  • Love Demme videos - so dramatic!

Check out the one he did for The Perfect Kiss - it's amazing.

  • I heard this song fairly recently on the radio, and fell in love with it.

  • Mark is great on the guitar.

  • she be rockin !

  • damn this video just oozes Jonathan Demme...you can spot all kinds style cues from his Silence of The Lambs

  • Suzanne Vega rules!

  • I agree

  • This lady's music is timeless!

  • wtf, these damn commercials before videos are annoying. as if pop-up advertisements aren't irritating enough. Google is screwing up youtube.

    Great song.

  • Every time I hear any of her songs, it takes my breath away. Her voice is gorgeous, but it's her words that just... wow.

  • beautifull..........

  • Somehow this doesnt even look funny like usually these times vid are. Great absolutely great

  • ...bella...

  • So good and not just for nostalgic reasons. I'm going to have to rediscover Suzanne Vega.

  • super catchy =)

  • I hope she does a concert in NYC soon

    ~SH

  • So deep! ...and some say 1980's music was all about image and not meaning. Love you Suzanne and I thank god that I lived through the 80's! I was 10 in 1981, 18 in 1989. Great times!

  • One of my first childhood crushes... I'd LOVE to meet her. She's so poetic and soulful.

  • "I'd LOVE to meet her."

You really should meet her. She's an incredible person in the flesh.

  • just found this one and it's great

  • Wow, she could really dance!

  • I only saw this video once on MTV back in 1987 back when they actually played music videos.

  • Great lyrics!!! Great singing!!! Great video!!!

  • Genius just won't die. Lucky us.

  • pure beauty are her songs

  • This song, and this album helped me get through my troubled teenage years. I was so in love with her music back then. It's all so beautiful. Seeing this video for me is like looking into a window to the past. Thank you for that.

  • Suzanne Vega is music and poetry in motion.....!!!

  • Suzanne I love you! ^^

When I was 14 or 15 I write you a letter and you answered me with a postcard. I still have that postcard! :)

    Thank you!

  • wrote

  • Suzanne Vega is very pretty! :)

  • I love how everyone else seems to be as befuddled as I am. Mullets? Was it really that long ago?

  • 1990... you can decide if that's 'long ago' or not

  • Actually, as of next year that is twenty years ago considering it feels like yesterday, yeah I would say that's awhile ago.

  • i thought mullots were out by 1990?

  • Nice song and video!

  • I looove this song so much, and the vibe of suzanne's music is so smooth, and comforting to me...beautiful...PERIOD.

  • Totallt irrelevant, but I LOVE Suzanne's hair short. It really suits her.

  • too bad that the video doesn't match the song's brillance.

  • This album came out in 1987 and so did the video.

  • Great song, fantastica!!! LOVE IT

  • DOES SHE STILL PERFORM?

  • Yes.

  • Yes, go to her main website. It lists her tour dates and show appearances.

  • i should say that solitude standing made suzanne vega not to metion her talent beauty and hit my bloody heart like an arrow suzanne marry me eyal

  • Im glad there is wide appreciation for this song in the comments.

This song means a lot to me.

  • This song is SOOO AMAZING!!! It's laid back, smooth and yet funky at the same time!!! Incredible!!

  • the intro to this song is some top notch shit.

perfect lyrics totally live up to the amazingness of the intro......

  • i really LOVE this song~! i got the album :) since high school!

  • shez.... beautiful !

  • she has the beauty of audry hepbern and Julie Andrews.

  • Great artist that paints a mental picture.

GO and look to see her live!

  • One of the best written, arranged, performed and produced albums in history! That' my opinion.I don't care about video you loons,go to the movies or MTV, the bottom line is THE MUSIC DAMMIT!

    Suzanne please marry me!

  • I wish I was married to her!

  • brought tears to my eyes.rare song.and that's a shame.

  • Can you imagine anyone else or any other band doing this song? No...thats why Suzanne Vega is so unique. Truly an original not to be copied. I agree the video sucks and does not come close to doing the song justice.

  • She's timeless, the band so dated.

  • I suppose you can't go out of fashion if you were never in it. Suzanne Vega always charted her own course. It would be a dull world if everyone were a slave to fashion.

  • The band dated?? Brilliant studio cats like they are, it's their job to stay up to date, what's more this band had lots to do with enhancing Suzannes brilliance and success.

Keep in mind, these songs are not new.

Because they are so good, and the record buying public is so green may account for the unfortunate fact that she has been abandoned yet definately and thankfully not forgotten.

  • Somehow, the song haunted me...the looping keyboard, the weight, the easy foreboding.

  • amazing performance!!!!

  • woah, what a beautiful song! I didn´t know it before...It´s very very pleasant and exciting!

  • I really remember all of this song from when I lived in Ankara... working at the Royal Netherlands Embassy. 1987-1988, long forgotten.

  • just as good live

  • simply quality.

  • She was never so good later like at that times. Great song and the whole album.

  • That's so not true. Look at the Songs in Red and Gray album...

  • Mark on electric guitar - excellent!

  • I loved this 20 years ago. She has such a touch

  • Steve Ferreira on drums The fellow who played on the record. Michael Veseglia on bass The others i don't know

  • Suzanne Vega: Perfect 10 Artist ! ! !

  • terry bozzio behind the drum kit!

    that's effin sick!

  • No effing wonder I like this song! Been a fan of Bozzio/Karn/Japan fan since 1981! What a great link to have found.

  • I don't mind the video, bit odd but the song is wonderful.

Vega's imagery is so strong that you listen to this song in pictures

  • 懐かしい!無垢な少女のような声、風のように人と人の間をすり抜け、人の心を垣間見る...そんな都会の孤独な楽しみ.....。

  • This video is a train wreck. Why are they moving around so much?......Suzanne Vega is the best lyricist ever.

  • that's called the "early 90s light rock dance". once you know what to look for, you'll see it in most early 90s videos. it's hilarious, really.

seriously though...who the hell are those guys? GTFO my suzanne vega video!

  • Yes, I know how old the music is, but still I don't think its any excuse for the video. It'd be better with no video at all. I feel sorry for Suzanne since I think it's fairly obvious that the record company must have forced this monstrosity on her. Does anyone know of any Vega videos that look like she might have approved of them? Let me know.

  • Yeah, may they forced her to do this m/v, but still that doesn't make this m/v awful. It was '90 m/v, and quite a great quality back then. And I see this m/v was made by high quality of filming directing and editing directing. You should not laugh at old stuff, because you are living present!

And you know what? I agree this m/v look awful right now, but I can't stand on what you're saying things awful.

  • She was originally a dancer, so I;m guessing the dancing parts were her idea. I think the video is okay - it may have been rushed for some reason

  • My god. I've always loved this song but this video is atrocious! 30 seconds passed before I realised it wasn't a parody.

  • No, it's not that bad. It was made in '90, and this song was released in '87! You must knew how old singer Suzanne Vega is.

  • And you know what? You just don't know what you are talking about.

  • she is one of the best songwriters today.

  • I love the words in the song "she turns to me with her hand extended, palm is split with a flower with a flame."

  • the guitarist looks commited.

  • if i may quote lou reed,i call this songwriter supreme.

  • Gorgeous song. Love the sound (so moody and yet loads of punch) on this song. I saw her in london circa 1988 and was entranced by the music. It wasn't exactly a "performance" she just stood there and did her stuff but I loved it.

  • Far much worse than her Solitude Standing way back there - In 1987? She's not Solitude Now. Luka is more sincere. I love Suzanne too - and wish her Solitude actually breaks and she finds her only one.

  • This song is better than Luka. I wish I could be with Suzanne Vega just for 24 hours... then I'd be pleased forever...

  • you can dude just buy her cd!

  • I have three of her Cd's. But what I meant was a personal 24-hour get-togheter, you know.

  • her eyes are just....jdhfjuhdsgushdguhg! No words to describe.

  • Great, you just described it perfectly :P

  • One of Suzanne's best songs, which is really saying a lot considering her amazing body of work.

The video captures 80's music video corniness to the extreme, but her haunting and restrained presence almost makes you forget about the overzealous band members. And you gotta love those pirouettes.

  • I bet each guy in the band is looking at this video now, and they are truly embarrassed at the way they looked (and moved) back then. But awesome song, and I love SV.

  • I apologize to Suzanne if one of the band members is her baby daddy, but they are some corny looking mofos! Suzanne looks cool as always though. Great song.

  • the moves aren't great but the musical parts are so intelligently written it's ridiculous. These days people move "cool" but the music is moronic and shallow.

  • been a long time fan!

  • I love this song. I would say something about the MV because my perception was far different from what it would be but then I have to remind myself that the MVs that we are accustomed to are recent and during this period movie like MVs were quite rare or uncommon.

  • lovely!!

  • Great - Vega is a true original, compelling music and highly articulate, meaningful lyrics - love it, love it, love it. Nice 1980's fashion statements too (tee hee):) What the heck...SV is way cool for any decade.

  • Yea, she really is one of THEE great lyricists...along with Paul Simon, etc

When she is good (like here, in "Solitude Standing"), she is about as good as Pop music gets.

  • listen you all suzanne is one of akind good rythem and i would love to hold her in my arms but she allready taken by some whimp

  • Hey guys, how about sticking to comments about the song and the vid?

  • This song always makes me crazy... I mean I always have this weird feeling like I want to scream or something.... I like the song^^...

  • Pehli Baar Milay hein ( Sajan, 1992)

    see this

  • Jason Radley, hey you dullard, what kind of worthless cunt are you

  • Worth at least a reply from you, dimbulb.

  • This video is actually pretty cool.

  • yeah

  • She's not dead. Is that supposed to be funny?

  • She just performed in Australia. Don't be a smart ass.. joking about AIDS isn't cool.

  • Well considering that AIDS represents one of the greatest frauds perpetrated on mankind, you're arguably correct.

  • You are an absolute moron JasonRadley.

  • And I love you too. But the heterosexual AIDS hoax is dying. Roll on the global warming one to replace it.

  • It is not true, you've got fake informations, I'm going to her concert in July, she is going to come to Poland:)

  • no that was your mother :O))

  • Wow..

I've been a Suzanne Vega fan ever since I was old enough to be able to work a record player, but I'd never seen this video.

It's amazing how much 80's they were able to fit in to every frame!

But then her voice and gaze just transfix me to the point where I can't even notice the mullets :)

  • See her eyes? Solid pools of longing and staring ...

  • Videos were crap in these days... but the songs were great!!!!

  • this song actually made the top 40 in 1987. we need more songs like it.

  • this video is so bad- but the song is great

  • Prob cost $1000 to make, unlike others that cost half or a million!!

  • she looks a bit like me, but my hair isn't that short. lol

  • lucky

  • lol thx.

  • I'd marry her tomorrow.

  • wow this is a great performance...

  • her songs are so timeless!

  • search 'Pehli Baar Milay Hein'

  • It comes to want to hear it when losing sight of me.

    Suzanne's world is comfortable.

  • Solitude.... can truly stand.....

but only sound.... can bring it to life.....

  • She's one of my all time favourites. My mum used to play me her songs when I was a little child. I can't remember much from those times but I know I used to love her, as much as I love her now. Especially this song, it makes my back shiver. I went to see her a couple of months ago and she was still amazing, I recommend you to buy tickets! She encored like 1,000 times! Her basist, Mike Visceglia, was also mind-blowing, and Blood Makes Noise on bass sounded fantastic.

  • I love this song. I also like to distort it in my record player down to a lower and slower level until Suzanne's voice starts sounding like Nico's.

  • i remember when i got this album and I loved every single song in it!

  • Sorry, but my english language is very poor,i want only leave a: BEAUTIFULL!!!!!!

  • she resembles Megan Mccommick from Lonely Planet. My fav traveller!

  • Excellent as ever when it comes to Suzanne Vega, besides, this video takes us back in the 80's, it's cool :)

    Peace out there

  • amazing musicianship on this track.. great guitar work.. SV is other worldly as usual!

  • love Suzanne...

  • wery good!!

    wery good peformance!!

    wey good girl!!

  • This is a serious song and can be interpreted in many different ways. I've always loved Suzanne Vega. I love her smooth clear voice and her songwriting. She takes me back to my youth.

  • wooh she has no expression on her face ... or shes fearless but awesome song :)

  • Very clever video.

  • Haunting voice. What about "Marlena on the Wall" video?

    Peace

  • I have a video where Vega is performing "Marlene on the Wall". Check out my channel. :)

  • well thanks for bashing the fuck out of her! but obviously some people like her...she is famous and rich you know!

  • you sure have a lot of time to talk shit. how bout finding something you like and then complimenting it. nah, that's not enough attention for yourself... durrrr.

  • thanks suzanne, no bull, just great music!

  • THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING

  • I love this video love suzanne

  • A very poetic song about that eery, familiar feeling we sometimes get when we come face to face with our loneliness and isolation from the world. Excellent lyrics.

  • To each their own. I think Suzanne looks fantastic in short hair.

  • She should have grown her hair...looks like a dude. Anyway, the song is great.

  • Actually, short hair was a popular style for women starting in the late 80's right through most of the 90's. It's not that popular a style today.

  • i love her <3

  • i'm in love with this song :D

  • I love this song. There's just one thing I don't get. I've been racking my brains and I just can't figure out what she's singing about.

  • Go on the channel of LyricWatch. He has lyricized this song. When you read along with the song you'll understand it.

  • This song has one of the greatest guitar riffs I've ever heard. I bet this woman made a deal with a higher power and for that she had to cut her hair off.

  • Anton, you lucky sob.

  • so 80's

  • yes. Very 80's alternative. I love it.

  • Awesome song!!! Love Suzanne Vega.

  • Per Wikipedia: Suzanne Vega, vocals, acoustic guitar; Michael Viscaglia, bass, synthesizer on 11; Anton Sanko, synthesizers, classical guitar on 5; Marc Shulman, electric guitars; Stephen Ferrera, drums, percussion.

  • TOO MANY MEMORIES TO LIST

  • One of my favorite songs from her. Also of my all time favorites. Dunno how she does that but she does that well.

  • this chick's got lots of cool songs, including this 1

  • You're right, this album is perfect for a road trip. The late eighties, driving from Ohio to Michigan in my Mustang. Cranked up on the open quiet road. It's great to get an album where every song is superb!

  • this song is realy dangerous for road trips , you can feel sleep very easily as it sounds to me as a lullaby

  • My favorite Vega song. Beautful, mysterious woman.

  • This woman needs to be given a new recognition.

  • This is my favourite Suzanne's song. Perfect.

  • I agree about the whole album. It is a musical journey. Fantastic. Must have music for long road trips.
