What happened to your Dad's 68 GTO? I have a Mayfair Maize 68 Convertible! You don't suppose it's your Dad's? I bought in Texas, but it was made in Michigan, so perhaps it speant it's early years in Michigan. Black top, black interior, and a 4 speed.
HO & Ram Air III engines have approx. 375-380 horse power. The Ram Air IV engine is pure stock form produces 425 horsepower. I own a Dyno and rebuild these engines all the time. Those are true honest numbers.
This engine was first offered in 1967 as the third engine in the GTO and Firebird line (after the 400 2 bbl and the base 400)....It produced 360 BHP, and had the cast iron headers. The camshaft was the HO cam with 288/301 duration. It was the top of the line engine until the 400 Ram Air was introduced later in the year. This engine was offered as an option in 1967 thru 1970.
Anyhow, I ran out of room, We widely accepted as 360 Horse the HO / RA-III We being the people who hot rodded and drove them, I had a 68 with a 389, badged as so, but this may have been rebadged, I hated the 389 anyhow , Since I dont have my tech books from 1980, I guess your smart comment shall go unchecked, good for you !!
You're mistaken about something, but I can't put a finger on it because you're coming from so many wrong directions. Most GTOs had the standard 400/350 engine.
The Ram Air III was the base engine in the Judge series of the GTO in 1969 and 1970. It also was the base engine in the Trans Am Firebird of 1969 and 1970. It basically was a Ram Air I with Square Port heads. It utilized the 301/313 duration camshaft of the Ram Air series and produced 360bhp like the HO...but had a slightly longer duration and overlap.
It's not even that car's engine making the noise. If you see closely the when he 'revs' it, the engine doesn't even move one bit. Also, the alternator is no spinning. For that... 2 stars.
keep that car. i had a black '68 hardtop with the base 350 hp 400=bone stock. you have a special car that is worh much more that mine was. i love the colors of your car and i think some elbow grease with rubbing compound to remove the oxidation then a good healthy wax..with an electric buffer that should bring out the paint.
you have a bitchin' car that i'd love to own. never sell it.
