Hey.. I'm 19 and i'm having my prom in about 3 weeks.. just bought a suit in a hurry.. the suits fits well, except the sleeves... they're too long .. the problem is that there are 3 buttons there... may it be shortened ? I looks like it belongs to my father... I've contacted 3 tailors in town .. hope they respond my e-mail tomorrow ... i'm stressed about it.. so.. can it be done ?
Hi Aaron, Thanks for the videos. Very informative. Been thinking to buy a sport coat - my first!. Can you tell me what is the best coat to match with jeans and shirt on the inside - dont like the formal look. Am asking in terms of the type of cloth (cotton, wool, corduroy, etc) Some coats are double-lined and also with pads on the shoulders. Is it good to match these with jeans too? How about color or design? Would like a coat that's all-year round. Whats your suggestion regarding this?
I have a question. I bought a nice Hugo Boss suit from Ebay. The jacket measures out perfectly, but the pants are too big (I'm a 32 and the pants are 35) Could these be altered to my size or did I just waste my money?
In fact its very common to have one harm longer then the other , 75% of men have a difference in arm length , and also a hip slightly lower on one side , so when you have your bottom done you should ask that they measure both legs at all times.
I'm a bit surprised he would not know this fact , so his credibility is at risk ,lol.
@notube2007 Did your parents have any children that weren't retarded and that knew a n article of clothing that bunches up is obviously too fucking big.
It just means you need to have the Taylor do a passover on the garment , ,its completely normal , I'd venture to say that unless your having a made to measure suit made you will need a passover 90% of the time ,
there is one suit /sport coat body that is a bit better , when you go shopping ask the sales person if they have the Tex body , it as got a bit of give under the arms and chest and and that helps the neck and shoulder line..
Also once you get measured, keep in mind your chest measurements. But use it as a guide--NOT gospel. Treat a suit like a tee-- you may wear a small for one brand or style, but wear a medium or large for another. That being said, if you are having a hard time finding an athletic fit, go a size down in a fuller fit. You will usually find that it hugs your body better, and you will have to alter the pants less since you are working with a smaller suit (since it is matched with a smaller pant.)
I like your advice.. as usual. But I just think this one is missing some things. The most important thing on the fit of a jacket is the shoulder. If the shoulder does not fit properly, attempting to alter the jacket is a waste. The jacket will always look to big or too small- leaving it alone looks like you are wearing your father's suit, and taking the waist in will only leave you with unsightly 'linebacker' shoulder pads. The shoulder should never be altered, and if a tailor offers.. run.
do u have small collar shirts because i tend to buy designer brands and ive seen that the collars are very small. u should try the thin lapels on the suit too. it gives a sharper look. have you tried a video on cologne? maybe you can do something with that.
every time i get a blazer that fits through the waist and chest, my butt always sticks out the back creating a upside down V where the cloth is getting out of my way... my upper body is a 38/39, but my ass require me to get a 42 :/ what can I do about that?
@clarenceandbilly Usually if you buy a 38-39S or Regular suit the pants that come with it are anywhere from a 31-33. A tailor can usually let out the waist and seat, as well as the thigh(to a point,) on the pants. But if the jacket is the problem..
I'm kinda dealing with that problem myself..but not to that extreme. I'm implementing exercise so that my proportions become smaller (running, stair-climbing , biking. Good luck.
It sounds like you and me are actually very close in size, which makes me pay even more attention to what you're saying. I generally get a 40S, but the waist is always too large and makes me look bulky and odd. I generally get things fitted but it seems like even altered they don't get nearly enough. i was thinking maybe I was wrong and that was the style but with your fit test, they are still too big. How can I get the people altering to alter the jackets enough?
@jfknightom Try a 39S or even a 38S. When I get officially measured in a store, I am a 43S, but the 39S works the best. Also, look for athletic cut. This should help and cut down on the alterations.
Hey Aaron, I like the idea you have regarding the pocket square - problem is, most suite jackets seem to have a 'fake' pocket these days. Any idea how to overcome this?
lol, there not fake , there just sowed, some are double stitched so you must use a razor blade or a stitch cuter and open does pockets , don't worry there really are pockets in there .
I agree! Men have extremely limited options to pick up fashion advice like this, partly because of culture. But the need to look dashing is especially important, I think, because it sets someone apart from the rest of the crowd.
Yes! Separates are generally made to be worn as a suite or by themselves. But the one thing you need to know is that if you wear the jacket a few times and want to take it to the dry cleaners, make sure you are bringing th pants at the same time. If you over clean one of the items, they won't match for long. Color and wear will become different.
The measurement does not always accurately reflect the appropriate size. Don't be afraid to tell the sales person that you prefer a more athletic fit if you want a smaller size than what is being recommended. Aaron don't forget about us tall guys. There are 5 sizes I carry at Men's Wearhouse. Extra Short, Short, Regular, Long and Extral Long for 6"4 and above depending on torso length.
Over 1 inch shirt sleeve showing looks like your wearing your dads coat I recommend around 1/3 of an inch showing, 1/2 an inch for tuxedo and now shirt showing for more of a casual coat. Cuffing the fingers is a perfect gauge also the coat should cover you butt completely, if not its too short. Great video as usual.
Thanks so much for making this video. I had been wondering about some of these things and couldn't find good information, but this video clears a lot of it up.
Aaron, have you done a video on shirt sizing? If not you should. I seen to many guys who have shirts with sleeves that are way to long or the get a dress shirt that is way to tight and for the most part it does show that maybe the wives bought the shirt. Or they their self do not know how to buy a dress shirt.
This is exactly the video I needed to see! Thanks, Aaron!
Out of curiosity--about how much alteration can a tailor perform? For example, I have a 36R suit jacket. It really ought to be a 36S (reaches almost to my knuckles) but it was not available in that size. It seems fine otherwise. Would a tailor probably be able to make the sleeves short enough, or is that too drastic?
I've never had anything tailored before. What kind of price should I expect for an alteration like that?
Thanks a lot Aaron. I am 5' 61/2" and often have to have my sport jackets, suit jackets tailored. I love your tip on cupping the jacket with my hands to determine the correct length. Great idea. As always, your videos are very helpful and your tips are always put to good practice. Happy holidays to you and your family. William N.Y.C.
He already did a video of where to buy stuff like this. Basically, you named all the places he did but he also metioned places like Goodwill too for those that need to shop on a budget. You can buy sport coats there that are great quality, all you have to do with them is take them to a tailor to change the buttons and the jacket is good as new.
As far as shopping for suits, sport coats and blazers where do you usually go? I have a bunch of places in mind to get various suits from......Syms. ZARA, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Mens Warehouse, H&M makes some very nice stuff as well, I also like Calvin Klein what are your Preferences and what do you recommend?
Hey Aaron. Could you make a video on shoes. What shoes go well with what looks The do's and don'ts when it comes to shoes. Colors, shapes, materials and all that. Thanks
Thank you for the videos. I am approx 5'6 in height and 32 or 34 w., and always have problems with coats etc...

What about shirt cuff length when wearing Cufflinks? They give you a chance to individualize more with cufflinks.. (which you can custom make)
