This is quite a deep song if you check the lyrics out. Typical Ricky, always going right for the gut. I love this song, I might just have to use it in poetry class!
Personally I think the reason they didn't make it big was because they sounded so DIFFERENT...seriously this sounds like a 90s song or maybe even newer...haha Ricky Gervais is a genius entertainer.
@master0monster damn, wont let me send even a broken down version of the link. just google video to mp3 and you should find sites that'll let you turn the video into a downloadable file for free.
Some of the lyrics are a bit clumsy and the delivery in the beginning a bit shaky, but the epic chorus and outro are actually genuinely quite moving. Its a shame with better production this could be a brilliant song.
@emperorglenuff Put more effects on it and begin the song with a 3 minute guitar solo and you've got a Cure song. I'm saying that as a fan of The Cure.
That's it! This is the next Gervais/Merchant creation! Fortysomething washed up entertainer (haha) tries to recapture the magic from his band days...only by the end it actually turns out to be BRILLIANT...you know, in that typical Gervais/Merchant poignant way.
Kinda like a Napoleon Dynamite meets Little Voice.
hell, makes you think whats the music business really is made of... these guys were obvious talented as musicians. In this case it turn out ok for ricky.
The melody that kicks in at 1:13 combined with ricky's vocals really brings this song alive.... Really suprised how good it is from there, Very Emotional and atmospheric. Ricky certainly has a penchant for quality in all forms of art and media.
l could imagine this in a Michael Mann film....you know for one of his dramatic scenes where everyone looks sullen and says very little. Fits the period perfectly.
Very 80's: could have been a Human League song or a less version of Bowie. He somehow looks totally different, and I am not even referring to the fact he has gained weight.

The chubby sarcastic version is taking revenge on us for not letting him be famous for being the beautiful, sincere one. He tried to be famous and failed, and now he is trying to destroy fame out of what we call sour grapes.
say what you want about him, but hes famous in his own right and hes earned it, i think your the sour one good fellow since you seem too be be bitter at someone who is genuinly more talented than you

Do you honestly think Jim Carrey is witty? I'm a fan of both Jim Carrey and Ricky Gervais, but Ricky is far more witty, agree with the podcast comment, Gervais is highly intelligent with a more reserved and dry sense of humour. Jim carrey needs a setting and story behind his comedy, and resorts to making big and silly actions, but don't get me wrong i love him for it!
Im noyl going by what i saw of carey on johnathan ross really! he came across so sharp and funny. Maybe im wrong about ricky then, or maybe both our ideas of quick witted humour is totally different : ) peace !!
