I was there, if you look very carefully u can see me holding a can of beer wearing a black hoodie.
At first i thought there was something wrong because he took a while to get out. I feel sorry for the engineers though they only get a couple hours to take the engine apart and rebuild it and then after all that it explodes.
@thepricylon Bad idea, because opening the hood would allow the air to go into the engine (because of the direction the wind is blowing in relation to the car engine, assuming that you lifted the bonnet from the front of the car, not where the wind shield is), where the fire is coming from, the fire needs that air to burn, thus when you open the bonnet, the fire would literately EXPLODE out of control.
I work as a fire marshall at our family's track and the one thing I would have done differently is first cut the power switch on back and then reach inside the car and shut off the nitrous bottles. The first CO2 bottle would have extinguished the fire.
@tgm9991 Most power switches are on the outside of the car! The rear to be specific! What if there was a fire near the drivers seat and he could not see or reach the power switch? Therefore in case if that occurs it's better to have the switch on the outside!
@whiteknuckles717 I'm sure that i've seen cut off switches inside the drivers area but then again it was a btcc or a gt car that i seen it on and thought maybe they switches inside as well as outside incase the backs on fire but i'll find out next year when i start marshalling at croft.
i thought they have a fire engine on standby at the startline for the FIA groups and the pickup tender at the finish line, hanheld extinguishers are a bit lightweight even for a simple street car fire
@baldandold If you notice the white pickup the hose diddnt have any pressure in it hence why they were running around with CO2 bottles, the quad put most of it out with the foam but i did laugh at how the fire went out and then the fire truck arrived lol
You guys are harsh. Looks like a very good and quick response from the safety crew. Most tracks in the rest of the world are nowhere near that well equipped and efficient. An average dragstrip would have a few handheld fire bottles and guys in Tshirts operating them. Only the largest events get a crew like shown.
I am sat around 5 rows in front and 10 seats to the side of you, and the main bonnet scoop landed about 4 seats to the left of me, luckily no-one was sitting there. apparently there was a crack in the NOS pipe after the cut off in the engine bay so the NOS just kept fuelling the fire. also there was a huge headwind that day, and the firecrew are rubbish. also this was a brand new car, and the team had been racing for many years, afterwards, I saw the pit crew, they were all on the verge of tears
Looks like the fire fighting equipment is totally unsuitable for purpose, all i can say is it's a good job the car didn't crash with the driver trapped in the car. He'd be toast now. The pod need to get there act together as usual.
AWESOME!!!! Nice fireworks show! This is what happens when you DONT use a cutout relay for the fuel and nitrous. When the oil pressure goes away, the fuel gets shut off. Maybe next time he will learn?
@Harleybum. Moron. Car was a beautiful '55 Bel Air, not a piece of shit. And Henri is a really nice guy, been racing for 20 odd years. Trashed his car, he was understandably very upset. Its the end for him, he cannot afford to get back into racing. Keep stupid comments like that to yourself.
Thank goodness for the firecrew putting it out pretty quick.
No one said Henri was anthing but a nice guy (never met him)
"Stupid Comment"?? in your inexperianced eyes you think... but then again you're a PUTZ....
"Cant afford to get back into racing"??? Well we all understand it wasnt insured, but you care to explain WHY he didnt think to use a automatic shutoff for the fuel and nitrous? That's CHEAP insurance against fire.
@Harleybum it was also bad work by the rescue marshalls that was first on scene, you allways shut of the electricity and gas and then you starts put out the fire and remove the driver from the car. and the first marshalls did not have the right equipment. when you are working the bigger classes like these you always have a protective hood on wich these two didnt have, they are lucky that there was no nos explosion!
top of the notch fire fighting equipment. The pickup with the shower hose is best!

They should've got some LN2 based extinguishers to prevent the heat from traveling to the fuel tank.

@baldandold the handheld fire extingushers are better then using the pointless bloody low pressure water hoses they where trying to use.
