  • i didnt know they get that big

  • i got one of those in my tank and i let it grow for 2 yrs and now when i put in anything with it it eats it :/ ........ it killed two babe oscars and then i bought a full grown on to teach it a lesson and when i went to check on em the next day the jack was eatin the oscar. i dont know what to do because JACKS WONT TAKE THE DAMN THING PLZZ HELP OR SEND ME A MESSAGE IF U want it...good luck its 11inches :(

  • @MegaRyan4444 i want it

  • @MegaRyan4444 Get rid of your JD, get a baby JD and a couple Baby oscars, and whatever else you want with it as a baby... i had to do that with my oscars because they killed anything i tried putting in there. Including my hand. so i got rid of them and got all the fish i wanted as a baby including oscars and JD... good luck

  • would you add a jack dempsey to a African tank, check mine out n let me no what you think about adding a dempsy to it

  • Jd are tough bastards mines beat the shit out of my oscars which were bigger

  • hahahaha it looks so chubby

  • perfect JD

i laughed cause i have the exact same cave in my tank. they love that shelter. good stuff man, very good looking fish

  • do u recon my 220 litre tank would be ok for just 1 jack d

  • @fishlover2011 that would be just fine. The minimum is a 208l.

  • i like female jack dimpsey more than males because i think males have a little bit to much color

  • cool check out mine comment, rate and sub and ill do the same

  • One of my favorite cichlids, tiz a shame I don't have the room to keep one.

  • hey, love the dempsey, very pretty, the iridescent is too. I have both. will you do me a favor and check out a vid of my dempsey and tell me if urs looked like mine when it was little? i love the crazy bright scales, but so far mine doesn't have them all over :/

  • how old is the irr shark?

  • very nice aquarium man beautiful fish

  • I miss my JD, raised him from under an inch, now my exwife wants to give him up with my tank for $100 and a gang of other fish smh..... That tank is worth over $1000! That is a pretty boy!

  • That isnt scratching. The fish hitting its head against the rock is the fish challenging other fish. it is a sign of dominence. My JD hits the heater as it hits the glass and scares other fish :D

  • hey i have a jack dempsy about the same size if not bigger and i have a 50gallon tank i want to set up i just wanna no how should i set it up what size filter and heater because my uncle had a big 50 gall and had his fish in a 20 gallon the same size dempsy you have and he went to put him in a 50 gallon tank and his fish died one day after being in the tank i dont want that to happen to my dempsy so any advice lol you guys seem to no about them alot anyone plz???

  • Can some one tell me when my jack dempsey will mature hes 4.5-5 inches i really want to see him mature

  • Still have the jack and its 3 inches now and growing fast thanks .Yes will keep it and just see how it gos hopefully my 3 foot tanks will be ok for now

  • ok so i am going to have to get a larger tank .Plus have a ehiem filter cleaning the tank may have to take him back when he or she gets bigger

  • ok so i am going to have to get a larger tank or take it back to the pet store

  • Wow that paroon shark is massive.. Nice jacks.

  • get an ahli for the colours... i hate the face of jd fish cause it becomes too fatty...

  • hey nice fish was wondering if you could help me figure out if my jack dempsey is a male or female can u look at my video please and thank you i wld appricaite it

  • my jack ate every other fish in the tank how is it yours gets along with other fish

  • you've got too big of fish for your tank, they can hardly turn around!!.

And your Jack Dempsey was flashing onto the gravel.. ill or stressed.

  • @wholeshow All cichlids do this when they are healthy and happy, especially with the opposite sex in with them.

  • nice fish i have one too. :D

  • Best JD I've ever seen!

  • 0:17 What fish is tht??

  • jack Dempseys are by far the best Cichlids EVER!

  • Nice fish! Have they mated with each other yet

  • Nice colors

  • wow he is so perfect

  • I feed my JD goldfish all the time that's all I feed them

  • pitbull0592 for your question once your jd is 3" start feeding it red minnows ur jack dempsey should grow real quickly but make the minnows a snake or mayb like 3 times a week cus live fish can give ur fish parasites i recently lost my 240 south american cichlid tank do to feeding live fish so just be careful n a nother way is to have a larger they grow faster in larger tanks

  • Coool. I want a Jack Dempsey

  • My JD always hides in the back of my aquarium what do i do?

  • Hey, well i have a JD also, she's about 2 inches right now. I have her on a diet of nightcrawlers and cichled pellets(hikari gold). She's still afraid of me though any way of getting her less shy because she has lots of cover but she always hides. Any estimate on how many months it would take her to reach 5 inches.

  • @pitbull0592 i got a female jack around the end of june she was around 2" also and now its the end of december and shes around 4" i also got a male at the same day and size and right now he is around 6-7" i feed them hikari gold pellets and about every 3-4 days a little brine shrimp and blood worms which they also share with my 7" oscar a 3" convict and 5" jewel this is just a little about my fish

  • beautifullllll fish.

  • i use to have a dempsey but was gettng to big and started killing my loaches and other cichlids in the tank.. yeah he was a dick

  • @jrgong94 My Jack Demsey is nicknamed DickHead...lol He picks on my Oscars, I can't wait for one to knock the hell out of him one day. I don't want them to hurt him, just put him in his place.

  • Is the JD a male or female? Mine looks the exact same but only about 8" and I still havent figured out if it's a male or female haha.

  • @JGS187 Thats a male.

  • Mines is larger than this one I think but I'm just going off what I can say and the guy putting the oscar and jack with the tetras that is not a good idea one jack dempsey alone by itself need way bigger tank and they will eat ur tetra the may not have yet but they will

  • how big of a tank is that

  • OMGGGGG, mine are small compared to yours!!!! i thought mine were full grown jack dempsies lol

  • Had a Beautiful Jack. Had Him for Close To Ten Years. His Name was GEORGE. GREAT little guy. Miss George.

  • how big is that bitch

  • Hi guys. Last night I went and got some new fish and a new tank. A 25 gallon tank. I bought 2 red oscars. 2 jack dempseys. And I already had 3 white tetras. I'm just wondering how fast Red Oscars grow, same with Jack Dempseys.

    Thanks

  • @kingJosh2009 they aren't in the 25 gallon tank are they?

  • Really beautiful Jack Dempseys and Pangasias catfish!

  • how big is/was that beuty?

  • nice jacks mine never bred either my male just kicked my females ass all the time. i got jaguars now check out my vids

  • That's a really pretty fish. Do you think it would go well in a 55 gallon tank?

  • i have a jd that is 10 years old got him when i was 5 and he gets a pond with koi and an Oscar

  • wow

  • can someone please tell me if i can put one of these in an 18' inch by 40" inch if so how many

i obviously know nothing about this fish except for that its aggresive.

  • Im getting worried. I just put a small jack dempsey in my tank today. He is probably no bigger than 2 inches. I have two other fish in my tank, a pacu, and a huge bala shark, and they are WAY bigger than him, yet the cichlid is still constantly going after them and atacking them, and they arent even coming close to his territory, he is just chasing after them. What should i do?

  • muy buen ejemplar. congratulations

  • i think i need help-- I just got a jack dempsy and my turtles ate it... whay would they do that? i mean, he was about 12 inches long and i dont know what to do....

  • both males

  • I keep getting conflicting information.. are jack dempseys from central or south america? or both?

  • can one jack dempsey be alone in a 35 gallon tank for his whole life

  • 55 gallons is almost to small for an adult Dempsey. If 35 gallons is what you have to work with I'd suggest Convicts or African Cichlids. I have one adult in a 55 gallon and he's almost to big for it

  • HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET THAT BIGG

  • oioioi i see flicking!!!

  • Beautiful... How big???

  • daaaayum how did it get so big?

  • i have one jack in a 10 gallon tank and my wife hates the fish, says it gives her the creeps because he follows you. awesome fish though

  • The jack is following you begging for a bigger tank. Seriously, who puts a fish that will grow 8 to 10 inches in a 10 gallon. You are awesome

  • @RELLIK41982 its a 90

  • nice!

  • can,t wait till mine is that size. how big is he.

  • nice Jack how old is he ? Mine guy is has alot of color as well check him out.....

  • what was the other fish beside the jack dempsey

  • did u get that last comment i hope

  • yeah he did allright, it was from some feeders i bought from meijer. BIG mistake. never again. i had to do endless water changes to get all the parasites out. but jack is no longer scratching. so i think alls good.

  • I like your Dempsey how old?

  • the fish has parasites its sick

  • Correct MrNarutofan11 If constant

  • wow, you make me wanna get blue rocks for my tank. my jack does the exact same shit, rub up against the rocks to scratch himself, i presume! lol

  • Urs might have parasites uleavemecold

  • Nice fish. The scratching is not good. Sign of infection. Help him sooner than later.

  • Lots of leftover food, or not cleaning properly. You got planaria problems. Not harmful to fish but annoys da heck out of them. Use coppersafe

  • Mate, what is that movement they do, at 0:33? My Jack Dempsey (Full Grown, about 3 years old in a 55 gallon) spends a lot of time attempted to rub himself along the substrate, haven't had time too look up what the behavior is, but could you tell me if you know?

  • Sometimes they are just scratching like a person would, but especially if repeated often it can mean they have parasites.

  • ya they have parasites in there scales that annoy them , infact thats why sailfish and marlin jump so much is because of the same reason

  • Also if they shake like something is bothering them

  • Your jack dempsey was scratching..that's a sign of "ich" it's a disease that alot of fish get...you better treat it, if you still have him.

  • No its not. Its a sign of access slime coat. Water changes usually clears this up. A sign of ick would be little white crystals forming on the body or fins. And sometimes fish scratch just to do it. There dosn't always have to be a reason.

  • Comment removed

  • @smartass2st Agreed! Ich is very clearly recognized on the scales. It looks like they are covered in salt. If he continues repeatedly then there is a problem but like people scratch so do fish. Doesn't always mean they are sick. I've been keeping fish for 30 years. Good rule is to always check each fish daily for any signs of illness like markings, pulled back fins, listlessness etc... He looks great!

  • @pipperoooo is a 3foot to small for 1 jack dempsey

  • @jjamoako Nah. I don't think so. How big is he now? Do you still have him? Bigger is always better of course but it depends on your filtration, water changing etc One of the BEST investments I ever made was in a canister filter with a Micron cartridge. It really polishes the water nice and keeps the algae particles out. I also use sand in my tank. Cichlids, as you probably know, love to pick at the substrate. My cichlids literally "filter" the sand through their gills. I have the cleanest tank.

  • wow thats a pretty jd how big is it

  • nice lookinn jack i just put blue rocks in my tank and it makes mine look way better

  • i miss my j.d. :( he was 10.5 inches and caught bloat :'(

  • SEXY FISH

  • Comment removed

  • how long did it take him to get that big and colorful

  • im jd eats everthing i put in my tank from lobsters, to sucker fishes, to other cichlids. Does anyone know the life span of these fish?

  • 8-10 years

  • Nice JD!

  • pretty

  • i am having a problem with 1 of my 2 JD's i bought them at the same time and roughly the same size but one of them is getting larger and the other is still just as big when i got him and there is no sign of bullying so if you can PLZZZ HELP!!!

  • Well one of them is probobly a female and the male likes her!

  • sometimes just being around a bigger fish can stress the smaller one out, another possibility is that the bigger one already established dominance, the dominate ones usually grow faster, i had two buttikoferi tilapias in one tank that i got at the same time and they really liked each other, but one was still 3 inches while the other one was 5.5, i seperated them and the smaller one went through a growth spurt, try seperating for a bit

  • hi i wondered if u could help me.. im having trouble with my dempsey.. weve had him a yr with the same fish.. we added some plants to the water and he's got the hump!! hes been off his food for about 4 wks, he looks healthy still and his colours are still bright!! i caught him eating fish eggs the other day but he will not eat his usual food..he just shakes his head when u put it in???

  • how long did your jack take to get that big, mines about 7-8 inches but doesnt look nearly that big especially in the face. Also I bought my jacks at about the same time and the one is still only about 4 inches, why is the one so much bigger?

  • how long did it take for ur jack to get 7-8 inches big?

the other ones smaller because it gets bullied, its a combo of not eating enough and stress.

  • Then why would they stay in the same cave, the little one seems like I see him eat more than the big one, especially when feeders are in the tank. Is it possible they are opposite sex do jacks even pair off?

  • my jd is like 6 or 7 inches and all he does is sit at the bottom and swim really slow..but when i feed my fish he rushes to the top..idk hes weird.i hope its not sick

  • do they eat feeders?

  • yes actually it depends are you ready for spawning if not nen no but if so get dividers and ten galln tanks with sponge filters and sell the little ones when a inch long might me long but its worth the wait!

  • could i have 2 firemouths, 2 convicts, and a jd in a 55 gallon for life?

it has good filtration and i do 25% water changes weekly.

  • 1 fire mouth and 1 convict and 1 jd then yes

  • Yeah they are nice jacks. Are they a breeding pair?

  • They were sold together I believe - I inherited them from a friend - and I didn't know they were male + female at first. They never mated (or successfully if so) that I knew of, but they did seem to get along well.

  • they are beautiful fish. they must be a real conversation piece when you have guests.

  • Canadians are awesome. Also: Your comments are being downvoted, marked as spam and you've been blocked. Thanks for playing!

  • sorry i had to have this fight on ur front porch man

  • I've never had a fight break out in comments like that before, mildly amusing. However, a mess to have to clean up. ;)

  • nice jacks! Its also cool that you are able to keep plants with them. I would do that if mine didn't eat them or dig them out.

  • I had this problem too, but I weighed the plants down at the bottom (lead etc. wrapped around a bit of foam), and I kept putting things back whenever the fish uprooted the plants. After a while, I think they eventually gave up and let the plants be.

  • how fuckin big is that monster i got one its about 6x the size of when i got it but way smaller than that

  • i got a baby jack dempsey is a little bitt bigger but how many i got to waitt to get that long please reply

  • wow i have to agree this is an amzing jack dempsey i give you props

  • wow thats one of the best looking male jack dempseys i have ever seen

  • jsut got my jack dempsey and convict happy lol

  • I like green terrors better because they're better looking(to me) and they have more personality.

  • very pretty fish. I just got a teeny baby Jack Dempsey tonight. I hope I am able to grow him out to be as handsome as yours. :)

  • keep him in a tank by himself. if u do that then he will feel dominant and his colors will really come out nicely contenderpressure.

  • i have 2 JDs one is more colorful then the other why is that? its not too colorful but its only like 2.5 inches..will it get like this one?

  • 2 probable reasons. the other one is not mature yet so his adult colors arent coming out. or the colorful one is the dominant one and the other one is supressing his colors because if he starts flashing them then that would be like challenging the other. put the dull colored one in a tank by himself and he should start showing colors.

  • dude is it true that paroon sharks need a 300 galolon tank minimum i'm not familiar with sharks

  • Wow. they are heaps cool! I had a beautiful juvenile JD once, although he only last 12 hours in the tank with my massive Fene - as I wasn't quite aware that he was slowly killing him! It was a hard lesson to learn. Beautiful tank you have!

  • hey, i have a jack dempsey too. its about 5 inches long and in a 10 gallon tank. i have it for about 3 years already. when i first had it. it was only about an inch big and it stops growing now. i feed him the Aquarian brand cichlid pellet food. Can anyone please tell me what i should do to let it grow more? is it the size of the tank or the food? please help if anyone can give me some suggestions thanks a lot

  • its in a 10 gallon tank? get a 20 Long, itll skyrocket haha.

  • yeah you need much a bigger tank. Also you can try feeding him a more live food diet. I suggest things that are high in protein (krill, earthworms bloobworms maybe, crickets) hope this helps and ood luck!

  • they also like plant and veggies and plankton once u get them to accociate it as food they sre really smart fish

  • the food is the last thing of your problem...true is all cichilds should have a min. of 55 gallon, your may not grow any larger then that because of 3 years of limited tank space, the fish growth my have been shorten...give a 55 a try and see what happens

  • it's definitly the size of the tank. Put him in a 30 gal if you only have one. He'll get pretty big really quick. if you don't there is a possibility that he'll grow abnormally or get disfigured.

  • wow you obviously need to learn about cichlids!!! get a 55 gallon minimum for 1 jack dempsey

  • how big was your paroon/ irredescent shark compared to the jackdempsey cichlids when you mixed them? i think i might get 1.

  • Which would be better for my 55g tank a Green Terror or a Jack Dempsey?

  • most deffinatly a jack dempsey. other than oscars, i think they have the most personality and are very beutiful.

  • Ok thanks.

  • It's up to you. Jack Dempsey are generally more skittish than Green Terrors. Both have alot of personality. You should really see a Full Grown male green terror. They are very interactive much in the same way as Red Devils are.

  • nice setup

  • I love pangassius!!!

  • i got my JD for 9 bucks and it was a juvi. an adult should cost you about 12 bucks. unless it is an electric blue JD. those are expensive but are a buety. it took my JD about a year to get full grown from a juvinile. What fish do you have with your JD?

I was thinking about getting a companion other than the pleco for my JD.

  • thats a nice jack!

  • how do you know if a jackdempsey is a male or female??

  • Since young, males have more color than females. And when adults, male's head grown up a little. Sorry my bad english, i'm a brazilian girl.

  • Beautiful Jack Dempsey fish! I still have a juvi in my tank. How long did it take for him to get to be that size? I love the fact that the tank also has blue gravel. It emphasizes the Dempsey's scales

  • a local pet store is selling a jack just like urs. adult very colorful for 89 bucks. that too much for a male large jack?

  • nice jd, looks just like mine...mine is really mean already killed 2 plecos 2 gold severums 3 green severums...i luv it tho

  • mine only gre to 7 inches why?

  • is it a female?

  • They grow anywhere from 6-12 inches.

  • my jd scratches all the time. like someone said before, maybe my temp is to high. it's summer time and i disconnected my heater and my temp is about 80 degrees. mine is about 7 1/2 inches. about 1 1/2 years old. Is that concidered full grown already. I keep him with a pleco in a 55 gallon. The pleco is about 5 inches.

  • I just got A 2" JD and a 2" Texas cichlid today. Beuatiful fish.

  • hey i just got 2 jd's today to p.s. what does cichlid mean???

  • cichlid is the family of fish that jd's belong to. oscars are cichlids, firemouths are cichlids, etc...

  • I have cooked my oscars and made a very good fish samwwitch. cost to much to feed them

  • Thought i'd drop by again and just mention i've finally found some JD's i na shop. Rare coour morph or Electric Blue too, i'm thrilled.

£24.50 each though, yikes. Bought a male and female, only 1.5inches in length currently. Simply stunning little fella's, so inquisitive. Simply adore them =D

  • i have 2 jds ; 2 convicts & 2 green terrors in the same tank. they get along really well, mostly keep to themselves, theres only issues when the convicts are protecting their eggs, jds are the tamest in my tank, very bizarre i was expecting them to be the enforcers ! anyways, beautiful jd in the video. love the colours

  • if iwere u i would use a black gravel substrate and sell the shark they get real big

  • I used to have Jack Dempseys. Very colorful, but they would kill everything and uproot everything in the tank. They were a real pain in the ass.
