I saw these dudes in Denver in 1990. That was the most acid I ever did, 40 hits of blotter that night, but my tolerence was so high I barely got off. lol They had some skinhead dude attached to a cable with some harness around his waste and were kinda raising and lowering him. The show lasted about 10 minutes, and the cops came in and shut the whole thing down cause it was too loud. I remember the look on the cops face, like, "what a bunch of pathetic art school losers."
Saw them in Seattle at the Weathered Wall in '95 (or thereabouts) and at Moes the following year. Blew my mind and body away both times. Still wonder sometimes if it was real.
I worked at the Che Cafe from 1986-89. Saw every gig they played there and around San Diego. Even went to their shows up at the Commotion in SF. Truly nothing like them. Mind transforming experience!
WOW! Talk about great memories. I was in Atlanta around Easter of 94 and ended up with writhing on the floor with a bunch a half naked people and someone in a bunny suit...The next year they played the Masquerade in Atlanta. Drumming, strobes, fire, flour, nakedness, and flaming deer head on a chain. It was completely surreal. My best friend got hit in the nuts with a flaming deer head, hehehe. Then the Fire Marshall showed up and we had to leave. Best time I almost died, ever.
Holy shit! I saw CW a couple times in Chicago in the early 90s. First time was in a loft near Bridgeport, the other time in an art studio on south State st. Un-fucking-believeable, especially the first show-fire, bags of wine, fireworks, naked people dancing. Me and my bro lost our shirts and ended up covered in body paint. I remember leaving when it was over and feeling stunned and ancient and high-HIGH! I've been to hundreds of live performances and these guys top the list.
ADRV. One of the essential underlooked units of let alone the 90's but of all time. They gave to you where most if not all bands these daze take from you. If you arse a fan than see what become of them. The 9th ward marching band and the Extra Action Marching Band. Nothing will exist like what it was for a while. But so is Temporary Autonomous Zones. Meant to BE not to LAST. Be happy you got to be a part of it if you experienced it at all.
I only saw them a few times but it was like a scary dream. Fucking awesome. But it reminds me of how boring and conservative this world is. Few bands do adventurous shit. I'm kind of sad watching this.
Reminds me of a band from Baltimore with a similar multiple drummer/percussionist line-up called Monkeyspank back in the late '80's early '90's. They used to double shows with All Mighty Senators.
Wow, does this ever bring back memories! I went to at least a couple dozen shows back in the day, like deadheads we would travel to see them wherever they were playing. There never will be anything like it again, and I feel blessed to have been in the time and space to allow me to be present when they were touring.
You weren't the only one who did that... for a couple of years my friends and I traveled all around the country to see them. Think the nostalgia will kill me one of these days...
seems like they are putting together a documentary or something. check out their myspace - crashworship and give them photos and videos if you got them. i followed them around for 2 years and saw about 20+ shows. from junkyards to backyards to some field in the middle of nowhere texas. best years of my life.
Simon from CW does a thing in San Francisco called The Extra Action Marching Band. Similar in spirit to Crash Worship (with a lot of horns and a big New Orleans vibe) but nowhere near as extreme. It's like a Crash Worship show you can take your parents to.
Crash Worship, an experience I will never forget. I will always be thankful for the viseral memories embedded in me from the hours spent throbbing in that slippery crowd. Thank you for this window. Hmm.
I saw them in Berkley and was transformed It was incredible. Without a doubt one of the most powerful shows I've ever seen. I felt like I was a part of somthing bigger and older than myself.
I went to a few crash worship shows, three in Houston, one outdoor show outside Austin, and one were it was more of a riot through the streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras that ended with lines of police in riot gear. They stayed at my house in Houston - I was afraid after going to the shows, but they were gracious house guest - all 20 of them:) It is impossible to describe to people that never saw them - don't you think?
I toured with Crash Worship on and off for ten years. There never was and never will be anything like them. The most cathartic rock and roll experience ever.
Was anyone at the show at the old Mercury Cafe when someone grabbed the torch on a rope and caught part of the ceiling on fire?! I heard that was the end of "alternative" shows at he Merc. Just a few of the memories pressed between the pages of our lives./breaks into setimental easy listening melody. Ah.. the wine and smell of ash..fun chaos folks.
Saw crash wWorship in Phoenix at Ice House back in 92-93. Excellent performance. lots of skin, Huge swinging cage in the center of the space. Lost all my clothes and had to walk home almost naked...was worth it.
I was at that show. They had alot of cool stuff there, the guy with all the drums, fifty plus feet in the air. That was the first cd I ever bought too. I wonder, if anyone knows if they got their name from Mad Max Beyond thunderdome, the tribe of children who worshipped the airplane that crashed.
Great post... I saw them 5 or 6 times with between 25 and 250 in attendence. This really brings it back. They themselves made a video that was released on their own Alarma! label. Somewhere in my boxes I also have a full concert shot with multiple cameras at a junk yard show... Gee- what ever happened to Paul and the We Never Sleep folks? On a beach in the south of France I hope... *cheers*
I saw Crash Worship around this time in NYC and it was the most tribalistic show I have ever seen to this day. The wine skin they were passing around... the oil drum they had filled with burning wood in the center of the floor (couldn't believe they got away with that)... It was incredible. Without a doubt one of the most powerful shows I've ever seen.
If anyone has anymore Crash Worship videos I'd love to see them. A guy I worked with raved about them and I've been collecting all the info I can on them. Hell if anyone wants to message me about them, feel free, I know basically nothing (Just what my friend told me) but would love to hear stories.
OMG! It's like the ONLY CW video in existence! Must be archived! Anyone have Quintron And CW in NewOrleans in 95? I was there!! Oh the Chaos!! Extacy!! And Austin and Norman and Atlanta.. Where have all the bad times gone?!
I have 2 other videos. I just need to find a way to digitize them. One is a promo tape they gave out to promoters from a Detroit show and the other is the Inflamatorio! video. Working on it!
They were sooo sooooo bad asssss!!!...and the best thing about the shows were that the audience was just as important as what was going on with the band. B.T.W....>Does anyone know how to get ahold of Marcus??? I'd love to reconnect somehow.
Holy shit ! This brought back memories for me too! haha I live in Denver and there was this one show in the Azalan Theater where it was absoloutly insane. Hell on earth, but the funnest hell around. Any other video's post them !
do you speak of the new years show that ended up out on sante fe street and the flaming chariot bicycle? Cops everywhere? way way fun. Great times in Denver.
