The guy has bad singing technique, look at the way he grimaces when he sings. Singing raspy wears out the vocal cords and the older you get the harder it is to do that.
He can still sing, he just needs to adjust his style. Look at Chris Cornell, he adjusted his style and still sings great.

haha there's no aging to it... you try singing Hemorrhage, Bad Day, Shimmer, Innocent, etc... over 200+ times a year for 5 years and see if you can still do it... once he quit singing it "set" his vocal cords and they'll always be the way they are now.. it sucks but that's how it goes.. he'll never sounds the same.. like I said he's lost the upper range of his voice.. props to Brett for doing what he loves but he'll never sound the same!
It is a matter of technique. I am a trained vocal instructor and if Brett was smart, he would lower the keys of the songs and sing them cleaner and he would do fine. Singing raspy if it is not natural (manufacturing a tone) is very damaging but all damage can be reversed with proper technique.
I'm glad he's back singing again but it's apparent that he's lost most of the upper range of his voice.. not saying he's a bad singer.. just saying that it's very hard for him to hit the higher tones in songs such as Bad Day and Hemmorage.

I saw them on 10/1 and they nailed it!!! They sounded awesome. Best of all they looked liked they had fun. The new Fuel may have Carl's great song writing but it doesn't have Brett's voice and passion.
fuel is incomplete without kevin and carl man...again a half band....they are half dead....even though i love them all...they are sick since their split....
lol I dont hvae to watch what I say. It was a long time ago and something I don't remember correctly but I thought that Kevin was in Fuel when Toryn first started but now that you mention it I guess he wasn't. Last I heard of Kevin he was involved in some kind of lawsuit with the band
