japan were not as good as duran duran and lasted about 1% as long. Indeed duran duran have produced about 750 times what japan have ever released, sold about 1 billion more records, probably around 1 million times for famous and infinatley more talented.
but in saying that, will all people rembember that every band and song write has an influence.
Not to mention Richard Barbiere of Porcupine Tree for all the progressive rock fans out there... Sadly, we lost bassist Mick Karn to cancer in January 2011. R.I.P. Mick!
@durtyweakend I really don't know about that any more. I've listened to the 'Quiet Life' and 'Gentlemen Take Polaroids' albums quite extensively recently and there's probably only one or two songs which sound anything like something you'd find on a Duran Duran album. The only resemblance that 'Quiet Life' has with 'Planet Earth' is that they both use a similar arpeggiator synth, the similarities stop there. 'Halloween' sounds like a Duran Duran song, but only because of it's instrumentation.
@DuranFan09 I agree with you completley. there are small elements of similiarity in the odd track. my question is - where and when does a view to a kill sound like japan? or where does skin trade sound like japan? or hungry like the wolf? japan fans who cite duran duran as being influenced by them are really only nursing their egos. duran duran were and still are a unique musical force which are distinct and different from japan at all levels.
Japan in the same sentence as Duran Duran outrageous, Japan were more musically talented as natural musicians compared to Duran Duran, I think you'll find Duran Duran copied Japan in the way they styled themselves especially their keyboard player Nick rhodes who blatantly ripped of Sylvians hair style and attempted to emulate his look's, other than Richard Barbieri the rest of the band were not musically trained, and to this day Mick Karn is viewed as one of the best bass players in the world.
@ebbhead20 Your full of cock. I bet your asshole is so wide, the neighbours cat could crawl in and out of it, while at the same time, you masterbate to davy sylvian in quiet life video? how close is that??
@gregingram1970 i masterbate? Hmmm, just a good advice, learn the language before insulting people on a higher level than whatever cave place you crawled out from? It`s David Sylvian,In THE Quiet Life video, and finally it`s Masturbate you smeghead :-)
@ebbhead20 HIgher Place? what do you mean like a higher intellectual level than me? is that what you meant rubber band head? I think your arsehole has been drilled so much you need crutches to get to your drug dealing boyfriends to score your bag of smack you thick, retarded, backward thinking, stuckin in 1980 brain, spastic with no common sense and nothinb but freshair whistlening between your big dumb ears. Go and tug your puney man pole to davy sylvian (bryan ferry lover) - cunt.
@gregingram1970 you have a thing with butts and man holes and so on, are you sure you dont have an issue here? Come out of the closet kid, it`s no shame in 2012 :-)
@ebbhead20 No shame here...red blood. You are in a higher place than me so you could analyse me writing, interpret it and conclude my sexual orientation no problem - coz you watch CSI Miami, dont you? after tugging your man pole to davy sylvian of course...
@gregingram1970 Just so every tosspot gets this,it`s a known fact that Rhodes was a HUGE Sylvian fan, and was known to copy his style before being in bands, so his look has nothing to do with being in DD, even friends of Rhodes has talked about this in interviews :-)
@ebbhead20 HI rubberband head...its not a known fact at all davy sylvian was admired by nick rhodes. thats a known fact thats been created by japan fans and its actually mythology thats evolved into a fact thats actually incorrect. people like you who say these inaccurate things are really only appeaing to the hero status in your own psyche in order to reinforce your love for your hero. In this case davy sylvian with an arsehole like a broken catflap.
@paintedship I dont understand what that has to do with this argument? I really cannot work out what pointing to davy sylivan coz hes a singer and nick rhoses is a key board player? so whats the link? simon le bon is the song writer with duran duran not nick rhodes. you should look to his influences you thick cunt. Hows that gaping asshole of yours tonight?
@paintedship Nick rhodes tried to look like sylvian...and sylvian being a singer and nick rhodes being a keyboard player...(now im considering this in my mind)...and im working out how this fact (if thats what it is) has shaped the entire muscial history of duran duran. My take on this: if you cite that tenuous pish one more time i will probably have an annuerism laughing. EVERYBODY who cares knows davy sylivan modelled david bowie, bryan ferry and andy warhol. So did nick rhodes.
@jrmetmoi nick rhodes looked like david sylvian? you mean both sylvian and rhodes looked like andy warhol? and both looked like they fitted into a new romantic style of the early 80s. more so, nick rhodes changed his look on the 2nd album. he looked nothing like david sylvian. nothing. so japan fans should realise and accept this. david sylivan had zero influence on nick rhodes. im sure nick rhodes would say the same. fucking irritiating reading this japan fan pish
@U2ROPA I won't disagree that Duran Duran (and other acts) were influenced by Japan but Duran's first two albums are still fantastic ("Duran Duran" and "Rio"). The only reason they get slated by certain people is because they were "pretty boys" in the 80s and because of how much mainstream exposure their lackluster third album got. Their new album "All You Need Is Now" is also great and it fits nicely with the sound of their first two albums. For the record, I love Japan too. Pure innovators.
@U2ROPA duran duran were more talented and more musically talented than japan. its clear. japan had 2 albums any good and anything beore GTP was fucking pish. As for the look of nick rhodes. this is pathetic. andy warhold is who the both modelled on. nick rhodes changed his look every week fffs...you thick biased uneducated insular thinking and retarded sack of monkey sperm.
Best band of the early 80's saw these live about 5 times so many happy memories like breaking down about 4 times on way to sheffield city hall to see these!!!!!!!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have been trying to get into this band for a bit now, mainly because I love Richard Barbieri's current work, but I have trouble witht his synthy-pop stuff of their later albums.
@fiendwithoutaface66 Turned into more pop? is that not what japan were - a pop band? i think you want to believe japan were something other than a commercial pop band with a record deal to sell records to fans. thats capitalism and its what japan got a record deal to do. Of course, they failed to be successfully commerical because, simply, they were not good enough. they did not have enough good tracks to be successfull enterprise. a failed pop band you could say.
i had a signed copy of this single.sold it to a boy in my class for a fiver which was quite a lot to a sixteen year old in those days.wish id kept it.top band and has been said this band laid the foundationds for bands like Duran Duran and Spandau ballet to prosper.
If it wasn't for Japan there would be no Duran Duran,Kajagogoo,Thompson Twins, etc. They were the pioneers of the New Romantic movement. So influential! I'm a hard rock fan but really appreciate what they did. I bought this exact album as an import and was so impressed with the entire recordings.
I always associate that with visage, duran duran etc. to me it was kind of phony/trendy in a way. Look how duran duran quickly dropped it on their second album. Japan never said they were new romantic but they were one of the bands the later imitated.
@fiendwithoutaface66 japan looked very alike duran duran but musically duran duran are not like japan...for a lay person to observe, compare and contrast imagery of duran duran and japan they would never conclude the bands are that far apart - if comparing only the first one year of duran durans career. of course, duran duran were much bigger globally and rightly so because they were so much better than japan with a catalogue of various styles of music...
@shockmastershocksu I think you mean i am unwilling to read rubbish about duran duran copying japan. duran duran were and still are far fucking better than japan. ffs duran duran including solo projects have 15 albums and 30 years of live touring. japan are all but 2 ablums. ffs. what shite you write you spastic cunt.
@fiendwithoutaface66 indeed, duran duran dropped new romantic look - hence disconnecting from the style japan used. so important in duran durans diverse styles and sounds. very much an indication of duran durans ability to go in many directions and highlights their creative superiority over japan. its one reason why duran durans career has been collossal and japans was tiny and brief.
@fiendwithoutaface66 ...good good. im disgusted with japan now...because i have been traumatised and offended by the rediculous comments about japan V Duran Duran with japan fans. Crazy and super-funny all the same!
@yoshibax agreed i say this alot and i get alot of crap from others on it..but the facts are there.nick rhodes looks like he could be davids brother...once i got into japan i lost all intrest in duran duran well thats not totally true...but as a bass player and a writer youve got to be stupid to not understand that whether JP or david wants to openly admit this thier impact was a HUGE force in the new romantic time..japan are one of my biggest inspirations..god bless mick karn sick with cancer.
@yoshibax what a lotta shite. duran duran would have been duran duran without japan. ffs roxy music gave birth to an illlegitimate bastard child called japan and it looked like as if kraftwerk were the father. you fucking thick retarded and insular point of viewed twat. fuck u.

It says it on electric barbarella's single cover
"Band founder Nick Rhodes:
-... drawing from the musical, visual and lyrical stylistic elements of Bowie, Ferry, Sylvian and Eno...-"
No doubt Rhodes tried to look like Sylvian, he and John Taylor were the biggest fans of Japan.
