There IS a strong Steely Dan influence here, I hadn't been so aware of it before, and what an excellent outro by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. A really good track from a strong album.

Just helping out. Some guy just had "minute by Minute" taken off his channel. I don't want the same thing to happen to this song.
After hearing this, I bought a guitar. An Ibanez Blazer BL 450. The Washburn wouldn't sit on your knee, the Fender was a disgrace, the Gibson neck was awful. The Blazer just sat on me knee and said "go on then!" I Like lots of guitarists but Jeff Baxter is so MUSICAL. The technique, of course, is great but the likes of Al di Meola with his never ending, unmusical "widdly, widdly" speed fetish gets on my proverbials. Yes. God bless Jeff Baxter!
@SuperAngryvoter Just downloaded the song when searching because I like it, it strikes me as evangelical and gospel. It sounds like he's coming from the POV of heaven. I didn't know that it was 2 separate Jeff Baxters at all.
@biozamadotcom - it's the core of Mike McDonald and his songwriting.... he is deeply spiritual and a genuine guy. He was influenced by Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye who were the first (mainstream after Ray Charles) to wrap protest songs up in silk and lace. Very clever. Most of Mike's songs are actually prayers set to pop music - all through his career and albums. Ya Mo Be There, Blink of an Eye, All I Need (is hope), Peace, I'll Be Your Angel... it's all there if you look and see the light.
This is my all time clean lead solo on the guitar.........it is incredibly difficult to play let alone add feeling too............wonderul Mr. Baxter............just wonderful.
I just read a Guitar Player interview from 1980 where Jeff Baxter says of his solo on this cut: "the solo on "How Do The Fools Survive" on the Doobie Brothers' Minute By Minute surprised me because that was a one-take job, where I just smoked a joint and was alone by myself with an engineer working in another room. It was one of those lean-back-and-play things. "
@therealrandcamp Outrageous. How many acts could do that now? Why don't I hear any more guitarists that make me want to get my guitars out of their case? I'm a pro musician and when I ask guitarists if they've heard of Jeff Baxter, they think I have mis-pronounced "Jeff Beck" .... who is good but ... Baxter is my man I'm afraid. Having said that, I think Chris Rea's guitar playing is hugely underrated because, again, of it's musicality.
@ontariodoobfan - yep I agree - when the Skunk brought Mike McD to the Doobs they were both very young - Mike about 22 and it was the real Golden period for me, despite Tommy's absence (nothing against the man at all). These too had been influenced heavily by the Dan and that is pure grain in music terms, single malt if you will. Mixed this in with the Doobs energy and rock and Mikes gospel blues / soul and it was dynamite... actually only lasted 4 years...... that is the great shame.

@biozamadotcom Well said! I've often thought the same thing. It's as if God himself is pondering the fate of mankind.

Also, I enjoyed Baxter's collaboration with Steely Dan. Steely Dan and the Doobies are prolly about as good as music as we are going to get.
