The AI isn't THAT bad, they keep getting left behind because you are outrunning them and they can't see you so they just wait. You should stop running around so much when you have followers without sufficient speed training like yourself. I'm not saying that the AI is good, it really does suck but if you take your time more (and stop dashing away from followers when they say 'I'm exhausted) you can avoid losing people.

Ha! I love that this old farmer has assault weapons experience up the wazoo.

They really should at least put the relative location of all your allies on the compass bar. Of course, the best thing would be to have better pathfinding.

One thing you might try to conserve ammo while on supply runs is to find a relatively safe area (in a house or something) near the extraction point, tell your allies to guard, then do the mission yourself. Just return to the safehouse when you have too much stuff in your inventory then go out again. Effectively, you just turn your NPC allies into pack mules while you actually do the scrounging.

Of course, you do lose out on their amazing searching abilities.
