Thanks, I determine that it wasn't easier then I thought it would be. Like, what you said I had to measure the right piece of boards for the steps so that it wouldn't be uneven. I didn't wait to buy the wrong piece of materials for the steps.
@bert1913 One you know your rise, divided say by eight. So lets say you would have 10 steps, times by like 12 inches would give you a stringer length of 12 feet.
Dominick great video! i am a rookie @ DIY. and your video was a great help!! i built my wife and I a 3 tier deck and the stairs look great!!! thanks!!
thank you! you make it simple, I went through sooooo many websites and didn't understand what they were doing & talking about, you make it clear and direct.
you are awesome! thanks again, Michele (ste adele, qc, canada)
Loved your work. I'm an Australian carpenter living in Japan and have been out of the trade for ten years. Looking to get back into it soon so need to brush up on my skills. Thanks to guys like you I can gain confidence by your ideas and knowledge .
Great video I have tried to get my head around stringers and your video just made it so easy and simple to do. I measured and cut the first one today and it was perfect, now I have my template for the rest. Thanks alot.
You should cut the tread thickness off of the bottom of the stringer. If you do not the bottom riser will be 9" which is a code violation. He did not show this but for those new to cutting stairs this will be a hard lesson to learn.
Hello Dominick....great video...just one question. At 4:29 in the video when you lay out the first step what is the measurement from the end of the 2x12 to your framing square? It looks like about 2 inches or so but you did not measure. Is this dimension critical??
Dominick, last night i watched this video, today i built my first set of steps. It turned out perfect and was quite easy due to your video. I thank you very much and stay cool man.
I'm not being a wise ass, but wouldn't it be easier to put the stops on the outside of the square? That way you can put them right on the number you need.
Dom you really did a great job with this video. You made it really easy to understand and covered parts that I couldn't find on other videos. You did a better job than Tom Silva on Ask This Old House. I don't think he covered the top or bottom cuts and didn't explain it as well. You also showed using blocks for outside stringers which saves me buying those expensive metal brackets. Thanks again Dom. Great job!!
@JPDADDIETUBE Thank you so so much. Yea this is what I do for a living and have to teach others on the job as well. Thanks again. I think I hear the TV people calling me now, LOL
@56GOLDIE Yes, you should cut the 1 1/2" off of the bottom of the stringer. Then when you drop it at the top for the tread thickness the steps will still be level. No one ever shows this step and it is critical to not having a 9" riser at the bottom.
i used this video and built my own, now im getting sued because they collapsed, and someone was badly insured, i mean yeah i cut corners, but its not my fault.. sort of
@aussieace450 Cut corners ? While that would be why. Never ever cut corners while building stairs. Been building stairs like for 30 years, All inspected and NEVER did I cut corners. And never have they broke.
@aussieace450 NO WAY DUDE...This video WAS NOT a complete how to video. It was just a helping hand to measure and lay out stringers and steps. NOTHING else was touched on, how to support them, screws or nails, what the strigers really should rest on, what brackets can be used and how to properly build the railing...if you built your own steps solely using this 10 minute video then the collapsed steps are ALL YOUR FAULT...Thanks DominickDiy for a great vid on how to just lay out the steps.
I've seen several videos on how to build stairs and never had the guts to put them to use, but I used your lesson and today I built two sets of stairs for my deck and will do the final set tomorrow. it was very easy and not scary at all. Thanks
i used to watch alot of time vidoes but he didnt like that i pointed out he is very very well off and he likes to show off his toys that his cliants pay for via the bills:)
NICE VID, i have a question a bought a house, i want to add my more counter space in the kitchen, so i can add a dishwasher, any ideas, i cant find where the kitchen was bought from, called a different place, way to much, wanna do it myself, any helpful ideas or tatics? haha thanks

Thanks Dominick, I've done a lot of DIY over the years, but never any stairs, so I appreciate the time and effort you put in to making this video.
Nice to be able to avoid some costly mistakes, but more important is saving my family from breaking their necks.

You must do a video on how to attach vinyl siding to an existing vinyl wall. Preferably on the bottom side of it.
Would like to see how it's done.
