Actually Derren's point was probably to show how powerfull misdirection can be. No matter how silly this trick might be - it shows it works on majority of people and it will be working with serious misdirection to manipulate people.

I knew mine watch has Roman numerals because that's my preferred style for a watch, lol. Knew it had a second hand. The time, meh, I was just checking the style, not the time ... good trick, though, to show that we often don't "see" what we're looking at.

This is because people only glance at a watch everyday for 1-2 seconds. This is how long are sensory memory lasts. To know your watch you would have to repeatably look at it and tell yourself what it looks like to encode it into memory.

that's so awesome! People see and recollect what they look for (the indicators on the watch but not the time) so even though they just glanced at the watch they weren't looking at the time. Awesome selective memory trick.

Didn't work on me. Here's the thing - your subconscience knows the time when you look to see if you have numbers or roman numerals. All you have to do is access that memory. If you don't know what I mean, watch the Derren video where he has a mugging faked, and then has a witness recall the smallest details.

If he asked you that question simply with no rush at all, you would probably get it right. Another thing lol, Whenever you look at your watch, you dont think to yourself, ooh it says twenty past three in roman numerals, noone really looks at the numbers or roman numerals, it just becomes a habit knowing exactly what the time is by what angle the hour and minute arms are at. Its so simple.

What he does is confuse you. He rushes this so it leaves you with no time to think properly and specific about your watch. He firstly mixes up your mind by saying some random numbers, 20 and 26000, you picture these numbers as ordinary numbers, not roman numarals, then straight after saying these two different numbers he asks you weather you know what time of number simbols you have, you dont know as your mind is messed up with the rush.

oh yeah and one more thing, he asks you what is the exact time on the face, you obviously wont know as you werent looking for the time, you were looking to see if it has roman numerals or ordinary numbers, this guy is actually very easy to suss you if you just focus. I will put my hands up to him tho, he is very talented at what he does.

well this was like when our art teacher said to us, everyone draw your own shoe. the detail of it etc without looking at it.

and we all failed. even though we put the same school shoes on everyday. it was really weird. i mean we got the general shape of it and the basics. and the we were to draw it again while having the shoe infront of us. which obviously was a better improvement. just i thought it weird most didnt even know what their own shoe looked like.

i dont wear a watch at all but hes saying is that we are so accustomed to our watches we jut forget what is even on it. Kind of like when you have ur friends # saved in you phone your dont know it by heart cuz all you have to do go to er number and send.... lol....so therefore you are oblivious to whats really on your watch .....you're oblivious to everything but the time. As far as the exact time part i dont get lmao.

It's an attention experiment - we can look at things but often we're so focused on one aspect we miss all the other things. So if you just want to know what the time is you probably won't focus on what exactly your watch looks like - thus why a lot of people don't know whether their watch has numbers, roman numerals, etc.
