Pete Riley is a great drum teacher and makes good vids.
I think the comment about left handedness is neither leftist nor hating - it is just a bit weird watching a left handed player play something and sometimes it is hard to follow.
There are of course left handed drummers after instruction, for who it must be a positive.
It is easy enough to flip a picture - I wonder if it is practical to include an image reversal feature on the video?
Whenever I hear other drummers playing Stewart's parts, no matter how good they are, none of them come close to copying his feel! I can tell the guy in this video is great... better than I'll ever be... but when I hear him play the chorus to Roxanne, it just doesn't have the same drive than when Stewart plays it. I'm surprised not to hear more professional drummers talk about Stewart's APPROACH to playing, instead of just his parts. Anyone agree?
It's actually not a reggae influence you are hearing in Copelands drumming... It's a jewish ethnic influence.
If I didn't hear him say it himself in an interview, I wouldn't believe it either tho. He couldn't even name a single reggae drummer that he liked... He talked about Ginger Baker and the rock greats, and then the Jewish music he grew up with. Look it up! It'll blow your mind
lots of drummers just make noise. what he means to say is, copeland uses the tones of the drums themselves in a context instead of just beating at them vigorously.
Stewart Copeland its the Eddie Van Halen for the Drums!; listen his solo albums, specialy Francis Ford Coppola's Rumble Fish, and The Rhythmatist album!.
Btw in minute 2:20, its a fart or something like that?
dude I used to think that guys like colaiuta, weckl, chambers other players like that were way better but Stewart copeland is so tight and he just drives the music.
DVD is good I agree, but a left-handed drum tutor??? Actually this really does me in. When he says RLRR does he mean that for a LH drummer? so should it be LRLL for a right-handed drummer? I've watched the whole DVD and I am at various points confused. I think Riley is a greta drummer and tutor but is a very poor choice for an instruction DVD.
Although Pete is a left handed player, he teaches from the perspective of a more common right handed player, so rudiments and stickings explained will relate to a right handed player.
I so totally have to agree. I've got Riley's Technical difficulties DVD, he's a very fine drummer, but as he tries to demonstrate 'Copeland' he has no zip, no punch, no pulse. I don't mean to knock him in a mindless way, and I think you will learn tons from the DVD, but Riley just doesn't capture the essence of Copeland's demolishing way of playing
Its obviously that you dont know nothing about this drummer...stevart is awesome, but this guy is PERFECT ALL-AROUND DRUMMER,he can play jazz as good as latin and latin music, and he has such a great technique and chops and makes best drum clinics I ever seen...I dont say that copeland is bad(he is my big influence) but you cant compare drummers who is better and who is worst...
in the list of great drummers, you have names such as bonham, peart and portnoy: i doubt any of them would be able to do what stewart did on the hihats and toms. Stewart shall be right up there

Hi Pete,
Let's discuss a possible Triplet Drum Glove Endorsement By Lento Percussion.

para explicar a Stewart Copeland, le falta todo...el groove, feeling! y hasta técnica!
este muchacho quiere abarcar mucho, pero le falta estudiar a "fondo" a las leyendas de las que hace el interview"...

When he says 'musical player' i think he meant that stewart is a good melodic player
BCDPRODUCTIONS1234 2 years ago
Well, really what he means is.
Stewart plays to drive to song, not to show off like a lot of band drummers tend to do.
