I'm appalled that anyone would purposely twist the words of Piper. He doesn't teach works salvation, but neither does he teach you can be saved by a few words that a person doesn't embrace with all their hearts.

Christians do sin, the difference is that we are convicted of our sin due to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Huh??? John Piper does not promote the idea that we don't have eternal assurance. He says that simply giving an intellectual 'nod' towards God, is not fully accepting Him. Lot's of people say the sinner's prayer & walk out of the church thinking they have now avoided hell & go right on living as they did before they said the sinner's prayer. People who make a sincere committment to God now walk in the light of Christ and they know and experience it. The Holy Spirit ministers to them.

You'll then have to explain to me, what you think real repentence is. Jesus said the word "Repent". Is that not doing something? A change of one's mind is only an acknowledgement of Jesus. There is no relationship formed. Paul and Peter spent their entire ministries teaching the ways of Jesus and urging Christians to take on a Christlike life. Why do that if Jesus didn't think it was important? We cannot be persevering if we go on about our entirely sinful ways.

What does Paul tell us about our lives in I Corinithians 5:9-14? There is a standard for Christian behavior and living. Believers do fail, but those failures wound them and they seek to turn from the unrighteousness and regain a restored relationship with Christ. If you want to label that works: then call it whatever you want. Salvation is more than a few utterances from the mouth.

Jn repeatedly talks about belief for eternal life, strangely the gospel of jn NEVER mentions repentence. If u wrote a book for the express purpose of getting people saved (eternal life) and repentance was necessary - why is it not mentioned? John's other letters and Rev use the word quite frequently so he wasn't unfamiliar with the word or concept.

Note in Rev 20:11-15 that the lost are judged by books of their works BUT they are only cast into hell when they aren't found in a seperate book - the Book of Life. So my case is that we should seperate our WALK with God from the Free Gift of Salvation (Rm 5:18 or 6:23) They're not the same thing.

I simply do not believe that John Piper teaches anything that is contrary to that., He absolutely teaches perseverance of the Saints. He also knows that believers can get themselves involved in serious sin, such as adultery. All he points out at that time, is to check your RELATIONSHIP with God, not whether or not you are saved.

Perhaps we are talking apples and oranges here. Peserverence of the Saints isn't works based. Paul says God will keep us close to him and not allow anyone to snatch us out of the Savior's hand. I don't think you understand the doctrine, at least not completely. I cannot completely persevere, no human can. We're sinful even while we are saved. Piper does encourage us to check our relationship with Christ often, so that we can grow the fruit of the spirit. Nothing more.

Here is an example. If a homosexual says the sinners prayer and turns right back around and returns to living the homosexual lifestyle, did they really mean the prayer? Are they saved? Of course not. But, there are people who believe that. That's cheap grace and not the precious grace of the Savior. Those who truly repent want to please God by living Godly lives. If there is nothing inside them that wants to turn away from their sin, then they were never saved in the first place.

God has paid for all sins, while we're still enemies. He will save anyone who believs in him for it...it's not based on our behavior. It still seems like you're putting a necesary performance to occur for salvation to be true, but if works MUST follow salvation how's that diff than works must be done to BE saved?

God desires fellowship with us, and that is definitely an act of a person's will. But He has given salvation freely to us out of His love and work. If we must do anything to gain, or if anything must accompany, salvation then doesn't that negate grace as it is now based off a personal deed/choice and is therefore compensation (Rm 4:4-5)

so, believing + disobedience = death/no haven. All Christians need to believe and obey His commandments, then only be saved.

Well, at least John Piper is consistent in his theology. If you're a Calvinist, you can NEVER know whether or not you're one of the elect. If you believe it's possible to lose your salvation, you can never know if you have been good enough to stay saved. Any system that leaves room for doubt of salvation must be abandoned. There is a third way, and that is in the doctrine of eternal security.

It makes me laugh that a word like infallible could even be used within the context of Christianity. How is believing what someone else tells you, with no physical evidence to support it, supposed to give someone an infallible comfort that they are saved? Statistically speaking, its pretty unlikely that you even heard the right message, or that the message you heard has any basis in life or any supposed afterlife. I am referring to the fact that there are thousands of supposed "true" religions.

it's good that you recognized that this was close to being false, but I think that you got the wrong message.

Piper is writing to people who struggle with desiring God. As sinful humans we face times when our flesh and Satan tell us that we are beyond grace and we believe it. He is extremely clear about God's faithfulness to the elect. As humans we are not God, we can't guarantee anything, we are in the hands of a Sovereign God, that is why we live by faith- we trust all the promises of God.

Clarification- we can guarantee that a book is a book, that a tree is a tree, and that a rock is rock, but with our faith- it is all based on God. We don't make the rules- faith is being sure of what hope for and certain of what we do not see. We cannot control what God has called us to put faith in...and I think in this way we struggle with our assurance of salvation- we lose hope that God is real, we lose hope that he loves us! Because we are sinful humans it is in our nature to never be sure

I encourage you to read the parables: the virgins and their oil, esp. the five who had oil, but ran out, and the wheat and the tares, particularly the seeds that actually came to life, they germinated, they were made alive, but later died, for they had no root. Salvation can't be lost? Read Rev. Ch 22 vs 18 & 19, and yes there are other scriptures indicating salvation can be lost. If you believe you will do what the bible says, if you don't, you won't.

If you check out our friend here's YouTube page, you'll see he has a rather profound reaction against "Doubting Calvinists". Fair enough. His theology seems pretty sound: Christ is all we need for salvation, there is nothing more. Check.

What particularly bothers me is that I have listened to John's lectures & sermons and I have NEVER heard him propose that ANYTHING other than Christ, and Christ alone. So, I think this is a misrepresentation based on some scant evidence.

He spoke at a christian conference in Northern Ireland last year and i quote, 'I believe in eternal security with all my might. Those who are justified WILL be glorified'. Read 'Pierced by the Word', chapter 31- 'Helping People Have the Assurance of Salvation'.12 verses explained on how we can KNOW of salvation. Also, as Calvinist, Piper holds fast to security. Dont just read one sentence in a sermon
