I would disagree.. maybe not power house but I've seen other showcases from ILHC.. and they had more to offer. Again. I'm not bad mouthing them, just stating my opinion.
@brooklynsweb This isn't, and wasn't meant to be a "power-house routine". It's a tribute to the history of the dance, emphasizing popular bits of routines. The amount of thought that went in to this is staggering, and should really be be recognizable to anyone who's been in the scene for more than a couple years.
Karen wrote an excellent series of posts about the routine here:
As entertainment, this routine was pretty funny and crowd-moving, but with respect to skill-set, aerials, and energy it, was surprisingly stale. All I saw was a lot of pauses, poses, and hands flailing.
Now mind you I speak as relatively new dancer (4-5 years swing+blues), and this is my reaction as a viewer and not as a judge. But in my opinion performances from the likes of Max and Annie, Peter Strom, Evita Arse and other Swing juggernauts have much more detailed power-house routines...
@brooklynsweb To add to what aphexplotz wrote, keep in mind that showcase is changing. it used to be about a lot of aerials and big movements, but it is now becoming more story centric as well. a good story doesn't need eye popping movements. When I watch Max and Annie, yeah their fast stuff is awesome, but it is when they slow it down and show how connected they are with the music that truly shows their genius. Something we have lost is the love of the slow jam. Not blues, but slow lindy.
Brilliant. Out of curiosity I checked the judges' scores, and by how I understand the relative placement scoring rules they should have finished 3rd... did they get DQ'ed or something?
@PatrickAndNatasha That's too bad, but I guess rules wouldn't be rules if they didn't mean anything (Not that I would withhold 3rd from you, I loved the spirit of your dance).
The one thing we need? Reaction shots from the judging panel (specifically Sylvia, Steven, and Nick), as well as Skye, Todd, Jo, Andy, Nina, Alex, Peter, Kevin, Carla, Naomi, Ria, Max, and Annie, and everyone else involved in a bit they borrowed from.
I think you can see Annie and Max in the upper right, along with Sharon (?). Max looks like he's intensely focused on preparing for his routine, but the hat trick bit @4:37 did get a reaction from him.
This is insanely funny! You have to have been a Lindy Hopper for about ten years to really "get it"! My only disappointment was that they left out the classic "Back Tag" move... Shoulda' been right in there with the pretzel. LOL!
Beyond amazing, I was watching that before performing and usually I try to concentrate so I don't really watch the couples before me, but I couldn't stop myself but watch and be amazed. It put a smile on my face and I'M sure it helped me perform well my own routine. Thanks! You guys ROCK (well... you know what I mean!) ;)
@MrAwesomer can you post it somewhere else? I recognized most of the references, but there were a few that I didn't know, and I'd love to see the originals! :)
