  • why the hell is using a claw hammer not a ball pine

  • Thanks bro

  • I'm having issues getting my caps off right now as we speak. The S.O.B. wont come off! how in gods name do they come off? it doesnt make sense to keep pounding them forward when they cant go any more forward! i dont understand the concept of that lol.yeah,i need help.

  • Excellent video, well done. I would offer the PSA that using a socket as a driving tool will eventually damage the socket, especially when used with an extension in it. If you don't have a press and absolutely must use a socket, do so without the extension bar so the internal partition of the socket is not stressed.

  • Nice thank you

  • i have a question i am hearing some weird popping noise from my rear end and im driveing a lifted chevy truck and when i get underneath the ubolts are tight and have been torqued, i even bought 70dollar ones the 5/8s bolts to really hold it down back therebut still hearing it when i turn slowly or drive through a parking lot at slow speeds also upon inspection i saw two of the bolts on the universal joint are scraping against the drive shaft, there are 4bolts and only 2 do it what causes this

  • Great job. Just the way I do it. The hardest part is keeping the needle bearings clean and upright. If you have good hands and move quickly you might get it done!

  • He does make good videos. just that introduction is funny in my opinion. =) Happy days

  • In this video!!! I am a robot. I am here to take over the world and make you my slave!!!!

  • I took an angle grinder to my driveshaft because it was so rusty. LOL

  • hes a cool hippy mechanic prime example: "LOVE TAPS"

  • You may also want to use a vice, to help keep the caps stright when pressing them over the u-joint shaft. Because if one of the needle bearings fall out in this process you are screwed.

  • Thank you for posting this video. It has been about 20 years since I replaced a U-Joint and I forgot half of the methods this guy uses. This video saved me a lot of hassle by not making stupid mistakes. Thanks again!

  • i like how this guy explains his methods. he is using tools the average Joe would be using. who cares what kind of hammer he is using honestly or if he is using a socket to push the cups down. its a good vid for anyone to understand.

  • this video is great i used it to replace my u joints on my 05 chevy colorado z71 4x4 and i had no idea what i was doin. this video showed me. if there is more of these videos by this guy someone please let me know i dont know his name to look for. thanx dude

  • Its funny that they're using a Ford Explorer... cause i've had to replace 2 U joints in 1 year on my 98'

  • Great Job and thanks "ExpertVillage" 4 the info..Im gona do my U-Joints tomorrow and Im confident thanks to this video!!!!

  • Awesome stuff and your speech is perfect for teaching and instructing btw.

  • alot of expert village doesn't know what there doing but this guy does lol

  • This site rocks. Thanks to everybody behind it. Couldn't have done my truck without this. Mahalo!

  • grand job thumbs up

  • I had to skip past the scrapping with that pick. Gave me serious chills.

  • @griffithd05 I agree!!!

  • @griffithd05 same here dude

  • @griffithd05 Seriously.

  • I like this guy. Old school, but nice attention to detail. Besides it looks like he is working out of the back of a truck, extra style points for that.

Dude has nothing to fear during the upcoming zombie apocalypse.

  • I like this guy. Old school, but nice attention to detail. Besides it looks like he is working out of the back of a truck, extra style points for that.

  • muy buena la explicacion ahora ya secambiar una cruseta, tnk.

  • Very similar to my u joint video. Nice job.

  • A great video as always Keep it up

  • Be careful. And never smoke U joints

  • @Jerkwaad -That's sooo corny that I had to reply.

  • @Jerkwaad Only "J" Joints

  • looks like i have grease oozing out of my factory u joints, does this mean they are going bad.

  • NOTE: For people watching this video, do not hit the caps in the ears of the driveshaft, thos neadle bearing can fall out doing it like that. Instead use the socket he had and put it in the press and clamp it squezing into the postion.

Its not that you can't do it that way you just might be the lucky one that knocks the needle bearings out. Thanks for the cool video man rock on dude.

  • l need help guys, l have an Outlander 2003 at 122k miles and it started making Clunk noise from the back when accelerating. Do you think it is the U joint? l live in Grand Cayman and mechanics here suck so l will try to do it myself.

  • @onrinl wheel bearing , not hard to do just push mout the old one and press the new one into the hub. but thats the noise, or its the drive axle about to break where it pivots. good luck.

  • I agree with the Alaskaman, Nate is doing the work and going through the effort of being helpful. I do not agree with Nate's use of sockets and extension bars as driving tools. I also do not agree with Nate's constant mantra of "Proper Service Procedure". Overall, I am most impressed by the proactivity of Nate to record, upload and share. Now that, is demonstrating Leadership.

  • Just like so...actually just like so haha

  • "Love taps" giggity giggity gooo!

  • I like the THOR method better.

  • How long was that drive shaft on the ocean floor?

  • @briansmobile1 take it you dont know what rust is....

  • @drakeguy22 They salt the roads here too. lol We prefer to call it Cancer here.

  • @briansmobile1 ah yes... we all love salted roads....

  • @drakeguy22 Some times I wonder what's more expensive- the damage and loss to body work and mechanical repairs due to salt, or collisions from not using salt... Cars are pretty safe in a crash, but the salt gives people a false sense of security and so they drive faster than they should and don't buy snow tires etc too.

  • @briansmobile1 personally i liked when the road was just sanded.... i buy snow tires or really aggressive all terrains and ive never had a problem in the snow, nor should anyone else.... STOP THE SALT

  • @drakeguy22 DOWN WITH SALT FOREVER!!! I ride on 35" Toyo Mudders. Snow problem?... S'-no problem. My wife drives a 4X4 Subaru wagon... we have adapted and we're cool.

  • AWesome i got all tose tools!!

really great video BUT you should use Rubber hammer...(i think)

  • I would like to thank Nathan and expertvillage for saving me nearly $200 with this great video series. This was a huge help since I'm kinda handy but by no means a car guy. For the haters - I'm sure if you put up a video you'd get bashed as well. If you're so F'n smart why don't you spend your time helping people instead of ripping on others.

  • "Go ahead and give it a squeeze and pop it in the hole" HAHAHA

  • @yodwinder That's what she said...

  • OK, So the snappering is what holds it in place? I might attemp this....

  • So why are all the videos on replacing the rear U joint. Don't you ever have to replace the front one? Shouldn't you replace it just cause you already have the drive shaft out? I'm about to tackle this job on my '64 Cutlass and wondering if there is any reason NOT to change the front one.

    By the way, nice video.

  • @DanDeVideoMan The rear takes a lot more abuse than the front.... i would replace both and it may not be necessary but gives you a little peace of mind.

  • 1994 f150 shifting into reverse makes a clunk and I can feel a jerk. Is it the U joint? 180,000 miles on the truck. The transmission shifts a little roughly into 2nd gear too. I'm going to do a complete fluid change and put a new filter in it. I just drained the pan and added 7 quarts of fluid but the problem is still there so complete drain and refill then u join. What you guys think? Truck has no trouble codes.

  • thanks for the videos very very helpful!!

  • A claw hammer? Hahahaha

  • need rear info replacing it

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for posting video man!

  • 3 ways to do this - with a press and someone hold the shaft in the air but using sockets as cups, with a balljoint press (looks like a big C clamp) or the way shown here. I've done gobs of universal joints, all three ways, and this method has been used for decades with good results. Only thing I do differently is I use a large ball peen hammer (the flat side) I call my BFH and I run some extra grease inside the cups over the needle bearings to hold them better. Alaskaman you are totally right.

  • Good video!

  • This guy truly is an idiot ! I would like to have watched the mutilation during the disassembly procedure he conveniently left out. The u-joint is centered so well it will barely move after he is done. Keep up the good work and remember to keep smashing the clip groove against the vise. Dork stick !

  • Thanks for the vid.

  • Thank you, I was stumped but with your video, I had no problem, thank you once again

  • i hear ya dude , hell thats how we become ASE techs , is from being shade tree first

  • USE A TIGER TOOL!!!

  • What a hack!!!!

  • excellent! Thank you! will be doing my '95 explorer today.

  • I think the video is great, showing those in tough times how to get the job done with limited tools and money, Like myself. I just needed a lil refresher and with that, my truck will be driving smoothly down the highway after this weekend.

    Thank you!

  • You want to know what? Fuck all the people bashing this dude and this video. He fixes things keeping in mind that some people don't have the tools and space necessary to perform repairs ideally. Besides, if these assholes know so much, why the fuck are they watching this video?.....Great job, expertvillage.

  • @alaskaman73 Well Said.

  • @alaskaman73 Seriously, people should stop being fucking assholes

  • @alaskaman73 If he is a mechanic why is he using a claw hammer? Aren't they used by carpenters?

  • hey man good job. i needed this video. i have that problem and now i know how to fix it. again, good video.

  • To cwelkcumman:

get a life you frigging doorknob.

  • he didn't use a bench so you it could be see by the viewer, that's why he not using a bench

  • You have a great instructional video. You may find that most (not all) parts at Autozone are garbage. But your video shows how to get the job done.

  • i remember a road trip i had one fail i used the hammer method ROFL i busted one cap had to make do with an old cap it ended up being the flat tie straps on 1990 chevy truck would let the caps fling out..(but that trouble was a crappy u-joint broke at zerk fitting...i`d suggest ones without grease fittings)

  • dude get a press or atleast use a ball peen hammer not a carpenters hammer your not doing wood work

  • Did what he did work?

    Is it together?

Did it matter how he did it?

  • nice video,do u have one where i shows them how to heat up the plastice keeper to get it out ,and i know u know that the auto zone joints are junk and dont last, good video!

  • thanks for da video its very helpful, can you make some about dodge durango's

  • Good how to, thanks!

  • In every video this guy makes he says "In this clip' The same stupid way. *mocking his voice* INNN this clip....*

  • Hey thanks dude for taking the time to explain this technique, helped me out. i knew what to do but havent done any for years, f in mechanic wants 75.00 an hour no way.

  • I'm sorry that the world disturbs you in such a way. Your life must be a living hell.

  • I really appreciate that you feel that way. but there is no reason for you to be sorry for me.

  • Okay, I'm sorry for feeling sorry for you.

I just really dig people. Especially when they have a quirk. Quirks are interesting.

  • Nicely done. Thanks for posting this.

  • Thanks man this really helped me out!

  • Typical backyard mechanic I'd say, we even got 'em in this country! Call's 'em "Love taps" then strikes a precision bearing with a naked steel hammer! The arrogance speaks for itself really

  • All you that whine about how you dislike these videos should do something about it. Make your own damn videos that show the 'proper' way to do things. I'm the novice type that was just misinformed. I just replaced a passenger side u joint using a bfh and steel weight as an anvil. Turned out fine after the long battle with rusty bits of jeep everywhere. Furthermore, I was sitting on a milk crate wishing I had a damn hydraulic press so i could mash the ears of the yolk together.

    Cheers.

  • I don't like these videos, I don't like the hack instructions, I don't like the milk crate, and I don't like the way this dude is always taking close-ups of his package.

  • then stop watching them, it's really that simple.

  • What a dork!

  • What a chronic complainer, just another youtube bitch who only leaves negative comments and acts tough hiding behind their computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You are the one complaining about someon else's complaining. Haha! You get your comments, I get mine.

  • @chompychomps what are you saying?! the close-ups of his package are the only redeeming parts of this video.

"INNNN THIS CLIP.. I'LL BE DOING EXTREME CLOSE-UPS ON MY JUNK."

  • @chompychomps I wasn't looking at his package, i was looking at the u-joint.

  • i hate how expertvillage seperates all their clips to be short. wtf is the point of that?

  • probably. and they would spam this comment just so others dont see it. I dont watch expert village anymore just because of that..

  • HDGuy is right. A press, big vise, or specially made tool that looks like a big C-clamp are the way to go for install. But!!! if you have access to dry ice you can use it instead. Check the grease then put the u-joint into a cooler with dry ice for a while. With welder's gloves or similar you can then slip the new u-join in with no force at all.

  • First off it's not called a saddle, It's called a yoke.. Second for you beginners never use a hammer,,, Use a press of some sort. This guy just showed you the wrong way how to install a ujoint.

  • you should probably use a stiff rubber mallet for seating the caps...

"a couple of love taps... BASH BASH BASH BASH BASH BASH BASH!!!

  • See all 138990 videos FUCK THAT!

  • hello everyone

  • At 1:48 ....A Couple Love Taps....LMFAOOO

  • Shit - that driveshaft don't look too hot either........

  • Its from a ford exploder. What do you expect.

  • I drive a 63 Galaxie and wouldn't even step foot in an Explorer. I did have an Expedtion once though until Ford came late at night and took it away from me for not making the payments....welcome to the new U.S. economy !!!

  • iiiiiin this step..... LMAO

  • Too bad he used inferior Autozone Ujoints.

  • good video, too bad my 81 vette has 6 of these things!!!

  • i fucked mine up T THE TRACK LOL SO HOW DO I REMOVE IT?

  • :37-1:00 not a pretty sound!!

  • just replaced one one a chevy silverado

  • Thank you for posting this video, it is very helpful.

  • how do u know? or when do you replace a u jonit

  • You will usually hear a crunching/grinding sound coming from the back of your car.

  • Or you hear like squeeling from down by the drive shafts

  • 4:17-4:20 Thats what she said

  • loser

  • LOL

  • HAHAHA good one

  • that dirve shaft is so rusted im suprised it has no cracks yet

  • just changed one today, and the only way i could explain what i done to my 14 y/o son who was not here at the time was with this video.

    Thanx!
