@traindude233 - the original 6000hp SD90MAC's (4) are up for sale in Calgary. Too many problems with them. The SD90/43MAC's are still running around. One seen in this video is a SD90/43MAC
@daviddodgechallenger - it was being used as a pusher platform for backup moves down a spur. The conductor rode the caboose as protection against a few crossings on the spur.
Today, the conductor just rides the last car and communicates the engineer via radio.
Man I miss the multimark. It looked real sharp on the engines but specially on boxcars. It was a really cool logo that gave a sense of motion. CP new scheme is, well, a bit too red for me. Miss the action red too... and nose stripes... and MLWs... <<sigh>>
One day, I might just rail fan there. It looks like a great crossing!! I got a question. Do you know the tracks Renfrew Ontario, do the Railink Railroad trains go on that track, or is it the tracks that go in Casselman?
RailAmerica goes through Renfrew. That's west of Ottawa. It's along the Chalk River Subdivison. There hasn't been much traffic up there since CP choose to re-route a few trains.
Casselman is along the VIA Rail Alexandria Sub. The Montreal-Ottawa route
There were only 4 true SD90MAC's on CP with 6000hp. All have been stored in Calgary Alberta. The SD90MAC seen in my video is a 4300hp model with a 16-710G3B engine.
I thought that might be the case, because I remember people calling them SD43MAC's as well. I know Conrail's SD80MAC's have the 5,000hp motor, which I love. Thanks for your help!
No problem! CP was having alot of problems with the four true SD90MAC's and only after 9 years, stored them. I was lucky to see two of these 90MAC's on a train 5 years ago but they were stopped on the mainline after one of the engines became disabled. :o(
I work for CP ..and i was wondering...Bedell is on the winchester I believe ...I was there for a while replacing old jointed rail with welded rail for a few months ...was just wondering exactly when you filmed this ??? I Think its different standing on that adjacent track watching them pass by!!! mind you there a little bit slower but an experiance at the same time... id be interested in seeing more crews at work in some videos ...anywho ..Thanks of rthe vid!!
September 27 2008 was when I filmed this. Bedell is indeed on the Winchester Sub. Bedell was once the junction where the Prescott-Ottawa line crossed the Montreal-Smiths Falls line. I knew that CP crews were working around the area replacing jointed track with welded rail in the late summer. The work trains would sit at Bedell every so often when the crews went offduty. You must have been with the maintenance crews working the Winchester Sub in August/September?
yes i was on utility #1 Special Projects we were on the winchester sub for about 4 months...i believe from around june or july to about middle of september ...we worked from bedell up to green valley ...in the future ..itd be cool to see some of our crews at work ..i think it might help some of our families understand what it is we do for a living ...
would be very interesting ...because talking about things most people dont see seems to bore people :| ..when in fact it is very interesting !!! and i am from kingston so its cool when its so close to home !! thanks again !!!
It's too bad that the Winchester Sub isn't CTC like the Belleville Sub. Crews have to get off the trains in cold winters or bad storms in summer, lining switches along this busy mainline. OCS/ABS has it's limitations. I saw one crew getting off the train last winter to line a switch and the conductor disappeared into a snowbank! Buried up to his arms in snow.
Yep. CPR has several 'conventional' units converted into SD40-2Bs including a handful of ex NS, exx NW high-nosed SD40-2s. Never figured out why they did it though...
The ex NS, exx Southern, high-nosed SD40-2's (3244-3254) were leased from GATX in 1991 by CP. Bought in June 1992 by CP. The cabs were stripped of most appurtenances and the windows were blanked over. Renumbered by CP to 5475-5485.
I think CP just wanted to acquire as many SD40-2's as it could at that time cuz they weren't impressed with the SD50's or SD60's. They loved the SD40-2.
ive never seen an sd 90 on the cp sub between revelstoke and vancouver..ever.

Great vid, very cool. How much horsepower does a SD90MAC have? Do they have the 6,000hp motor that was meant for them? 5* rate too!

As for the ex-NS engines on CP....they're all gone.
5475, 5479, 5480, 5481 went to Brazil in 2007.
5477, 5478 sold to Progress Rail in 2005.
5483 sold to ALSTOM in 1999. Now is FURX 3049
5484 is now FURX 3048.
5476, 5482, 5485 sold to National Railway Equipment.
