i had to make a slideshow with this song for the holocaust unit we did let me tell u some of the pictures u cant even tell what it is so u cant decide if ur gonna be sick from horror or not...lets just say we hope history doesnt repeat itself
Why aren't Rush in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Does the Rock Hall even care about all the Jews that were killed during the Holocaust? Or is the rock hall nothing but a bunch of selfish jerks? Damn the Rock and Roll Hall of Selfishness.
@TheBlueBandYTAccount Perhaps you're not paying attention to the terrifying lyrics of this song. It's one of the most powerful songs ever to address the Holocaust, and even such a dramatic song as this doesn't convince the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that Rush are worthy of recognition. God, the Rock Hall must be laughing their asses off.
"I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gate, are the liberators here, do I hope or do I fear?" -- definitely a Holocaust song...
Grace Under Pressure just keeps growing on me. As a young Rush fan I didn't think a lot of it compared to their older stuff, but the more you listen the richer the album gets.
@ AssaultFireThreat What is RoF? I'm looking at their entire discography N can't find anything like that. In fact, the ONLY title I can find where the last word starts with an F is Hold Your Fire...
@ Rowdymax1 I'm sorry, it IS Vital Signs. I didn't see someone had answered you, Googled it N it came up Dog years. I THOUGHT it was older than Test For Echo...
Canadians had so many brilliant bands and musicians such as this group. They were one of the few groups from the 70's to bring Progressive music to the mainstream for one of the Rock elements. These guys have so very good talent, for a three piece group. I'd say "One of my most fav bands of Progressive rock/metal music." :)
theres maybe a handful of old bands which can instantly transport me back to my childhood upon hearing their music, rush is definitely one of em. awesome lyrics aside, this music makes me think about playing in the yard/woods with my star wars figures and various other toys. what a great band.
Hi Ho hi ho to the fema camps we go,The gov't is voting on NDAA today, looks like posse commatitus is dead.your papers please until we chip you will be the norm
@ButtcrackObama RoF is my favorite Ryche album of all time....great, no, AMAZING guitar work, and absolutley jaw dropping vocals. Truly a work of art. RUSH RULES
Both of Geddy Lee's (The bassist, singer, keyboardist, and sometimes composer) parents were holocaust survivors who met on the way home. He was raised in a Jewish, Polish home. When Neil Peart (the drummer and percussionist) decided to write a song about the holocaust, he consulted Geddy. This was a personal, difficult song for the both of them, but one of their deeper pieces.
When I went to see Rush last summer, and this song was not on the set list, it broke my heart... Pretty good show though, it was at the ACC in Toronto.
Can anyone suggest some songs either by Rush or any good band that has lyrics either similar to this song or as lyrically heavy as this song. I mean this is some pretty heavy stuff lyrically.
Has anyone seen the 2000 film "Battlefield Earth" starring John Travolta? I heard it won the Golden Raspberry award for "Worst Movie Of The Decade". It's said to be quite a bad movie, but the movie's theme is future war, which is what comes to mind everytime I hear this song. Life is short so enjoy every single moment of it.
The red army did not free either of Geddy's parents. The Western Allies liberated camps which they were captive in (Bergen Belson for the mom, Dachau for the dad)
@JonnyMr3330 You are wrong and there is no way in any other universe in any other parallel realm that you could have been more wrong and more of a dumbass.
yeah its a slap in rush's face when you post crap about nickelback.... come on people nickelback sucks there untalented there just like acdc all there shit sounds exactly the same. and posting things about slayer on this song is just plain wrong. nickel back is terrible, i said and i will continue to say it if you want to debate that statement then your an idiot who knows nothing about art and music
When I see watch the opening sequence of the first X-Men movie (Erik Lensherr/Magneto in the prison camp watching his parents taken away), I hear this song in the background...
Yeah, Alex's dad was in prisoner camps... BOTH of Geddy's parents were survivors. They basically showed some class with this tune, which is one of my favorites off what some would say is a forgettable CD.
Please stop insulting RUSH by in some way linking them to nickelback & slayer.I will give you a nickel to shut up! If you know anything about Rush you would keep your stupid comments to yourself. Both Geddy & Alex have prison camps in their heritage.Neil has suffered his own traumas. Let's be thankful they have devoted themselves to comforting our traumas. Possibly the greatest band on earth. It's like if Bach had a "band". Which one Bach? All of them!!!

@GTA4Gaston actually niel wrote it based on a book he read written by a woman who was sent to a concentration camp at 13 along with her father brother and mother. the part about helping her mother stand up straight was from a part in the book where she describes how she and some other girls in the camp would stand next to her mother, holding her up so that she would be deemed fit to work that day at role call
@Legionbass19 Yes they were, I learned that the first time I heard this song, my father, a big fan of Rush, told me that. Geddy decided to write a song about that.
@PAMAROSHOUSE uuugh, stop saying that word, you people are ruining the vibes here and in every comment section. Everybody PLEASE vote down these stupid comments, vote them down until they are trashed or spammed..!!
@ the1134steve...Power Windows is one of my favourite albums, Mystic Rythms one of my fave songs..after watching Beyond The Lighted Stage I find Lifeson's comments interesting..he felt pushed to the side by the keyboards and yet some of the guitar work on this album is awesome...the solo's in Marahton, Big Money, the main riff of Manhatten Project for example...
@GalfRendun -agreed.how is it that bands like pink floyd(which are fine bands)got a whole movie to strut their sounds, yet rush haven't?
manhatten and mystic instrumentals could make great soundtracks for big screen films with lots of special effects (like fellow canadian james cameron's avatar, for example
This album amazes me to no end. There is no band as great as Rush. They have such a variety of music, all of it at a ridiculous level of amazingness (I don't think that's a word). Honestly, if I could only listen to one band or artist for the rest of my life, I would choose Rush. I think I'm gonna have my dad find his Grace Under Pressure CD tomorrow...
I was one of those people that grew up listening to the "old " RUSH and this was definately a turn in their musical direction at that time. I remember, destinctly, running out and buying this album and then feeling sorely disappointed by it. But now 26 years later (HOLY SHIT! Has it been THAT long?!?),this is one of the songs from that album that has always lingered in my memory. I love it when I put down music and then rediscover it's genius years later, makes it worth loving them all over again.
While I was into this song upon it's release, I find it interesting that my appreciation for the music may not be simply nostalgic, as your post intuits it is timeless.
@robpen954 I started because i got Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. but than i liked there 70's stuff. (YES! i'm getting fly by night today!) but than i introduced my friend to rush and he liked there 80's stuff. than he showed me how awesome this stuff is.... still dont really like power windows
This is going to be my song for when the dollar collapses and all hell breaks loose. Marshall law, Fema camps, Police state and eventually cyborgs looking for me with my new RFID chip.
It's actually supposed to be from the perspective of a lone human survivor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland prison camp. However, they drew on the experiences of Geddy's parents in Nazi concentration camps for the proper emotional feel.
@pizzy1969 I'll say one more thing 'cause you're very funny. So, what I see here is that you are judging me on the fact that I listen to some Nickelback. Right?... I'm a douchebag JUST because I do? Well then, I must be one of the greatest then, because you know... I like to listen too some Amon Amarth, some Dimmu Borgir, Children Of Bodom... Just try to say they are douchebag's bands, and a shitload of people will want your head.
Pink Floyd (ie, Roger Waters) wrote many songs addressing the Holocaust. I love the lyrical and musical content of Rush. I am not attempting to detract from them, but other artists have approached the same subject, sometimes to greater depth.
This is a great song. The lyricist (no doubt, Neil Peart) does some deep thinking. He knows something in this world isn't right and that something needs to be done. In due time, Neil, in due time. Their song really do make a person think. I like their music because it ROCKS and I love the lyrics because they aren't all love songs. I get sick of love songs. Rush's songs are about life. Good stuff!
i had to make a slideshow with this song for the holocaust unit we did let me tell u some of the pictures u cant even tell what it is so u cant decide if ur gonna be sick from horror or not...lets just say we hope history doesnt repeat itself

While I was into this song upon it's release, I find it interesting that my appreciation for the music may not be simply nostalgic, as your post intuits it is timeless.

This is going to be my song for when the dollar collapses and all hell breaks loose. Marshall law, Fema camps, Police state and eventually cyborgs looking for me with my new RFID chip.

Nickelback can't hold a candel to RUSH. This is the only song I can think of to address the Holocaust.
bayhorse01 1 year ago 30
@bayhorse01 You need to listen to The Wall.

@bayhorse01
It's actually supposed to be from the perspective of a lone human survivor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland prison camp. However, they drew on the experiences of Geddy's parents in Nazi concentration camps for the proper emotional feel.

@bayhorse01 Never Again by disturbed, good song, i recommend it.

@bayhorse01 EEEEEEEEW! You mentioned Nickelback on a Rush comment board.

(1) Woody Guthrie's 1948 "Ilsa Koch"
(2) Bob Dylan's "With God on Our Side"
(3) Captain Beefheart's 1969 "Dachau Blues"
(4) Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys' 1973 "Ride 'Em Jewboy"
(5) The Indigo Girls' 1994 "This Train Revised"

@pizzy1969 I'll say one more thing 'cause you're very funny. So, what I see here is that you are judging me on the fact that I listen to some Nickelback. Right?... I'm a douchebag JUST because I do? Well then, I must be one of the greatest then, because you know... I like to listen too some Amon Amarth, some Dimmu Borgir, Children Of Bodom... Just try to say they are douchebag's bands, and a shitload of people will want your head.
BTW, Rush rocks

Good stuff!
