Callen, the oud virtuoso, has studied Arabic music for about 10 years, and he has taught a few of us in Oklahoma about the Maqam. We love it! He has a cd, called "Verse" that you can here songs from on his myspace. Thanks for the comments.

Very nice. I thought you had to grow up hearing middle-eastern musical scales to play like that. I was wrong.
