I dont know much about Serenity or Firefly, I just saw the movie some days before. But I find it so sad that they took advantage of such a great girl like River only to make some excperiments. I mean, she seems cute and very likeable before.. But what they're trying to do? make her insane?

Anyway, I didnt know that Summer was such a nice actress, but especially about 6:35 she did a great job..

Wow. That was crazy creepy, and brings a much darker feel to River Tam's character that you just don't get in the series or even in the movie. You never quite feel in the series that her sanity has slipped far enough for her to truely hurt someone without provocation. But by the last seen in the Sessions you can see that she planned to kill him, knew she was going to do it, and did it.

Summer Glau did a great job with these short scenes. Kudo's to Josh for being in them.

The point is that you see her when she's broken, and then you juxtapose that with her as a normal albeit very clever girl, and then you see the progression to the shocking moment that is played first. I think it's so disturbing, and really shows why you should be invested in River. Joss Whedon is the master.

As others have said, the ordering is intentional. Starting later in time and then flashing back to explain how a situation came to be is a common film tactic. For a good example of this, watch the western 'Maverick', which begins with the titular character about to be hanged.
