so cute!.. hope you dont mind answering a question :)
how long should zebra finches be sitting on the babies for? My parents were sitting on them constantly, but now (around days 8-10) they somtimes both stay out of the nest for a period of time, then sometimes one will randomly go sit in the nest for a bit. They are both still feeding the babies well. Should I be concerned they arent sitting on them more often like they used to?
@JennaRaine it's totally normal, as the babies get older they get better able to regulate their own temperature and require less sitting on by the parents, also many chicks produce a certain amount of thier own heat, so larger clutches require less sitting time.
If the female finch is ready then you should see eggs the next day and they will mate through out the laying process. takes about a month and a half to fully fledge after hatching .
thank also one more question my female has only one orange feather in her left cheek, JUST ONE. woulddat be considering hera male or can a female finch have an orange chee. well one feather at least
for zebra finches about 14 days to hatch, some finches wont lay unless diet is just right or if there no nesting place or they are stimulated by a male.
this are really cute i remember when our finches had their babys one came out really weird lol it has like alot of feathers on top of his head it looks like he has hair lol

sounds like you may have some genes mixed in from the pied mutation. doesn't mean anything except that some babies may be multi colored.

Reading the description you would know that these were orphaned, I don't hand raise finches unless it's necessary to save the birds life.

that "thing" is just a porcelain bowl the whole bowl is set in a brooder that has a carefully controlled heating and humidity element.

when they grow bigger you don't see the crop anymore?
hermit855 2 years ago
they always have a crop it is just more hidden by featherswhen older and they tend to not fill it up as full as adults..
