grandad always spoke of him as a snake in the grass. Said he was very difficult and mucked up some careers of performers because they wouldn't kiss his ass.
Kewl!! I remember him from my kid days. I wish I could find the recording of him singing "The Thing". I know he made it because my dad had a 45 rpm disk.
What a distinctive voice - great instrumentation on this version. "Hawaiian" music was a great introduction for the earliest guitar dominated pop songs.
A G invented talk radio, long before many who make the claims now daze. And the first shock jock that I ever heard was a fella from Cleveland (WERE and WHK) namely Gary Dee Gilbert, long before Stern and Imus. Radio used to be FUN, and A G was good times. Thanks, this makes me wanna Hoola!
@umajunkcollector YES!! AG invented talk radio!! No one like him anymore for sure. St. Louis we had Jack Carney and Jim White...
Sports of course was Jack Buck... and Harry Caray..Of course Harry was fired (1969) after he got caught with the Busch daugher-in-law in front of the Chase Hotel here...Dip couldn't make it across the street without being hit by a car... Everything was pretty hush hush here about it. Then suddendly Caray is announcing for the Cubbies. Lot of good that did them
I remember this song he sang on tv from my childhood days.

Someone said I sounded 'better than Arthur Godfrey' at my last gig, so I had to check him out. Almost as good as my uke playing.

The only version of, "The Thing" I can remember was recorded by Phil Harris. You'll find it on You Tube.

@Brownee46
I wouldn't be surprised. He reportedly was quite a daredevil pilot at times.
