Octopuses (or octopi?) are really clever when it comes to escaping or getting out of a tank or aquarium. This is one octopus you don't want to be saying, "where did it go?"
If this thing bites you, your body will paralyse while you are in awful pain, and can hear all that is going on around you. You can't even scream while you lay there and then (not too slowly) die.
People from outside Australia here on holiday, keep away from them and rock pools they're living in.
While that is a beautiful octopus, keeping one of the most venomous animals on earth that is also one of the smartest as a household pet is simply not a good idea.
Sometimes i really hate living is Aus, fuck these things seriously, these sting you, you are DEAD, there is no hope. You dont want the death these things can give, its a painful death indeed, shuts down your entire body.
@Ky1es The blue-ringed octopus is actually rather docile; they only bite if provoked. Also, there have been only three fatalities linked to these things; as long as proper medical care is administered, a victim has a good prospect of survival. If you can provide artificial respiration through any means, the body will eventually metabolize the toxins. Around a day later the person will be in the clear.
How is epipen going to help you? There is NO known antidote for blue ringed octopus venom. Plus if it bit you while you were sleeping you would never know it since the bite feels like a mosquito bite. The fact that it can squeeze through anything the size of it's beak proves my point. Sone animals were never meant to live in captivity and this is one if there ever was one unless you are a Bond villain.
You are stupid and/or asking for it if you get one of these as a pet. They can escape VERY EASILY from any aquarium you put it in. They will escape and bite you and you will be dead long before you even realize it.
@kingofallwhites Learn before you post, you must first octoproof a tank so it doesnt get out, they can fit through any hole depending on the size of their beak, also you must posses an Epipen. Even then if the Octopode does escape the chances of it finding the owner is very slim.
yeah man thats sweet, he's either very social or real pissed. odd that its expressing colours like that socially. feeding time maybe? haha anyway good job man
oh man, we have those everywhere here in Australia. it makes exploring the rock pool way less fun :( you're GONE if they get you (like pretty much everything else here.... :S)
(LOL. Tried looking for that story on Google, but couldn't see any.) Your story reminds me of an American cousin of mine, a professed animal lover. She had a habit of cooing and immediately touching any animal that looked pretty and cute to her -- like it was a poodle or something -- even when she was wading in a shallow Philippine coral reef. I very nearly had to slap her hand away: "You do NOT touch a friggin' cone shell...especially if it looks like a snakeskin bag!"
Dude, if you were mad at your friend or gf you could say "Hey baby i need to run some erins and get food for my baby octopus its harmless" BAM prob solved.
If you live in Australia you can get them, no where else, theres is specialised Aquarium shops all around aus and pet stores that can order exotics in for you no problem, and there is no law saying you cannot keep this type of pet, but remeber its like the 3rd most deadliest animal in the world, and you cannot handle it, and they only live a year. cost around 80 bucks and you can buy them from aquariums r us at manly sydney australia.

3minutes and its nightynite for good unless your chest cavity is immediatly cracked open and your heart is massaged then and only then do you have a 50% chance of life. I know this b/c I own one...I dont pet him
Actually their poison will just lock up your respiratory system. If you go to the hospital and get artificially respirated before your throat and such gets locked up, you have a good chance of living. Almost all people who live the first 24 hours make a full recovery.
I thought the blue rings only appear once it has released it's venom. Am i mistaken, or was this one doing so in some way? Perhaps seeing the filmer on the other side was frightening to it. Beautiful and magnicent creature, but i wouldn't feel ready at all to touch one!
according to what I know it becomes bright yellow with blue rings when it is provoked, e.g. becomes angry. I suppose somehow they challenged him haha.
The Blue-ringed octopus produces a potent venom, comparable to the venom produced by the two most deadliest spiders; Sydney funnel-web spider, and the Brazilian Wandering spider.
Essentially you're playing Russian roulette with your life if you keep the Blue-ringed octopus as a pet.
What's the matter with idiots seeking deadly animals such as this beautiful sea creature? Be a damn shame if your child enjoyed the pretty blue and decided to touch -it happens, it's the only way stupid people learn.
Ah, this is in Denmark. That makes sense. I knew it wasn't America, because they don't tend to like us to keep shit that can kill you as pets; we're too likely to do something stupid. LOL!
From what I understand, the venom of the blue-ringed octopus shuts down the respiratory system, meaning your lungs stop operating. But if you can get someone to do rescue breathing until the venom wears out, you can survive.
ooo! that octopus is so cute! dangerous but cute!it's blue so its mad, the symptoms of the blur ring is really scary and unoticable apparently! when it bites you, you actually don't feel it biting you! then your body starts to get numb within 45 seconds and then after about 1-1 and a half minuetes yur completely paralyzed and unable to move. Your die within 3-4 minuets. Sorry if there is any wrong info!

Beautiful creatures. But like in much of the animal kingdom, bright coloration means "leave me the fuck alone."
Predators know it.
Unfortunately you have dumb ass humans walking up and saying "Hey! Look What I found!"
Then they are paralyzed and dead, unless there is rescue breathing really close.
