@smikestack All of my other Coltrane uploads have weird existential David Lynch photos, I just put a hot chick on this for fun, and it's resulted in goofy comment for years, now.
@opinioninflicting I don't think it's cheesy. Although I see his point, I think she is too beautiful to be cheesy. She's not some porn/sex object, but incredibly beautiful, just like this arrangement and interpretation.
my favorite things, naima and impressions is without doubt in my opinion the best coltrane songs (or rather song concepts as each performance takes you to someplace new yet familiar)
he had chosen the good name for his best track or maybe it s Naima, impossible to choose, i ll try to push the new students to lean it for a cover exam...
@andrejkiss music like it? nothing like it... coltrane was a once in an eon thing. he was in a class all on his own. there are dudes out nowadays that have plenty of talent, but its tough to say who is better/ worse than anyone else.
try looking up various free jazz or contemporary jazz guys and see what you like. im pretty sure ornette coleman is still touring. joshua redman is a very talented saxophonist, too, that is easily accessible.
Magnificent. Really one of the very best versions by the great quartet. But..is it Elvin? Or ROY HAYNES? They really tie in well to the Swedish vibe. The hottie blond reflects the wondrous energy of the music. Literally, the smack that band was using pretty much precluded--subsumed?--the sex drive, etc.
The amazing degree of lightness and sculpted detail by Trane, always building throughout, is just miraculous.
@lwwalker02 It definitely has a certain pacing, build-up and catharsis to it the batshit insane later versions lacked...almost like his sensibilities with "subtle" Miles Davis were still operative on his aesthetic. Later on it's like INSANEINSANEINSANE--physically tired, so playing slower--INSANEINSANE etc.
@opinioninflicting It was said that Coltrane's schedule often included doing a recording session or two all day and then go play a gig with 3 sets followed by jam session after hours. Then he would go home and practice for 3 more hours.........I guess you might say, he developed a "command" of his instrument?
Undoubtedly. I mean it's up there with Gould's Art of the Fugue and Goldberg variations. My only complaint would be that it lacks the stunning solos from Dolphy (live in Germany) or Tyner (studio recording).
it's like all the pain and torture his ancestors endured through slavery is being released through those wailing notes...and then it's all peaceful and joyful..and the drummers all like boom-chaboom-chaboom boom boom boom-chaboom chaboom boom boom boom and it flows so well and when it's over you feel better
it would make more sense if your words had been written by someone who didn't have a guilt complex going on. Deflecting your feelings onto someone else should make you feel guilty about your own actions and not by others actions 200 years ago. Let it go...my ancestors were slaves too and I don't want ANYONE feeling sorry for me. What a dork you are.
lol...uhhh yes i'm a dork. what i'm saying is there is some painful sounds being released from his saxaphone, and i feel my darkness being released just listening to it...and feelings are often passed down through ancestors until they are let go of...not feeling sorry for him...feeling sorry WITH him. peaCe
My fullest and deepest apologies for my misguided insult. I too feel emotional ties to music also. The connection to ones music is most strongest when knowing the artists past. Sorry, I'll move on.
And don't forget the performance with Eric Dolphy on insurpassably ethereal flute from Stockholm on 23 November 1961 (which prasiddha, is available on at least two cheap cds, one simply called "Live in Stockholm, 1961", lejazzcd 57
One of many examples of WHY Coltrane WAS the King of saxophone before his premature death. Remember: 1961?!?! Let's hope the girl was a devoted Coltrane fan!! And still is.
i'm glad to see the majority of comments on this video (one of my favourite recordings) are absolute gold. Fuck. Yes. Coffee now. ta
