I saw Segovia when I was 18. This was in 1979. At the end of the concert, I was in tears. It is one of the high points of my life that I was in the presence of a colossus such as him.
Only a total prick would criticize Segovia because he couldn't play fluently at the age of 92. The man had been there, done it and got the T-shirt long, long before this video.
The posters criticizing Segovia here are probably sports fans and believe politicians are there to serve their people. Even at the END of his career, there was something magical and uniquely expressive about Segovia's playing; if you can't hear it, you're a dullard.
Segovia was a master, ther's no doubt about that. I'll never be as good as he is but I have to say that he sould know when to retire and stop playing.
PD: Segovia was jelous of Barrios virtuosity and skills so that's why he didn't liked him and never played any Barrios piece,(also becaouse of the "La Catedral" score affair look for it on the internet). When Barrios played La Catedral in fron of Segovia -with Segovia's guitar lol- Segovia inmediatly knew that he wasn't the best payer in the world
Julian Bream's performances of this piece are the only performances of his that I like more than any of Segovia's; I don't know why Segovia is not up to par on this piece.
@failsallaround Andres Segovia was scared of electricity from being electrocuted thats why he has white hair and always played unplugged... Geniuses and the quirks, huh?
For all of his detractors, one thing you must say about El Maestro, he had staying power. He gave his last concert just 3 weeks before his death, at 93 years of age. Love him or hate him, you cannot dismiss his influence on the guitar.
Grande Grande Grande.
One of the greatest guitarist of all time. You cannot find the passion, the feeling that he put into his music anymore. And for someone to say he was bad.. is outrageous. He was 92, like they said, its amazing for him to live that long, AND still play guitar, and have the vast understanding that he had of it.
I'd like to know who was better. Too bad People are Ignorant to point out mistakes about a 92 year old Guitar Master the only one who walked Planet Earth. Sad. See those People Out play him at 92 let alone his prime. I've never heard a guitarist electric or acoustic come even close to the Master Andres. Take Care Brother. Happy & Safe Holidays.
That he was 92 must have motor skills more difficult making it more impressive. You can tell the energy in his fingers was fading, however with the smoothness it is not neede for this piece. Anyway i only noticed one mistake at the beginning.
Thank you for posting it - I am a great Segovia admirer.
To play as subtle as this at that age - hats off!
To peopüle who critisize he was past his prime I have only to say: Show me your achievements at the same age and we talk again! I for one shall be happy to be half as agile then!
Wow, so interesting, this was Segovia near the end of his life, definitely in the 1980s, when I saw him so many times. It doesn't matter that he was so far past his prime, very interesting to see him still performing as human being..
BRAVO!!! To one of the best classical guitar players of all time.

What a Maestro.
He ranked up with Itzhak Perlman in his craft.
ecmorandomnumbers 2 years ago
Close, I believe it would be more precisely said that Perlman ranks with Segovia (but then I may be biased to the guitar). Anyway, who came first? 8)
