I also met Herb at a seminar he did around for a store I worked at in 1980 and a few days later saw him at the NAMM show in Chicago. A great guy who shared some ideas with me that I remember to this day. Had a chance to play his guitar after seminar. A true artist and a true gentleman.
...Mr. Herb was my favorite guitar player and we, who like this kind of music, become orphans after he passed away. Somebody can explain to me what is the metal device that he use in his Gibson, just close of the first fret? Thanks for posting!!!
The bar you see tips down on the first fret near the nut. It is covered with a soft felt to dampen the open strings. I used to have one but was dumb enough to leave it on my old guitar when I sold it. I haven't seen one in the last 20 years.
@mrrmont7 ...Thank you so much to answer. I never saw some device like that too, but if the "master" Herb used it, it works a lot, and I´ll search for some to try to repeat his magic chords!! Big hug, Doc
What a lovely tune, this song is called "Danny Boy".

If you'd like to hear a great album of duets, try Pablos' "Two For The Road", Herb Ellis and Joe Pass

The Device is called "The Van Eps String Damper".
Nice Vid, thanks.
I drove Herb around town when he was here for a clinic, cranky, but in a good natured manner. (if you know what I mean)

Herb Ellis plays with very good tone. To play with good tone with a flat pick is an art in itself.
