Hey mate, Nice vid. I'm interested in getting away with the family and heading inland to do some prospecting. For me the attitude has always been to get the best equipment to start with, say with prospecting the GPX5000, but is it really necessary? I'm going to be chasing gold and I'm happy to pay whatever it takes to give me the best chance of finding something, what are your thoughts?
It may not sound particularly deep but I tend to get about 10 inches max with with the 10x5" DD HF coil + slightly shallower on highly mineralized ground. In theory, it can go a little deeper. The little 6" coil give me more depth, as does the 9" Concentric coil which goes about 14" deep.
You mention that the coils are high frequency yet the guys in WA use the big ML detectors, the 3500-5000 and their success is based on low frequency detection. Your success speaks for itself, but I am curious about that difference. Fantastic vid. I would have problems concentrating on gold with all of those glorious herps around.
@WinnipegBeardieBubba - Yes, I would. It's a great compromise against the GPXs but you'll loose the depth advantage of those PI machines plus the VLF's like the X-Terra 70/705 are always a little noisier on the mineralized ground of the goldfields.
Fantastic video, I was last In the "Land Down Under" looking for herps. We were in NT though. It would be hard to focus in your area, gold, herps, gold, herps. Especially flipping tin. I have watched videos from some of your countrymen zaqqaz22, and I got the impression that low frequency detectors (although very specialized) were the best for nugget detecting. Are you demonstrating the flexibilty if the x-terra 70? Clearly the minelab (if you truely know how to use it) is the gold standard.
Hi, im a New Detectorist from UK, i Love my X-Terra 70, Fantastic machine, i'm hoping to find my 1st gold ring this spring. Great vid in a Beautiful Country, HH Guys. Jay UK
awesome video! how much money have you guys made prospecting? im 20, turning 21 soon, and i would LOVe to do this. i love the outdoors.(but i like gold just as much as well!)
I´ve read on a forum now that it is only legal to use metal detecting on the beach (if the beach is not close to a archeological site). But that seems to be it. Any archeological finds must be given to the proper authorities. But the greek policeforce has alot of corruption and they could confiscate ones metaldetector just to get it for themselves. (Im halfgreek and I´ve been to Greece 10+ times so Im not a racist).
You'll find all sorts of ancient relics in your homeland although Greece and Turkey have restrictions on using metal detectors so contact a local authority there before importing one.
G'day mate i just watched your video i found it very interesting as its about the same places ive been and love looking at the reptiles i use a minelab 15000 haven't quite found any thing much out at that way been to sofala , wattle flat , Hillend found an old wedge they used for splitting rock.
May be one day and its all about getting out there and haveing fun .
You should know by now that no Prospector worth his salt will tell you exactly where he digs his gold. Right? As such, I assumed your comment was simply an open statement and not an actual question.
I know if about a half dozen Diggers who mentioned the area they were working (on Private Property no less) to people asking... and returned to find themselves barred from future entry after people tore up the ground at night... after fence-jumping.
I like your editing skills, you should work as a rep salesman for minelab. can you make another video something with more nuggets, dont get me wrong I love the wildlife out there in the outback on this video, mybe a video deminstrating were to hunt. flood plains, bedrock, creek, hillsides, drainages, ect.
I'm doing a book on these things as there's a demand for a publication showing maps and techniques. There's probably no real need for me to make a "How To" video on finding nuggets etc as there's a number of those type of videos currently available out there. I like the critters and I enjoy Prospecting and Detecting so this was sort of a compilation tape of all the fun stuff that I had sitting around on the computer.
I noticed you were nugget shooting using the 6 inch coil but you were in the coin mode...wouldnt you want to be using the prospecting mode for gold? Were you in the coin mode just to try and discriminate what kind of metal it was after you located it in the prospect mode? great video BTW, I LOVED it!
Yes, that is correct. Prospecting Mode is certainly more sensitive and goes deeper, but by switching to Coin/Relic mode, you can get a better idea of what you are about to dig by using the inbuilt discrimination features. If hunting in shallow ground, you can work in Coin/Relic mode and use the numbers to see what your target might be. Otherwise, I always hunt in Prospecting Mode for better sensitivity.
The target in the creek (assuming it's the one I think you are referring to) was about 4 bits (tiny nuggets) of Gold that were clumped together and were each about the size of a grain of rice.
It's a VERY good detector. It's also very versatile with the many optional coils available. It's best used as an "all rounder" for beaches, coins and relics as well as occasional Prospecting. But if you find that you want to do a LOT of dedicated Prospecting for Gold nuggets, it might be better to look at a more dedicated Gold detector like the Minelab Eureka or an SD/GP/GPX detector.
I live in the northeastern part of the US as far as prospecting is concerned we have very very high mineralization in the soil but yet some very nice gold. what would be the best setting and coil set up in your opinion?
Well, we Aussies are unfortunately 'blessed' with some of the very worst of the world's mineralized soils. Only a DD coil can handle it. Use Prospecting Mode PLUS Beach Mode for the best stability. Ground Tracking = ON. Best coil combination is the Elliptical DD HF coil. It handles the minerals in the first 9 inches pretty good... a good secondary coil is the little 6" DD HF coil... but ONLY for creeks & shallow soil areas. That 6" coil is too sensitive to minerals in deeper soil though.
Ive seen others dig targets (coins etc) at unusual depths with the X-Terra 70 - such as 17" & 22" in beach sand. Moist soil is rumored to increase the depth of the detector so recent rain is often a good thing. I dug the head of a small 1800's pick axe at almost two feet. Metal was 12" long. Most gold is VERY faint (audio-wise) until you scrape away the top layer of soil and rescan. The topsoil contains minerals and runoff so it pays to scrape it off and rescan.
I didn't have a GPX-4500 when this video was made. Only the X-Terra 70. The nuggets found with the X-Terra were featured here in this video HOWEVER the video montage showing different TYPES of nuggets featured some examples of nuggets found by others - I included them to show the types of Gold nuggets (specimens in quartz, ironstone nuggets etc) which Prospectors may find. The 'secret' for the X-Terra 70 is to hunt shallower soils where possible... and listen for fainter targets.
Wow, this movie was made so well, it's like any other professional movie out there. Congratulations!

Would u suggest this one if someone cant get a Minelabe 4500 or Minelabe 5000
What type of Coil would u suggest if looking for gold in creeks and feilds.

@ABlackDogProductions You can but dont do so in highly iron-polluted area's or you'll be digging all day long hehe

what is the difference between x-terra 70 and x-terra 705?
mfgunit 2 years ago
705 has a backlit screen so you can see the numbers when its dark outside. And I heard it has a bigger coil than the 70.
