  • Good video! I'm still swimming through the sea of confusion here but I can see that this video sheds some light on it. I just need to watch it a few more times to get my head wrapped around it.

  • I think you are doing a great job. I am Thai but still Learning too . Well ,it is good to be able to learn from you .Only some times you couldnt pronouce some of the letters.

    jam

  • Didn't get it... T_T

  • Thank you so much for this (and the others) video! You're the best!

  • Thanks so much for this video! Really helps to clarify the rules a lot.

  • this is super confusing language.

  • Waaaa help me So hard

  • ใครขายไข่ไก่=who's seling chicken eggs. :D

  • This was such a good explanation of Thai consonant types and groupings!

  • You know , this is hard for me too. Even I'm Thai.

  • คนไทยคิดว่าภาษาอื่นออกเสียงยาก... ผมว่าภาษาไทยเนี่ยแหละออกเสียงยากที่สุดแล้วครับสำหรับคนชาติอื่น 555+

  • Such a clear and well explained video thanks

  • The Thai's have one hell of an alphabet huh? LoL.

  • The explanation of why the consonants are grouped the way they are ("what part of the mouth is used") is a very helpful piece of information on the alphabet background. Thank you! The class of the consonant as I understand is needed to make it possible to write down tones along with sounds, however why are there multiple consonants that make the same sound (or do they?) and are of the same class, for example 5th 6th and 7th consonant in the alphabet? Thanks!

  • Answering to myself:

"..if two or more consonant sounds can be written with consonant letters belonging to the same class, a conflict arises. In such a case the choice of consonant letter is determined solely by the dictates of the rules of correct spelling" (C) THE THAI SYSTEM OF WRITING by Mary R. Haas

  • However it doesn't answer why this is the way it is, why there are multiple consonants of the same class producing the same sound....

  • To answer your question we have to touch on the history of the writting system. When the Thais (or Siamnese if you will) borrowed words from other languages (Khmer, Pali, Sanskrit, etc), we borrowed/invented new letters to represent these new sounds as well.

  • For example ธ used to be pronounced [θ], ฑ was [ð], therefore it didn't clash with ท [t] but after a while these sounds (or phonemes) merged with each other, but the spelling hasnt changed (much). so we ended up with lots of homophones.

  • @LingNaiMueng Thanks for the explanation!

  • very close to native thai. I thought you try very hard. very nice indeed I really admire you.

    PS. ญวน อ่านว่า ยวน ไม่ใช่ ย้วน ครับ

  • Thank You!

I thought I was reading Thai fluently, but I still have some stuff to work on!

    It is a great language.

  • I think "ห" is very tricky. When I first started writing I tried to spell every word with "ห" not knowing it was more like a vowel. Meet my good friend "ฮ"้haha

  • Thai language has too many characters, but Laotian is alot easier because Lao language has less characters than Thai.

  • @PookieIsYourBoo

I agree that Thai has too many characters. It could be simplified

    like Laos!!!!

  • LOL I remember going through all the alphabet and vowel untill 4th grade? It was dam hard

Don't worry if you just learning, I'm 20 I still can't remember the tone and I used it everyday lol

    ไก่ จิก เด็ก ตาย บน ปาก โอ่ง จำได้อันเดียว xD

  • Thanks so much for your videos. You're so clear and easy to understand.

  • one hour a day untill your fluent, or 30 min a day...you can do it! pick one area of the lanuage 1st then the other. Alphabet consanants 1st....then vowels...then togather.... step by step you can over come the INNER fear, and the OBVIOUS over whelm. speaking try tourist informations first...master that info, then try your next level info, master that info DAILY, short spurts, music occasionaly and one Thia movie weekly, plus dont worry when training or its not effective or fun. Blessings!

  • The tone representation at 7:30 (the word on the right) is wrong. It should show a falling tone, not rising.

Thanks for the videos, btw... I love them!

  • Naa is falling, both pronounced and spelled. Transliteration is never to be taken seriously.

  • Thai alphabet, Thai vowels and Thai numerals are all Khmer's. I hate when Thais never mention the word Khmer in Thai culture.

  • @DangersMines

How did you know that !!!???

I'm Thai and I'm know that it develop from Khmer.

The Teacher teach me in my Thai first class and every Thai People know this.
