SECOND TO NONE...Genesis is registred in the music-history as an up-and-outstanding bunch of talented (but remained) simple guys, who met at school...and as a band never stopped re-inventing themselves ,driven by the continuous search for the unrevealed paths in creativity and muscial exellence.
Wheter you know them for 35 years and grew up with them-growing-further ,or you just came along today...it will be yours to find out!
I like listening to how they take advantage of the new equipment they had from 73 to 75 (ARP, More drums, ect...) when they play the stuff they wrote before that had that stuff.
remember hearing the recorded version of this live album for the first time. Changed everything for me regarding progressive rock from the opening of Collin's hi hat and the build in from there. Phil's retirement from live performance certainly pulled me in here today
@westrokker You did? You were at the....ah I forgot the name of it! I remember hearing comercials about it but I was too young. It changed to "The Lighthouse Limitied" a disco in the later 70s. Reflections! That's it. Mike Rutherford told me they played there when I meet them at an autograph session at the grand opening of Peaches Records and Tapes in 78. He said about 50 were there.
Once again, thank you. I had no idea that any of this footage existed. I could only relive those long ago moments in my head, until now. I've seen every Genesis tour (in US around NY) since 73 (I think), up to Lamb, and every Gabriel tour after his first album with the Secret World tour being my favorite. Just wonderful getting to see this stuff again. Almost brings tears to my eyes. Thank you again.
This is great! On the genesis live album (1973) I think they should of put on suppers ready but of course it was too long to put on a vinyl record back than...but its the 2000's now!! I'm sure they still have that audio somewhere and if they wanted to they could just add a second disk with suppers ready if they have to. Get on your shit people!
@rocker70sman sorry more to say, it has the full lamb (with vocal and guitar overdubs) and has some other live tracks like supper. Can be listened to or bought at we7
They didn't perform Supper's Ready on that tour, it wasn't ready for live performance. The following tour (Selling England) did include Supper's Ready.
@Incudius Instantly after Peter left, they felt like the audience couldnt handle it. Even though it only is in 6/4 time (compare to Turn it On Again in 13/8) it sounds much more advanced due to the monotonous riff that runs throughout with PGs singing on top
I am amazed that such a video of this premium era Genesis even exists!Goes without saying that this is the most effective, dramatic and jaw dropping track of the original prog rock era...Thanks for sharing Magog!
As much credit as Alice Cooper gets for being the creator of shock rock I feel as this is proof that Peter Gabriel was overlooked as being a master of it as well as theatrics and technical ability on a level that has never been surpassed by any rock frontman since.
...to this day, Peter Gabriel, does not only remain one the Greatest Music Composer & Most Creative Stage performer ever, he is one of the Most Influencial public Mind, Heart & Human Rights Voice on Earth!!
That's funny. I've never heard Gabriel and Cooper mentioned in the same sentence before. Perhaps because Cooper had very little talent and Gabriel was one of the greatest artists for 4 decades.
I'm sure I have that on DVD, so I will watch it. I can't imagine that Cooper could have had too much influence considering that Cooper is only two years older. Peter was 23 when he gave that interview. I would doubt that he still feels that way. I liked School's Out and I'm 18 by Cooper when I was a kid. I just don't see any similarities between the two. Cooper's intent was to shock people, where Gabriel's intent was far more artistic imo.
Are you serious??? Name 10-20 of them. Cooper was a "flash in the pan" compared to Gabriel. Peter's career has been far more successful than Cooper's. How long did Cooper's 15 minutes of fame last? Provide me with a list of the "iconic" songs Cooper put out. I'm afraid that it is you that knows nothing. I have a collection of albums, cassettes, CDs and DVDs in excess of 5,000. I was also the owner of a record store in the late 70's and early 80's. What credentials do you have?
@bt1169 You're a dickhead. cd's and DVD's in excess of 5000, is that all!!!!!!!!!!!!! My record collection has over 270,000 vinyl albumsand 18,000 cd's including everything and anything done by both Genesis and Cooper. Come back to me when you know what you're talking about
I know I've won a disagreement when the other person resorts to name calling. I'm glad it was so easy to get under your skin. LOL Where's that list of iconic songs by Cooper? 270,000 albums? The trailer you live in couldn't hold that many. I think your mom's calling you for dinner, so you should probably get off her computer and go eat. LOL Have you ever listened to the crap that Alice Cooper put out? Write down a list of the iconic songs you're referring to. Long on talk, short on stalk. LOL
Do you have Genesis "Spot the Pigeon" on red vinyl? Let's say that you're 60 years old and began collecting at age 10. You would have to collect 5400 each year to accumulate 270,000. Where would you get the money to buy that many? If you stacked 270,000 albums they would extend about 1 mile high. Does that make any sense at all? Do the math and write a list of all of his iconic songs. Send me a list of your albums. Maybe we can trade. I hate to admit it, but you're pretty funny. Thanks!
@tobycat11 Toby, that rock program was NBC's "The Midnight Special," & I've never forgotten it because it was that night that I became a Genesis fan. I remember Wolfman Jack talking over a lot of the mellotron into & thinking, "Wolfy! SHUTUP!" Then, as the song played, my jaw hung open & I couldn't believe what I was seeing; "Who the fuck ARE these guys?!" The rest is history. Still one of the greatest prog songs of all time--a masterpiece.
My First taste of Genesis was this number as they opened at Oxford on their Foxtrot tour. My seat in the gods, cost 40p even at the time it was cheap. What a gig I was converted there and then. Within a couple of weeks I had bought everything they had done up to then. Peter was such a personality on stage, and captivated the whole crowd. They went from an act on the edge of wider acceptance to Prog super stars in the space of the tour. The music press buzz of August 72 did it for them.
You know, even though Gabriel claimed to have studied David Bowie to develop his stage technique at the time, he was able to create a far more surreal, alien presence and atmosphere--using far cheaper costumes and makeup--than his mentor. One almost truly believes, even watching grainy ol' 16mm footage, that this strange frontperson is not really human! And he was able to play a far more varied range of characters--from the Watcher to the old man to Rael--than anyone else ever did...
A voz de Peter Gabriel está verdadeiramente extraordinaria !!! A bateria de Phil Collins e Tony Banks nas teclas é de se perder a cabeça... não há nada como isto na historia da musica contemporanea.
I really loved "A Trick of the Tail". An album that seems to rarely be mentioned when talking about Genesis. "Selling England by the Pound" & The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" were absolute masterpieces. Love the early stuff, too. "Duke" had it's moments. After that, what happened with Genesis was shameful and disgraceful, but I refuse to let it stain what was a truly original and groundbreaking group. Long Live Progressive Rock! See, I didn't use the word "Pretentious" once. Oops.
First concert I ever went to, Genesis at the Phillipshalle 1973. There were no projected eyes on the psychlorama, just Gabriel's dayglow and silhouette. Sounds silly but way back in1973 the effect was truly menacing.
You're right, even today this sort of thing in a live rock concert setting would provide a good shock value. Nobody today is doing anything even close to this. And nobody is making nearly as good of music either.
After "Wind and the Wuthering (1976)," I think Genesis' best studio albums were behind them. And after it, the progressive rock era was just about over. This is the period when punk and new wave was taking over and the prog rockers were considered dinosaurs (unfortunately) by many. Bands like Genesis, desperate to adapt to a changing music market, morphed into a slicker pop sound. Sadly, by 1980, MOST prog rock was gone - or at least not selling like it did. But it was glorious while it lasted!
Don't ever count out Duke. After that only glimpses of true Genesis did ever re-emerge. Throw out "Misunderstanding" and you got yourself one powerful album.
Thanks for informing me about this one. After the weak "Then There Were Three," I assumed that Genesis' best days were behind them. I remember becoming very disillusioned that the quality of music of some of my favorite bands had begun to deteriorate. Around the same time, Gentle Giant made the miserable "Giant for a Day." And like other progressive bands, they called it quits around 1980. How long has it been since bands like Yes or ELP could fill a coliseum? A VERY long time! An era gone!
Time is running out, since Gabriel is reluctant to re-unite the boys should get together with Hackett, do TOTT and WAW , Suppers Ready, The Knife, Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show full length in smaller venues. Chester on drums, forget the newer stuff. I'd be there at any cost. Nostalgia is big and worth the price. As a true Genesis fan I know you'd be there.
Yes, I'd be there, depending upon which side of the pond they toured on - doubt there would be enough interest to make it financially sustainable in the U.S. (though I could be wrong - maybe in NY, LA). The only interest I ever read about Gabriel reuniting was for The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and only then if it was properly staged and rehearsed. As for the rest, I wouldn't think any of them terribly needs the money, and not sure a nostalgia act interests them.
Yes, mikelmart. Too bad that stinkburger was included on that album. Also, I'm of the opinion that driving the last spike was one of their greatest songs, especially lyrically. Credit for those lyrics must go to Mister Collins. It seems there was at least on song on all their albums post-Duke to make it worth buying them. Domino is a fine example.
Got to agree with you,Selling England by The Pound was my first Genesis album, purchased after reading a review in MM or NME (can't remember which),I was 15 at the time and desperately looking for something different from the chart c*** at the time, this was closely followed by Genesis Live, then The Lamb which I also found difficult at first but then a light seem to switch on in my head and I "got it",after that I loved that album like no other
So far, my favorite live performance of this song. Gabriel seems to be chanelling some kind of alien intelligence through himself. Completely unique. Anybody here familiar with early Marillion and Fish's obvious homage to Gabriel-voice, lyrical style and kabuki style make-up?
Thank you for letting me know my memory wasn't overblown. I remember seeing a similar version on TV (Don Kirshner's maybe?). I remember the cape spreading and the alien movments, but in other YouTube videos of this he is more static. Gabriel really had his act down by this time - if it was an act. I'm thinking he really is from another planet. Why do we have so much pop garbage preserved but not more of this?
Does anyone know if this is from the black show? Compared to the Shepperton video, Gabriel's makeup is much different, the lighting is much darker, and he goes crazier at the end.
Didn't you say the same thing on another version of this song? When people say they were ahead of their time, I don't think they're referring to the rhythm.
this performance is right on target as always for genesis. superb. My only complaint is I'm tortured by the camera remaining fixated in one place, on peter. I want to see hackett, banks, rutherford and collins doing their thing for a moment or two, peter could still get the lion's share. I know beggars can't be choosers...fans can't get enough. good show
Can you really actually understand how far ahead of its time this band was...this was 1974! The presenation and the sophistication of the music itself was at a whole nother level for the early 70's....Just amazing...)
Thanks for sharing! Brings back some great memories. I saw this tour, Spring of 1974. In Phoenix AZ. I was vacationing in Phoenix, and it was a last minute decision to go to the concert. We bought tickets the day of the concert...we got 8th row center! But more amazing...the concert was in a school gym, and hardly anyone showed up, so we moved to 3rd row center! I will never forget that concert! I saw Genesis perhaps a half dozen times after this, but this is the concert I remember most.
I am fairly astonished to see such a high quality version of anything from a "black show", yet alone a full version. Do you have anything else from this show?
I'm twelve... I wish that my generation knew what good music is. When I ask them what good music is they reply with Mac Miller, Niki Minaj and a bunch of other people that I don't care about. I'm sorry what my generation has done to music, I really am. :(

Selling England by the Pound was an easy album to get into and it quickly became my favourite.
Wind and Wuthering was an easy album to get into and it rapidly became my favourite.
The Lamb... was a difficult album to get into nevertheless it soon became a favourite...
I could go on but no space.

As a true Genesis fan I know you'd be there.
mikelmart 2 years ago

Why do we have so much pop garbage preserved but not more of this?

love that Mellotron intro, magic!

Does anyone know if this is from the black show? Compared to the Shepperton video, Gabriel's makeup is much different, the lighting is much darker, and he goes crazier at the end.

Great songs ok, ahead of their time , no, its a simple staccato rhythm in 6/8 big deal for 10 minutes, you want ahead of their time listen to YES.

Didn't you say the same thing on another version of this song? When people say they were ahead of their time, I don't think they're referring to the rhythm.

My dad was there too lol. What amazing band! Obliterates any music of today.

this performance is right on target as always for genesis.
