I bought a 94 us model c280 in 1999 and have driven it since. few material objects in this world could command so much love and faith as my trusty old friend of a car. I've got a c43 amg and still prefer my old c280. I've got 250,000 miles on each!
@peugeotCitroen2CV This car was designed in the early 90s. euro ncap was established in 1997. there were different crash tests at the time the old c came out. Look at similar cars from it's time and you will see none got good ratings.
Neither Topgear nor Mercedes are the same anymore. At least Mercedes is rediscovering its quality but there seems to be no such hopes in sight for Topgear at least. As cityflyguy put it they have now become a mindless talk show with some cars thrown in
@tigrelle I think I can answer for him, after the chrysler acquisition everything went downside, for example the w203 was plagued with electronic problems and was pretty unreliable.
Now mercedes is getting better again, because it is no longer with chrysler, but it still doesn't live up to the old models.
but, like any used car its only as good as the person who owned it. if its in good condition when u buy it, its not hard to keep it that way. good luck.
oh & just so u kno its my fav car in the world , would def recommend
I have bought myself a 1999 c180 elegance 6 years ago, and am still very happy with it. Do not have any problems finding people at work who want to car-poole with me.
@mazzoza19 hey man do you have any problems with this car? i heard the rear diff leaks a very little bit, how about rust? and how much liters/100km does it consume (average driving, not like michael schumacher), i want to buy one. I would be very thankful if you can answer those questions.
@elemineseslapolla hey the cars a dream, no diff problems, no rust & really quite good on fuel. i own a c200 and in the country u'd get roughly 800k's from a tank. and in city driving its not bad either! to be honest therye not as slow as people sya either. its faster than my old 3.6 litre holden. personally i wouldnt get the c180 coz that prolly is very underdone, but at the end of the day these arnt race cars so up to you.
@elemineseslapolla my old car on the stat sheet did 0-100km in 8seconds the mercedes on the stat sheet does it in 11 seconds. im telling right now the mercedes is hands down quiker in real life. both were in good condition. this car in this clip is a c180 an records a time of 14 seconds. the fuel milage i told you was using premium fuel tho.
I have1996! Bought from mercedes brend new ! Very good engine and good susspension only the fuel is running without limits! I love this car ... After driving 15 years i still satisfied with it! So my mesege to the "rats" who made negative comments is simply fuck you!
recently got myself a 1996 C200 elegance and i must say for a car thats nearly 15 years old and has 148000 miles on the clock it feels more solid and a much higher quality then the 2010 ford focus i took my driving test in. the only thing that is wrong with my car is the rear drivers side electric window has given up. I mainly like the quality of the inteior no ratly plastics and as said by clarkson in this video all the switches and things feel factory fresh.
My family has the top of the range elegance estate. it is great, all the problems in this model are solved. The only real problem is fuel econmy. it is quite thirsty.
Takes somewhere between 8 to 9 litres of fuel per hundred kilometres. Not modest by todays standards, but it's not too bad. I'm driving a C180 (Elegance variant) and I like it a lot.
Clarkson makes the C class sound slow, poorly equipped and ugly. Yes it would be, it's a C180 in basic trim and standard colour. He could have done the C class more justice by at least choosing a C200 or C220 in better trim with a nicer colour etc......... Todays mercs are of course miles faster, even in the basic 180 models.
I too own a W202. Probably my best choice Iv ever made. So far she has served me well, I have personally only put 13k miles on it but have yet to have a single problem with and it will still do 130mph without a problem! (2.8 V6)
You gotta give Mercedes respect for spending considerable years to develop an entry level sedan. Most car makers don't bother investing time into a small sedan, and spend all of the effort on the most expensive model.
@1bentley4ever They don't used to make cars like they used to,Mercedes for example are poor in quality than Bmw and I'm talking about the present,in the '80,'90 and even early 2000 Benz were above Bmw,Audi in terms of quality, confort etc.Now Audi is catching up to Bmw,and Bmw is above Benz.
@SacreDro It's a real shame. I am glad to see Merc making cars like the new E-class and the S-class, but it's really incredible that in about 15 years Audi, who was in obscurity compared to Merc and BMW, will soon beat them both in sales. BMW in my opinion is THE most wasteful luxury car company when it comes to wasting R and D money on ridiculous vehicles such as the X6. You just don't see Audi making pointless cars.
@amgjens My memory is a little rusty, but it seems like BMW is mass producing cars for such niche buyers they won't get a ton of sales. The X6, 5-series Gran Turismo are very unique but won't get as many buyers as the X5 and 5-series sedan.
@amgjens True. At least on the American market models, the new C-class is chintzy and cheapy and plasticky. Mercedes seemed to do cost cutting to compete with the 3-series.
@1bentley4ever actually it wasn't just on American models, and it's not the case anymore, you see, it wasn't just exchange rates that were the problem, German labor costs were rising and it meant that "overengineering" was too expensive, so that meant they had to cut costs, luckily Mercedes is now returning to its roots and quality is rising back to what it was during the glory days
@kernals12 I hear the quality is coming back and I welcome back. Mercedes still is the most influential car company in history. It was their technological breakthroughs which led the industry. I hope someday in my life to see Mercedes make a car as great as the 600 Grosser again. That was probably the highest quality car ever made.
@tropicofcancer188 A lot of '90s Benzes had rust problems because they switched to water based paint and were still learning the in's and out's of it.
Yep, the good old solid W202. I'm very pleased BMW drivers don't like the C class. Mercedes and BMW drivers are in different classes - fast, sporty, show off, throw it around driving = BMW, slow, laid back, elegant cruising = Mercedes - Benz. Clarkson hits the nail right on the head.
I just brought a red 1995 C-180 merc today. It may not be the most modern car out there, but I still feel like I can drive in style!! I never experienced that with my 2005 Ford... The C180 is not a sports car, just sports meets practicality. It is also safe, gets AWESOME millage and sports that beautiful silver Merc emblem on the front! Who could complain?
I own a C class 280 - 1998 2.8l 6cyl inline... it's de elegance..with abs srs clymatizer electric seats windows... it may not be a modern car but it feels good... it does 0/60 in 8 secs and at least 145 mph top speed... it's a very very good car for the price...
The sad thing is the top gear of today would happily destroy old beatiful mercedes, bmw, lexus, audi, saab etc for 5 minutes of what is meant to be entertainment.
