  • At 2:59 you can see Secretariat make the move to the outside and ine the next 1 1/2 furlongs he goes from the very back to neck and neck. It's amazing. You almost wonder what is wrong with the other horses because they seem to be standing still.

  • the move by secretariat before the clubhouse turn is the greatest move ever by a race horse. beyond belief really. then just past the 1/16 pole in the stretch, watch how the jockey turcotte pumps him with his arms. see how the horse responds to that. just pure beauty.

  • I wish I could have been alive to see Secretariat race. What a wonderful animal, athlete!!!

  • @musicology1999 Secretariat won the Preakness on my 12th birthday. I was truly blessed to see him win the Triple Crown in 1973. He was AWESOME!

  • The speed of Secretariat is just Unbelievable. Seeing him pull all the way from the back is just like he knew it was time to step on it. Amazing!

  • Sham was one in a 100 thousand, but Secretariat was one in a million.

  • Best Race and Worst Jacket ever.

  • greatest race horse everlived

  • it seems like secretariat always give the other horses a free run but when he decided to run fast boom there he is outrunning his competitors

  • unbelievable

  • poor sham-he was a hellava horse-but secretariet was a monster horse. nothing sham could do. he ran with secretariet in every race they ran but big red was just too special!!

  • I agree, this was his greatest race. At the first call, Secretariat is in last, but as soon as "last" is said, he turns on the afterburners and comes around the field in about five seconds. He ran by them like they were standing still. Can't imagine how the other jockeys felt seeing him fly by.

  • "But here comes Secretariat! He's moving fast and he's going to the outside, he's going for the lead- and it's right now that he's looking for it." - Probably one of the top sports calls in all sports history. The jump from Secretariat (from dead last) is so impressive that the camera can't even pick it up b/c he was so far behind.

  • @oudsemaj cf1970 has an alternative video here that has camera on him as Turcotte just turns his wrist, pulls on right rein just meaning to take him to outside bec he felt horses were slowing a little. But Secretariat took off "like a flushed deer" as Bill Nack put in his fantastic biography. you ought to get copy and read descriptions of these 3 races, incredible, tension filled. The Belmont is 8 pages long ! description of Sham going into distress and Pincay not pushing him is painful.

  • @oudsemaj There are a couple of clips where you can see him pulling on the bit and jumping. I can't tell you which ones right this minute. Just Check some of the other Preakness clips. I was looking for one that showed him and found it so I know it's on youtube somewhere. :)

  • i saw the movie too. i love big red and mrs. tweedy

  • I saw the movie Big Red was the greatest

  • Bold Ruler speed. Princequello stamina. Amazing.

  • This is my horses great grandpa!!!!! ((:

  • I agree that the Preakness is almost more impressive than the Belmont, and like Belmont, not a single whip throughout the entire race .. Secretariat decided that race ... if you look carefully, Secretariat seems stuck in traffic and frustrated so Ron lets him fall back and then gently leads him to the outside which Secretariat decides it was permission to take off. Ron never corrects and the rest is history.

  • Sucks to be Sham...

  • To me this race is more mind boggling than the Belmont. Like a V12 passing a few 4 and 6 cylinders.

  • It's really funny these times. that jockey on Secretariat never used the crop on that horse and those people are trying their hardest to push their horses. He makes it look so effortless

  • I<3Secretariat!!!!

  • Still makes me made that the timer didn't get his correct time.

  • @BigRedTC73 After all these years it's a shame that they don't correct the time, he deserved and broke the record that day. The fans trampled the electronic timing cable walking across the track, but wht an effort by Big Red, incredible acceleration.

  • @mstrunn I did read that the Maryland Racing Commission finally gave him his 1:53 2/5 in 1999 on 10th anniversary of his.... leaving us.

  • At 2:14, I love how Big Red looks directly at the camera after he's put in the gate. It's like he's telling us, "Don't worry, I've got a handle on this one!" What an awesome horse he was!!

  • @dandydon1961 hey... I know.... I've always had the same reaction... just a big kid, laid back, turns and looks around... checkin' it all out. Just want to hug him !

  • "And here comes Secretariat, He's moving fast, and he's going to the outside, he's going for the lead, and it's right now he's looking for it.!"

Love this part, when he finally notices Secretariat moving up! Laugh every time!

Love to watch this horse run. Reminds me of the "Little Train That Could",

"I think I can, I think I can, I think I can"! Like it takes time to get that big body going and get up to speed!

    And then it's "Adios Amigos"!

  • Totally sick early move.

  • @whitethronebooks what do you mean... "totally sick" early move?? meaning unbelievable like bad means good??

  • @bon1042 Something like that. :) Sick is, like, awesome! (I don't really get the expression, either.)

  • @bon1042 Yes, exactly. :)

  • This race give me chills!

  • Poor Sham would probably win the Triple crown in almost any other year. He was a great horse but came along in the wrong year. He probably ran the second fastest time ever at the Kentucky Derby at the time but still lost. As it is his time is still probably the third fastest ever.

  • @dsfddsgh I feel the exact same way :(

  • OMG, in all my years of watch horse racing I have never seen a horse move like that...Its like Big Red was like get out of my way you poor suckers and watch my rear end for the rest of the race.

  • My family was in the race horse business and I remember us watching this race at home. I was nine years old. When Secretariat made his big last to first move coming out of the first turn, my father exclaimed in disgust that the rider was costing Secretariat the race. "What does he think he's riding, a superhorse, he asked?" Once Secretariat put Sham away, my mom answered him. "I guess he is a super horse."

  • @machismo64 Great story !!! :) :) in the stands Lucien Laurin said in frustration of Turcotte.... "He blew it !!" When Secretariat made the move.... Turcotte just did that "like a man adjusting a cuff and then pulled on the right rein..." as Nack described it. I don't Lucien really knew quite what he had in this amazing creature.

  • @bon1042 Turcotte said Secretariat made that move completely on his own. He even tried to slow him down . Turcotte, as he's said before, was just there for the ride.

  • @machismo64 by the way.... what was your Dad's reaction as race progressed... and what did he say at the finish??

  • I love watching this..thanks for showing and posting!!! =)

  • Thank you a million times over for posting this original CBS footage. It's truly a goldmine.

  • Woody Broun wore some pretty wild patchwork sports jackets during these Triple Crown races.

  • Much, much better quality video. Most of the videos are of poorer quality, and sometimes you cant tell what's going on.

  • The $2 Tri 3-1-4 paid $5.20 in this 6 horse field.

Just kidding - there was no Tri, but that's what it would have paid.

What a run on the clubhouse turn-he moves up 4 wide and blows by them all.

I do remember watching this live, but it looks just as good now.

Such a shame they mis-timed the race.

  • CBS predicted the trifecta AGAIN !!!!

  • wonderful video with everything!!! thanks for adding this. Brilliant!

  • So fabulous! Sham did an awfully good job, too.

I didn't ever hear about Secretariat's little kerfluffle with the blanket of roses after the derby. Silly trainer forgot to practice that with him ahead of time. :D
