  • This was the first record which got me into black-based American music - me and some famous guys too! I incline to say 1954 as I heard it early 55 at age 15 from my maths teacher!

  • Get your ticket at the station

    on the Rock Island Line.

    ...a mighty good road

  • My Dad had this record and my brother and I wore it out! This is the best recording of the nany ofrock island line that Donegan did, love it!!

  • Actually, the Rock Island got no closer to New Orleans than Eunice, Louisiana, some distance west of New Orleans. God bless.

  • This version was recorded on 13/07/1954 in London LD vocal and guitar

    Chris Barber bass

    Beryl Bryden washboard

It was on the Chris Barber Jazz Band Album New Orleans Joys .Decca LF1198

John Henry was also on this album and together they were released in 1956 and credited to

    The Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group

the rest as they say is history

    Great Record

  • Cheers for posting. This is what started skiffle in the UK, actually it was 1956, not 1954. As Pete 'Kiwi' Keegan I formed my first skiffle group the same year. We were on 'All your own' BBCTV Nov 17th 1957 only a few months appart from Jimmy page who appeared with his friends in a skiffle group. Iam still doin skiffle 52 years later! ( check out my entries under Pete' Kiwi' Keegan. with thanks
