  • It was to be better if master Segovia teached how he harmonized it from the violin work that it was. How to play it is a matter of technical skill and taste, good taste before death.

  • Merci... :))

  • Watching this, one could only imagine what it must've been like to be a student of Mozart's or Da Vinci as they were imparting their craft on their students. This may be as close as we'll get to seeing a classical master at work.

  • what's the name of this opera?

  • @60UnNamed09 they call it Chaconne, Violin Partiata no 2 in Dm BWV 1004 -Johann Sebastian Bach

  • Excelente, sin duda tambien es como un Gran tutorial para tocar esta magnifica obra :D

  • she is probably a granny by now LOL teaching her grandchildren (one can only hope so)

  • great video. Great teachers are so enjoyable to watch as they impart their wisdom. He works his magic with his pupil. I am sure she felt honored to have him share his knowledge with her. Master classes are so fun. What a gift to the world he was. Glad they captured this on tape.

  • This woman is not so bad

  • Unbelievable how much segovia was good. Unbeliavable...Correct me if I'm wrong, but in all these years I haven't heard anyone able to play this piece with the same pathos as segovia do. It's absolutely my favourite execution by Segovia.

  • segovia came in for a lot of criticism for the over expressive way he played bach. Personally I LOVE it and I really like the way Alirio diaz plays it too...heavily influenced obviously by this fine teacher. Very interesting little video. Great posting.

  • Segovia sin lugar a duda el mejor

  • ojalá en algún mundo paralelo, en otra vida, tenga por abuelo un guitarrista como Segovia jiji

  • it sounds really cool when two play at the same time...like a 12 string almost

  • Wow, you can tell that the master was strict and a perfectionist. But hey, thats why he was and still is Andrés Segóvia.

  • excuse me, what year is this from ?

  • @guitarfan1979 i think around 1965

  • No No, you hav to caress dis E. Brilliance.

  • @kchaney56 How do i reeeeach theeeeese kiiiiids :D

  • The girl sounds very good, That not true , she is very talented guitarist!

  • thanks for sharing this...

  • Top notch.

  • "dont go so fast.. let every phrase.." hes huge!

  • i had shivers when he corrected the first students playing and played it himself.

  • i whish to be one of your student if i was born in that era

  • The Chaconne was Bach's most epic work, without a doubt.

  • @Aurelius27x No, it was not. The great Passacaglia was. But Chaconne is sure number 2 :-)

  • On many pieces, I don't like Sergovia's phrasing at all. It is true, he has done more than anyone for the classical but there are better players now.

  • Mother's Grace

    Oh Father of the Guitar..

Thanks for making the Guitar a Solo instrument

You are the creator of Guitarists in the planet earth

    Bless me

  • I believe she was young in comparation to Segovia, so she tried to do all fast as someone young, eager to get the world, instead Segovia took his time since it is older leaving to have the sound to stay allowing to spread

  • @ugaru01 In comparison to Segovia, everyone was young.

  • It´ s absolutly symbiotic MAESTRO SEGOVIA and the total music (Bach ciaconna BWV 1004)....dreamful thank you very very much

  • Absolutely amazing the difference ! That´s why on youtube he is critizized and in the music world, between really sensitive people, he´s a MASTER of interpretation. We´re not talking of Justin Bieber, but a master wich reputation build within his playing and toning...! Amazed ?

  • andres segovia is my idol i think no 1 will ever be beter than the master, watch me also leo rene or leo rene dima-ala thanks!!

  • NOBODY PLAYED LA CHACONNE LIKE SEGOVIA AND HIS PUPIL PARKENNING !!

  • Really amezing

  • Really amzing

  • I agree, my teacher is in this room.

  • Heartbreaking really to hear how much more comes from his fingers than from the students. I saw him just a few months before he died. Much of the performance was out of focus and a bit soft. But every once in a while the whole picture would come into view and it was astounding!

  • @chaosIsTheOnlyPower You saw Segovia a few months before died? That must have been his US tour. I had tickets to see him too, but he died on me. They gave me replacement tickets to see Isaac Stern instead. I wish I could have seen Andres..

  • AYYYYYY!!!! es feo que el maestro te corrija!!!! después te comen los nervios y no te sale nada, Gracias IRENE PEREZ por su paciencia

  • Do you think he banged her afterwards? She's hot!

  • @StephenMulhall yes hes a pimp named grandpa slap guitar

  • how good you must be to find flaws in that woman's playing !!

  • grande maestro

  • grandissimo Maestro Segovia!

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • this chaconne is worth all the troubles it might ever bring to anyone in learning it.

  • i would totally shit on my pants...

  • I think the way I play this piece would make Segovia furious, but Bach smile... that is because I think Bach smiles at every moment someone plays his music.

  • Can you even imagine getting to play for him ? That alone puts you in a class so high most of us cannot imagine.

  • @Soulfree2008 True that. I'll never be "technically" perfect because I broke my fingers so many times in Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and stuff. But I "LOVE" classical guitar so much and I love the music so much while I play it that decades of playing the guitar anyhow is surely paying off. :)

    cheers

  • amazing dosent it make you want to pick up a guitar and put your heart and soul into it

  • che sogno.. una masterlass con segovia.. peccato che ci abbia lasciato.. un elogio al Grande Chitarrista..

  • "Don't go so fast," he says, yet students all over the world right this second get judged on whether it takes them 16 minutes or 13 minutes to complete this song as if it's a factory spitting out donuts.

I sense irony when I see people trying to teach formalizations of "Segovia Style" when he taught himself to play, and just plain loved the music out loud for us for so many decades.

We are to love the music or just shut up really...

  • @Unpromoted

I second that. However, it must be noted that someone like Segovia - being as good as he was - was a performer, not a teacher. The saddest thing of all in Western society is people mistake these two. They are mutually exclusive. Teaching is a skill that needs to be learned. It's a shame people think because one can do something they are also qualified to teach it. It's absurd.

  • Genial...

  • why she hurry? she have to listen esch note, care as brillian each note...

  • Hell....I'd give my right nut to play like even she does....but Andres is right. The feeling is something that comes from the soul. I disagree with people who say that him teaching feeling is wrong. People who are of this caliber get so wrapped up in getting it technically correct that they forget it's more than just an exercise in proficiency. Any guitarist can tell you that when you learn another person's music, you need to get it technically correct first and then get the feeling down

  • @guitarjag72 @guitarjag72 Exactly... Him teaching the 'feeling' is precisely why people took master classes with him... Really isn't that the point of a master class?

And Segovia in many ways was a sloppy player (compared to John Williams for example) but he had more feeling in his little finger than most do in their whole being...

  • She already knows the piece. It was getting the feeling down. That's where tone comes into play that differentiates every great guitarist from one another.

As the great Steve Vai once said. "Tone comes from your head, not the instrument."

Segovia already knew this and conveys this

    to his students.

    thanks for posting.... 5 STARs

  • At the beginning she had to correct a C, not an E

    as Segovia says.(just noticed)

  • @greywrath he actually says "C" it's just hard to hear because of his spanish accent :)

  • No, no, no.... you must constantly use rubato when you play baroque music......???? It will be "nicer".

  • Notice that most of the comments made by Andres are related to the "feeling", not the mechanics of playing the guitar. You have to convey the actual message the author of the piece wanted to convey. I think he was awful nice with this student. I saw him in person and he was really nasty with some of the students. If you spoke Spanish, it was worst. HE treated you more harshly, and almost beat you with his hand.

  • lol....

  • It just depends on the student. He wasn't f***ing around. He was passionate, determined and not always right, but he did everything with conviction that could melt a bank vault.

  • thats ridiculous

  • Great posting 5*****

    Claude

  • Who is she? What a great way to teach. Very honest and right to the point.

  • imagine if you spoke spanish... I'm sure it may be a little less hard than in english. he's correct and is very musical.. the man redefined the guitar.

  • it's funny to hear the difference between the two. i'm sure she is a great player in her own right, but to hear her next to segovia makes her sound like an amateur lol

  • True but, she has brass ones for doing it. Also, you don't get taught by the man being a washed up no talent. Who ever this woman gave birth to should feel blessed, if she did. I'm not railin on anyone here just saying that she is far better than I. A master and his student.

  • @sircloud7 Agree!

  • Dang, I don't imagine myself having a lesson with this guy, it is just... something else.

  • WOW

  • I'd much rather have a hard ass teacher then a soft pushover who will let things slide because he doesn't now how to phrase the problem.

  • @LOLUWANTFRIESWITHDAT I agree. And at least when he's happy, you know for sure that he is.

  • @LOLUWANTFRIESWITHDAT While I think he gives her a lot of good insight on how to speak the language of the instrument more effectively, he does seem to "correct" a lot of her flourishes or decorations. I think that sort of goes against the baroque spirit of performer's preference and improvisation. It becomes more about how Segovia chooses to express himself. There's no truly "wrong" way to play a baroque piece. That being said, he does a good job of getting her to be less mechanical.

  • cant you all be happy that we are sittng in on a class with one of the greatest guitar players ever . man if you can do better then post a vid i would love to learn....

  • Hah, I know right? This video is probably close to 50 years old.

  • he forces her to feel the same way he feels, and i think hear guitar is out of tone, at the very beginning.

  • Your english is correct, and you make a valid point.

    You and NWLAstrings :)

  • Well, of course there's language but Segovia seems to have some difficulties in spoken english (as you can see throughout the video).

And, I think one should know his/her position there, a student must listen to the teacher.

  • When the Maestro spoke, you fvcking listened!

Segovia was the bravest classical guitarist ever - real balls to the wall approach to playing!

  • she had a bit of trouble at the end but she was pretty good.

  • el es el mejor maestro de la guitarra ,maestro de maestros

  • so very true

  • dont think so mate segovia is the populised the guitar

  • Relax, guys! I was only joking-))) Segovia was a fantastic classical guitarist. But he wasn't a great teacher. If you interfere when somebody is playing every second, people lose confidence. Have a nice day.

  • Read the title. "masterclass". You're expected to be able to keep up.

Most classical lessons were done exactly like this

  • Yeah right... Like John Williams doesn't own everything he learned to Segovia.

  • you obviously have no idea about classical pedagogy. I would want them to stop me when i'm playing to tell me what to do. Esp. someone such as segovia

  • The part I didn't like was when he was just playing along. As if he just couldn't let THEM play then just stop them when he's wanting to show them something and THEN play. Not play all over their playing. Get ready for thumbs down.

  • You obviously do not know what you are talking about. It is well known that Segovia was a brilliant mentor as well as player. Ask Bream.

  • Neither of your last two facts indicates any proficiency in teaching.

  • I taught CIS in college for 2.5 years and taught guitar at a HUGE music store in Memphis, TN and from home until finger injuries forced me to stop. What WOULD indicate that I have any proficiency in teaching? I had over 30 students a week. I doubt you'll really want to go much further with this. It is usually the people who make a bald accusation w/o evidence who run off when they are exposed as ignorant on the topic at hand. Your move.

  • Aha! The game is afoot! Rook to b5. Your move.

  • okay. my king to your king. Captured annnnnnnd CHECKMATE! :) Although we both know a king can't capture another king. I just thought since we were in fantasy land I'd continue right along. :) hehehe

  • U can´t king to his king mate. Its an illegal move LOL

  • I know that. :)

  • My king has a bomb strapped to his ass.

  • "Learned" - no, but "greatly influenced by" most assuredly - yes. Ask him.

  • I was only quoting Bream HIMSELF! (Whom I have met and admire greatly.)

But you seem to know him better than he does himself ... such arrogance!

You also obviously have some feelings against Segovia that have nothing to do with his universally acclaimed (including Julian Bream) musical genius. You need to learn to separate the two.

For example, Karajan played for Hitler, but notwithstanding, do you also deny his musical genius?

Lose your bitterness - you will live longer and be happier.

  • Why do you come and watch Segovias videos then? You probably hate your self even more...

  • I'm sure if I typed in Janggo Reinhardt into the search engine, I doubt I'd get results for DJANGO Reinhardt.

  • That's not Segovia but the student. She didn't want to stop & watch the Segovia playing. Instead, she keep playing herself when Segovia try to interrupt her & show her his interpretation.

  • Nope. THere is this neat thing called "language" and it has cool words like "wait" and "stop" and "hold on for a second" etc. It's called communication. Playing along as a student tries to show you what they are doing is VERY distracting to the student. Hearing your playing AND the teachers is bad. All the thumbs down I got were from people who have NOT taught and NOT thought about it (or cannot understand).

  • this is a master class. they are not beginners. the problem with this is, that the woman is technically already really good, but he is trying to teach her something you can't learn from a teacher, and that is understanding and feeling for the music, so the whole lesson is pretty pointless I reckon

  • Now, there's a point. If you supposedly can't be taught "feeling", what tha hell is he doing? hahah Well, my take is Segovia was teaching his way and that was that. You want lessons? you do it his way. Don't like it? Don't sign up.

  • the mistakes of the woman can't be solved by a teacher, but only be repeatedly listening to the piece. this whole thing is maybe just about "getting inspired by the master"

  • I wonder if Segovia ever played a wrong note on a recording or in concert. I'm not really familiar with all the pieces he played but I can't recall hearing anything that made me go "ouch". Probably why he was da bomb in his day.

  • what is the person who makes someone understand something? A TEACHER! Esp a music teacher

  • First of all...If you see your teacher playing then you, as a student, you have to STOP and LISTEN--

And that's a master-class for... To let the Master teach you how to play this piece..of course, in his style!! cause that's why you go there!

maybe it would have been better to let the player play through the piece and after that the comments about her playing...but you never know how many students were waiting for a lesson with him and the time was limited

  • ....

So don't defend the "poor" students, cause that is exactly what they are not! they were very lucky to have someone as great and wonderful as he is as a teacher.

    and beside that

if you here something that you don't like, say it! Don't let him/her play for half hour and then say.. "good..very good ..excelent but i have a few things to say...." and teach for just 5-6 minutes..and after that.

    NEXT STUDENT Pls

  • he does not know about music, he haven't learn to hear music, jimi hendrix was only a lucky lick guy, but segovia, was a combination from knowledge, feeling, and composition skill.

  • So, you're saying Segovia couldn't play the guitar? I don't think Jimi (!) Hendrix would agree with you.

  • Hahaha The funniest thing I've ever heard.

  • I dont feel bad for them,I mean, this is good for them to learn. And someone said Segovia is an angry man xD, not really, I just think he is trying to help. I wish I played with him...

  • but he is teaching her...and they suck. None of them have any feeling as he probably says

  • hahaha they suck?!?!?! id like to see you do better. all hes doing is making her play more like him.

  • When compared to Segovia everybody sucks.. I feel bad for her since she has to try to appease Segovia. That would be the most nerve wracking thing ever.

  • he gets frustrated because number 1 he can't speak his native language here and 2 it is difficult for him to talk about things he has never had to even think about before. guitarists don't think about how they play they just think of playing. and everyone was there to play like him so he was doing the best he can.

  • Awesome video. Thanx 4 posting it for everyone to enjoy. : )

  • jeje Miss Chaconne

  • man segovias guitar makes hers sound like a toy, she lets it rip there for awhile and he lets her go. these are some great videos.

  • This guy is too good!

  • It seems that she practiced the piece a lot, but at the end of the rapid scales she appears quite tired, maybe because she followed original Segovia's digits :-)

Anyway, this seems to be the only video that shows Segovia playing live some "slices" of the Chaconne, isn't it?

  • Segovia was the father of them all !

  • Well I guess in the arts, greatness is subjective in as far as opnion goes.

  • God, he was a terrible teacher. More like a dictator. He squashes any artistic voice that the student might express, just trying to supplant it with his own opinions. He obviously had no interest in the player having his/her own style. More like he want to create an army of guitarist that imitated him.

She plays great beautifully by the way.

  • I hear man, when you good enough to be in his class, why bother.

  • Hes not trying to make her imitate him. hes trying to get her to match the song as closely as possible. Also hes just telling to feel the music. hes telling her to let the music flow. Can you think what music would be like without feel? It would be bland and there would be no emotion. Just listen to dragonforce. It has no feel which makes it boring.

  • He's stopping her every 2 measures so that he can influence the way she interprets every single phrase. John Williams talks about this. He said that Segovia never made any comments about the overall mood or feel of a piece; comments that would have helped a student develop there own interpretation and voice. It's always "put some vibrato here", "slow down here". He loved being imitated. When students would play pieces just like he recorded them, he would heep praise on them.

  • Well John williams as good as he is was never on Segovia's level, maybe he should of paid more attention when Segovia was teaching him. Segovia was adding his own knowledge to the student, its up to the student to take this exp and build on it not the teacher's problem.

  • I certainly have my problems with Segovia at times but this clearly shows how stiffly she plays it and he demonstrates a much more lyrical feel.

And I don't even like this piece at all! Probably the least favorite of all Bach pieces.

On some pieces I love Williams and others I prefer Segovia or Bream or Parkening. And sometimes I really dislike any of those players choices.

Maybe she's very nervous but it sounds like she's very detached here from the music. It aint easy.

  • Brigitte Zaczek, the pretty girl on the video, is nowadays teaching at the University of Music in Vienna.

She is the perfect example how some Segovia´s students moved on and became much better pedagogues (and musicians) than he actually was.

She is at the moment dedicated to romantic guitar music played on original instruments.

It´s not a coincidence that she is one of the few students for whom Segovia showed some respect on the videos. He treated other people so roughly :-((

  • i agree with most of what youre saying alot of his students did go on to become better teachers but no one will ever come close to the skills he had on the guitar

  • Are you kidding me? Don't get me wrong, Segovia was a master. But if you think that Segovia's skills can't be matched then you just haven't been listening. Try these artists: David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Pepe Romero, Julian Bream, John Williams, The Assad Brothers, Ana Vidovic, and many many more.

  • I totally agree with you!! I would add Alvaro Pierri, Pavel Steidl, B.Zaczek, Marco Socías, etc...

  • Hes trying to teach her dynamics.

  • :-)

  • I heard one time he punched a students jaw loose for being out of tune.

  • LOL

  • thanks!

    it really helps a lot.

i'm also so glad my guitar teacher always reminds me to feel every single note - and that is what we always have to remember in rock or in classic or in alsmost every other music.

  • This is a wonderful insight into the finesse of a master who was concerned more with artistic mastery than technical precision. Seeing him perform Asturia is a perfect example of this where he foregoes speed for emotion and subtlety. A true master.

  • ive seen BWV for alot of BACH music what does it stand for

  • 1004, I think

  • bach werke verzeichnis

bach works catalog... bach's music is all cataloged by bwv number

  • What is the BWV for this piece?

  • 1004, Partita un Dm for violin solo.

  • fantastic glimpse into history - thanks for posting.

  • Beautiful people! Thank you Daniel for posting this great video. Andres like a Buddhist master. xxx

  • she's not Galina Vale she is Brigitte Zaczek.

    (Thank you LogenWilliams )

  • Dear Brigitte Zaczek!

Even back then, you were great!

While some of Segovia's insights here are OK, people are gradually becoming aware of some of his rather unsatisfactory idiosyncrasies {such as the over-excessive first sforzando (as can be hear on Segovia's own recording - but I wonder if's perhaps a small slip in his recording, and that he might not even have meant to play it so sfffz anyway...)}, etc...

Brigitte, today your playing is - of course - better than ever.

  • its galina vale isn't she?
