  • a perfect segue to the thigh massage video...

  • Saw this late last night on TCM. The ice river crossing footage is really amazing.

  • Google "Dr. Lewis Steiner" and see how blacks were in the Confederacy's Army!

  • This is a very sad scene ...

I read UTC in 7th grade; I want to read it again soon. It's been a very long time since they made a movie version - I can understand why, since the story shows so much painful racism.

  • It is a shame that Blacks do not want to be associated with uncle Tom when in fact he was a wonderful person.

  • Good clip, wish I could see it all. It's really a pity that "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was considered offensive, since the book so vehemently condemned slavery, and it put African-Americans in a much more human light than other media of its time.

  • @LuvvyDuck This 1903 film was produced by Thomas Edison to promote his new motion pictures technology. It's just been released, at full length, as part of a DVD about Uncle Tom's Cabin. See my channel for clips.

  • @uncletomscabindvd Thank you! I'll check it out as soon as I can. :)

  • @LuvvyDuck The problem with the clip (and with Uncle Tom's character in general) is that it infantilized black people. The only way to gain sympathy from Whites to demonize the actions and perceptions they had towards Black people was to create a character that was docile and extremely kind (almost child-like) towards the people who had not yet given him any reason to be kind.

  • Ooh, ganked with thumbs down Crankee. lol.

Anyways, this clip is a great upload.

  • Thanks, historic film. African Americans were barred from acting in serious roles, so this shows a white man in blackface in an anti-slavery film (ironic). You can see his receding hair line of straight light brown hair. Back then they thought a white actor with black paint on his face was something to be taken seriously, but few spectators had evolved to human dignity.

  • Thank you for posting something from this important film. Does anyone have access to the comoplete the complete film, and if so, could you post? thanks!

  • good effects for 1903

  • that´s awesome!

  • sound

  • sound did not really hit until the mid 1920s
