you dont need coal, you can burn wood and wood planks in a furnace and you get charcole. It works exactly the same as coal would and it is sooo much esier to get. That's what i did when i first started.

Log + cobblestone furnace = (log on bottom log on top) charcoal, slightly less effiant than coal, but no less awesome, first make an axe too, get as many logs as you can not just 16 -.-
