugs and install compiz, etc. it probably took me as long as you! im planning on buying the 8 or 8.9 inch eeepc when its available, and plan on installing eeexubuntu.
I already installed eeexubuntu and i thought it sucked there are still alot of bugs in it and also the interface isn't any better then xandros what comes on it. but thanks for the info and the cool comment.
good job, man... I work with linux for eight years now and I tell you, you never get rid of those "I don't know what I just did but it works"-moments :)

So, you're running this OS off your SD card? All you had to do was select it during install?
From what I've heard, you don't want to do many installs on your SSD , if its that easy and runs that well off the SD card. Then great!
spacer77 3 years ago
well there are a couple options, you can use an external drive or a 16g sd card
bluntknife30 3 years ago

Can you tell me how long it takes Ubuntu to start up? I'm tempted to get rid of the linux distro it comes with altogether.
