  • Amazing. My Dad was an Olds man and I remember as a child all the talk of the Rocket V8. I got into them too but sadly this brand has passed. It's all Jap Crap now.

  • @forestgreen98 I'm glad this car brought back good memories. I have an ad from that period that shows not only the car, but the husband and wife on the back of a rocketship, rocketing somewhere to outer space! They sure were selling rocket V8 power! Thanks! :) Jack

  • My late father had one of this in mint green. It had a push button starter. The car lasted 10 years without problems, and he sold it because he wanted a newer modern style. What a great car. Thanks for posting.

  • @billace90 I'm so glad my video brought back pleasant memories for you...it's something I have always believed. Cars are a great memory trigger! Thanks!

    :) Jack

  • Hey Jack, this was a great car. I think these were some of the quickest cars of the day with that rocket V-8, setting off the horsepower war of the 50's. I like this one because it's a 2 door hardtop.

  • @MrLambFries Hey, Brian! They certainly were quick...Cadillac had a similar performer in their new OHV V8, and Hudson with its twin carbureted flathead 6 was a speed merchant! Olds was an overnight hit..and the Hydramatic didn't hurt it either! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Beautiful looking car. I love the semi circular speedometer and analogue gauges, instead of the stupid idiot lights that would come to be standard on later cars. Is this car original and unrestored or has it been restored? It looks quite original.

  • @Seattlecarnut Yeah, those "idiot lights" were strongly criticized when they started replacing oil pressure and amp gauges in the 50's. Gauges had been the standard before that. I don't know for sure, but I believe this car to be original unrestored. Thanks! :) Jack

  • @raconter1 Idiot lights are fine if used with the gauges, but by themselves don't tell you how hot the engine is or how cold it is, etc. I love original and unrestored cars.

  • @Seattlecarnut Hey, Jason! Indeed, that's the best of both worlds...a light to get your attention, and a gauge for precise measurement. However, the "idiot" lights were really replacements for gauges...so many owners add supplemental gauges on their own..a great compromise in my book! The problem with gauges..how many actually look at them on a consistent basis...best paired with an overall warning light that indicates a system is amiss. Thanks! :) Jack

  • @raconter1 I totally agree.

  • So I'm guessing this Olds has an Flat-Head V8? Or is it an early OHV V8?

  • @Sarcasticscum Hey, Nathan! This one had the OHV V8. The last year for the flathead 8 was 1948. The flathead 6 was used in the 1949 model 76, while the OHV V8 was used in the 88 and 98 models. Cadillac introduced their similar but more powerful V8 in 1949 as well. Both were known for their "oversquare", short stroke big bore design. The bore was bigger than the stroke. Thanks! :) Jack

  • I like all cars but fifties cars are always among my favoriets. I always like those 3-piece rear windows. (before they made one piece windoes. ) Thanks Jack.

  • @55lincoln Hey, Warren! Yeah...I love those 3 piece windows too..they were such a change from the flat rectangles that graced so many cars for years...and they gave a panoramic view to the rear, to match the increased visibility up front! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Beautiful, I absolutely love 50's dash boards, they're fantastic, and the hood ornaments were proper hood ornaments too :D ... Absolutely beautiful !

  • @drewerz01 Hey, Mike! The dashboards were simple at this point, complete with real gauges, and had a fair amount of chrome and were the product of a styling exercise! And each make, although they might use the same body shell as another, would have a unique instrument panel. This sure contributed to the individual identity of the make. Thanks! :) Jack

  • 1950 Oldsmobile Futuramic 88 – it’s a Rocket 88 with Hydramatic. I love the names that they came up with and I also love the look of this apparently flawless hardtop. In 49 the hardtop was exclusive to the 98 so this would be the first year for a hardtop in an 88. I liked the seat height in that era and these seats do look nice and comfortable.

  • @cheddyrod Hey, Chester! Indeed...don't those names suggest this car was of the FUTURE! All others (at least non GM makes) would be left behind! These, after all, were rocketships! Indeed...the seats were quite high on these models...and well padded, and used foam cushions. The only thing missing was the tilting back to the seat..it would take Detroit some years to make that universally present! Thanks! :) Jack

  • That is a real classic....just a beautiful car. I really like the visor over the windshield.

  • @RamblinAround Hey, Jeff! It sure is a classic! Those visors were very practical accessories. They were fairly common back in the day! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Very nice 88, Jack! I really like the tailight and rear end design. Thanks for sharing!

  • @jojocats2 Hey, John! Yes indeed...the tailight assembly can be seen as a modified fin...and I always liked the planet surrounded by the ring..suggesting an Olds was orbiting the Earth? Interesting to contemplate! Thanks! :) Jack

  • this is an beautiful restored car and love the head light style

  • @zanjani13 Hey, Jon! Yeah, Olds was one of the first to meaningfully combine the headlamps with the parking lights in an assembly that had some style! Great designers, back then! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Hi Jack. I had a '49 98 Olds when I was in high school. Looked alot like this only a 4 door. Light blue on the bottom and dark blue on top. Same dash and fins. Same grill.

Thanks for sharing this one. Very good choice.

  • @bimjales Hey, Jim! My cousin had a 49 fastback...I was in awe! What a car! It was the first time I'd seen hydramatic close up, and the pushbutton actuated windshield washers intrigued me...I would have given anything to have one of these gems! Thanks! :) Jack
